In my specific circumstances, residing in southern Alabama in the US, the closest formed team is 2 hours away from me at best. How would you recommend someone in my position get started? Believe me, I'd love to go to work with a team immediately, but it's just not feasible. It'd be easier to try and start my own group with a few newcomers, unfortunately, but even then, I'd have to learn the sport prior to doing so. How should I best go about that?

Set some time to make the trip out to the teams you mentioned, get to know them and pick their brains. Many of our team members drive 1.5+ hours each way to get to practice. Its not uncommon as the sport is still so new. And get your soft kit together first and practice with your friends

Bugurt is not a sport. Its when 1000 or so people fight in old castles or fields. Americans cant even copy things properly.
