Dieter F. Uchtdorf, at the time Second Counsellor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, gave a talk in October 2011 about the problems of fear-based motivation and manipulation. The question that arises is to what degree this talk was self aware of fear-based teachings found within the LDS church.

When I told my parents I no longer believed in the leaders and claims of the church, the first thing my mom asked was "are you not afraid?". I'll never forget that. I can still remember the fear in her eyes when she asked me the question. Religion is based on fear. If you want true piece of mind you should seek spirituality, not religion.

It isn’t fear of God, the Saviour or His church. It’s lost opportunities and blessings and the limited progression when we turn from that which lifts and improves and blesses us. We want to be with our loved ones forever.

I grew up in a fear based religion. Baptist church. One thing I love about the LDs church is that it teaches just the opposite. That we will not fear if we are following our Savior. But will Satan instill fear. Of course. Fear creates hate his ultimate power. Your mother loves you and fears for you. Those that remain asleep our Savior himself warned that if you remain asleep and do not watch you will be cut off. Forever no. But it’s not a fun ride to make wrong choices and have to pay the consequences for them. Life is already hard enough. You are part of a prophecy in the Bible. Maybe look for that ask father. Years before I consciously had any issues with the church, I started feeling like the church was holding my family hostage and I had to do what it wanted or I would lose them. In the middle of my serious postpartum anxiety, this felt really wrong and made the mama bear in me start to fight back. I could explain away with any other questions i had with the church, but you don't mess with my kids. It was really the beginning of the end for me.

You've made a very important video. It illustrates that Mormonism is not your run of the mill religion. It's a high demand controlling fear inducing totalist religion. All religions have magical stories, but not all use them to bind their members emotionally, behaviorally, and intellectually. This is why Mormonism is in a different category than say presbyterianism. It's a crucial distinction.

Nemo this is one of the best videos you've made. Great compilation of clips and documents that is tied up nicely at the end. Church leaders instill FOMO (fear of missing out) into every aspect such as taking the sacrament, temple recommend eligibility, being sealed for eternity, blessings of healing, remission of sins, and many others if you do not live up to the standards they set. The BoM is so clear in that those who keep the commandments will 'prosper in the land' and those who don't will be destroyed. Hence when things go wrong in life it makes you think you still aren't doing enough and you become scrupulous in unhealthy ways.

People who live the gospel, repent, and receive a remission of sins don't feel guilt or shame and have peace of conscience. (Mosiah 4:2-3) And they had viewed themselves in their own carnal state, even less than the dust of the earth. And they all cried aloud with one voice, saying: O have mercy, and apply the atoning blood of Christ that we may receive forgiveness of our sins, and our hearts may be purified; for we believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who created heaven and earth, and all things; who shall come down among the children of men. 3 And it came to pass that after they had spoken these words the Spirit of the Lord came upon them, and they were filled with joy, having received a remission of their sins, and having peace of conscience, because of the exceeding faith which they had in Jesus Christ who should come, according to the words which king Benjamin had spoken unto them.

Great video. I think fear in motivation has its place (ie. Staying away from drugs, wearing your seatbelt, keeping good friends, saving for a rainy day, etc.) but the way the LDS leaders employ it is straight up manipulative as the objects of fear they describe are not tangible in the here and now - and may never be. That teaches people to rely on them because they’re the only ones who can see the dangers (“see around corners” as Nelson’s wife said).

ooh, you must have been endowed after the penalties were removed in about 1990. They were scarier than Satan! When you make the sign with the thumb extended, it represents a knife. That's when you would have motioned to slit your throat and said, "Should we do so, we agree that our throats be slit from ear to ear ad our tongues torn out by the roots." The penalty for the second token was "Should we do so, we agree to have our breasts cut open and our hearts and vitals torn out from our bodies and given to the birds of the air and beasts of the field." The third penalty was when you hold the left hand in front of you in cupping shape (to catch your bowels) and the right hand, palm down, thumb extended, would have made a slicing motion across your stomach while repeating, "Should we do so, we agree that our bodies be cut asunder in the midst and all our bowels gushed out." It's so embarrassing that I ever believed even a word of this!

I agree with you, Nemo. Nancy Rigdon in an interview with E. L. Kelley denied those rumors about Joseph Smith’s alleged letter to her. When he said " when you remove the savior's name from the Lord's church, it's a great victory for Satan" and if you're looking the book Mormon doctrine Bruce McConkie said " the name of Christ has always been in the name of the church" well they're lying to you because Joseph Smith and his counselors voted to name the church " the church of the latter day saints" which it remained the name of the church for 4 years until they changed it again back to the current name. I believe that was in 1838. So he preaches false history and Bruce McConkie lies about the name of the church

Another Excellent summary of how the church coerces and controls it's members every move, thought and action! Thank you Nemo - Your meticulous research and presentations are off the charts and when I get out of my financial slump, you are one of the first people I will donate to! :-) -- -- I remember when I was in "Mutual" back in the 70's, that one of the scriptures we recited was "for god hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of love, and of power, and of a sound mind." (Well, God must be a psycho or bi polar because one minutes says that and the next threatens to torch someone for not obeying every tiny little whim of his, and keeps jumping back and forth on what the rules are. I'm sooo glad I severed all connection from that "Enlil Jehovah god dork! He is one of the Sumerian godlets that is a power hungry, self absorbed, Ass Soul! Watch Stargate SG-1. They pretty much nailed how the universe works and how the "System Lords" rule the universe.

Excellent deconstruction! The whole point for the need of a Savior, is that the LAW is impossible to keep 100%. Jesus said He fulfilled the law, and He IS the LAW. Fear is lawlessness, and anyone who promotes LAWS (read ordinances here) is promoting LAWLESSNESS. Who is the LAWLESS ONE? In 2nd Thessalonians it refers to the anti-christ. When the Sadduccees and Pharisees missed the first coming of the Messiah, it was because they practiced the LAW. The second coming of the Messiah can also be missed if your focus is not on HIM, but instead on the world. Amazing video Nemo!

Bednar is the king of scare tactics. “If some night, you don't want to go to sleep, read the scriptures and learn what happens to covenant breakers. I guarantee you, you will not go to sleep.” Gotta love President Kimball's story of the couple who opted for a civil wedding instead of a temple sealing, and died in a car wreck on their wedding night. “They may have been good young people; I don't know. But they will be angels in heaven if they are. They will not be gods and goddesses and priests and priestesses because they did not fulfill the commandments and do the things that were required at their hands.” I guess it doesn't matter if they would have been sealed a year later had they been permitted to tarry...

If you watch the whole clip of D. Bednar and the little boy, his eyes are shining and happy at the beginning and at some point during and at the end, the young boy looks to be fighting back actual tears and looks completely miserable. I was horrified when I saw that clip. I have wondered if that was his mother they showed in the audience at the beginning and how she felt watching that? I know it would have upset me tremendously. Sadly, when my children were that age, I would have sat there and made myself see the whole thing as right, good and true. Now, I would have taken him away at the beginning of the over handling. I honestly don’t believe members are taught to think and act for themselves. In that culture, we aren’t even taught emotional intelligence. We shove it down if it isn’t acceptable…. Until we can’t anymore. The way to the Kingdom of God is within, as Jesus stated in Luke 17:21. Going within was called the key of knowledge by Christ also. Anyone who isn’t telling you that, isn’t teaching Christ’s gospel. The way to God is not outside you. Nor can it be seen, it’s going within and finding it there. I hope we all find this narrow path, and remember who we are, who we All are. 💞✨

Too bad he is not here now, I would love to confront him about his grandfather (Heber C. Kimball), who was about as crude and lecherous as they come. Fortunately for SWK, he passed away before the internet revealed information that had been suppressed and now is out in the open. Who shamed HCK? It is impossible for any youth or even adult member of the church to be more wicked in sexual sins than the early general polygamists.
