Do Muslims celebrate Halloween?

Halloween is not an Islamic festival, which is why many Muslims do not usually celebrate on the 31st October. Many of the practices of Halloween have nothing to do with worshiping Allah, God, and some can cause distress for others.
#Halloween #Muslims #Islam
Nevertheless, there are many people who wish to join in with others and see it as harmless fun. In Islam, the deceased are honoured in other ways, as was the practice of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), which we learn through hadith.

I respect the hard work done to make this video available as well as the animation which is very good. Personally, I think Halloween is totally fine. Yes, we do not make it part of the religion but it’s fine if one does it not wanting to seek to harm others but to have fun. Now, equating this celebration to the sin of association seems kind of misleading to me because it is not at all similar to one who does it by worshipping something other than God. Most people who celebrate Halloween don’t believe in those things anyway. With that being said, Salam (Peace) to you and thanks for the hard effort.

Thank you for your comment. We appreciate your respectful dialogue and opinion, especially as it is so important for our youth to see that one can give their opinion in a polite, constructive way. Of course everyone has their own beliefs and interpretations. The video here mentions shirk or association within a specific context. Shirk in itself is quite a complex subject, more than worshipping something beside God in the traditional sense of praying. Halloween has of course changed over time and has taken on new meanings and forms. This video aimed at giving some background and why many Muslims choose to avoid it. We have not said what a person should or should not do, as individuals and parents are free to make their own choices. Again, thank you for your comment. Salam, Peace be with you.

Thank you. My daughter is feeling sad I won’t let her go on the Halloween field trip at school, but she’s among Christians, Muslims, etc who don’t go, so hopefully this video and their company will help her feel better.

This is a very orthodox and conservative perspective on Islam. Intentions in Islam are very important and though it has religious roots it is widely considered as a secular holiday detached from any religious meaning today. I respect your belief and hope you respect mine(as healthy academic discourse is a positive thing) . But simplifying Islam to a bunch of arbitrary rules is not what Prophet Muhammad would preach he urged his followers to think and if you look at the Quran it urges this as well.

I think this interpretation is influenced by austere Saudi Wahhabism. They focus strongly and narrowly on shirk. Thanks to their oil wealth they propagate their ideas widely.

Can you go trick or treating if your intentions are just to get candy? Or could you perhaps dress up as costumes like idk a pizza or a tree or maybe a item that doesn't resemble animals or characters?

Salam. Thank you for your question. There are a few ahadith mentioning this from the Book of Muslim. Hazrat Aisha ra has narrated how the Holy Prophet saw would visit the cemetery. He also would recite a prayer “Peace be on you dwellers of this home of the faithful/believers”. Tirmidhi also records this prayer “Peace be on you dwellers of the graves” which implies that he did go there. There are other examples too of how he encouraged his followers to visit the cemetery. Hope this helps
