Clones make up around 40% of my collection and they really helped reduced my spending on this hobby. As you said, some of these houses have gone crazy with these prices especially in this economy which opened a big entry gate for clone houses to target an audience that is passionate about fragrances but cant afford them. Its also important to mention how the demography of the audience has changed as you can literally find kids under the age of 12 with full blown collections and a good knowledge about perfumery but again cant always afford a $200+ fragnance. And the best thing is that 99% of people cant tell apart clones from the actual frag.

@@ChadSecrets Some of us live in areas of the country that simply do not have anyplace to go to test a niche fragrance. Finding decants of niche clones is a futile endeavour as well. Sometimes, the only choice available, is the research and blind buy route. I've had hits and misses with this strategy. Amber and leather was horrendous. Exclusif Tabac is magical. It'll always be hit and miss for people in situations like mine.

One's inability to afford original designer fragrances isn't the only reason for buying clones. There is justification to do so on principle alone. Consider that the designer houses start with inflated prices, and then, as their fragrances grow in popularity and hype, they reformulate and dilute them, or play the scarcity game, while simultaneously raising prices in response to increased demand, which further gouges consumers and increases profits. And while some folks may dispute these allegations of price gouging, what cannot be disputed is that inferior or bastardized reformulations occur with disturbing frequency, and they all occur without transparency, which is nothing less than bait-and-switch. So why should consumers engage in loyalty that is not reciprocated? As for the quality of the clones themselves, in my experience, two of the primary differences between clones and originals are 1) the inferior quality of clone top notes, and 2) how clones smell when you put your nose right on skin. But the people smelling your fragrance don't notice or care about those weaknesses, so we needn't care about them either - especially when we recognize that we're paying a mere fraction of the designer price. What's more, there are a LOT of clones that will get you into the ballpark of the originals, and some may even surpass them, depending on individual preferences, or on how badly the originals were reformulated or watered down.

@@ChadSecrets I think that, by now, most people in the frag community have gotten the message that influencers have a conflict of interest, and that their recommendations should be viewed as jumping-off points for additional research. For example, before I buy a clone, I try to sample the original if it's available (as you advised). After that, I _always_ look at the ratings on fragrantica, basenotes, and parfumo, and read the user reviews on a variety of sites to get a sense of its quality and performance - and that has worked quite well for me. Anyone who _isn't_ doing similar research will probably start doing it after they've been burned by an influencer's recommendation. Either way, the best thing about buying clones, IMO, is that, since they're relatively cheap, a bad purchase won't break the bank.

Another issue I'm starting to see is that alot of the clone craze results in over-buying when you were trying save money in the first place. You see this rationale "well it's only 20-30 bucks" and end up with a bunch of clones that you may like or are ambivalent to but not too much you really love because you never sampled before you bought. Also spending 30 bucks on a bunch of different clones, which add up isn't smart when you could of just smelled something for free in the store or spent only a few bucks on a sample. Personally, I've never experienced a clone that was "better or equal than the original" despite how much these bought infuencers may try to make you feel. Big respect to you and your channel for keeping it real.
@ChadSecrets
@ChadSecrets Ай бұрын
Yup i see that a lot too. Or buying a clone with less performance thats 1/4th of the price only to have to overspray it to get the perfromance of the originals. Price per application ends up being the same as a designer at that point
@moodurr13
@moodurr13 Ай бұрын
As a clone buyer I %110 agree with this. That's par for the course with this hobby, This is why I now only sample before I buy. Clones would provide 33ml or 100ml bottles for the same price it would cost to sample some of the major niche fragrances they are cloning. So this still justified their cost, but then that would cause one to buy far more clone frangrances ultimately spending what they would have spent, if not more, on the actual fragrance they were into. I have done this countless times - I have over 100 niche/designer frangrances and over 200 clones. I am into to fragance, while the points in his video are valid the core essense as to why clones are a viable option is missed. I can start a youtube channel on this and have flirted with the option but I no longer buy fragrances anymore. I may dabble once a year but not enough to be in the know. I disagree about the clone being better than the original part though as that is highly personal preference. Some niche/designer fragrances may die quicker, pass a note quicker you may have wanted to linger etc etc etc I've come accross some real gems in the clone space and also some duds. I do think they are necessary though and should be examined on a case by case basis

Most, if not all clone houses, are better than Zara and Bath And Body Works. And you don't see people giving Zara and BABW a hard time for their clones. Then there are legit houses that make cheapies. Sure snobs turn their noses up at them but they don't deserve any criticism other than being cheap. They still smell good. Some even smell as good as designer and niche. Maybe even better. How about companies like Alexandria, Alt, Dossier, Scentual Obsessions, and others? Are they clone houses, too? Are they bad for what they do? And even designer and niche clone each other for supposed "better" quality. They have even used the same perfumists. Even clone houses have used their perfumists. So what's the big deal? People need to get over it. There is no exclusivity to fragrances. Just snob appeal. And copycats are rife in the industry. Period. Wear what you like and keep other people guessing. Nobody cares. Nor should they. Unless they're snobs. Or, fragheads. Haha. Cheers.

Why do you think no one’s talking about Zara? BECAUSE THEY DON’T PAY INFLUENCERS AND GIVE OUT FREE BOTTLES. The moment they’d start doing it is the exact moment influencers would start to hype up the new Zara fragnance as the second coming of Jesus
@shmoopiebear
@shmoopiebear Ай бұрын
@@NoseofaVizsla Not true. There have been many influencers, who are fragrance enthusiasts first, hyping BABW and Zara. They're not doing it for free stuff. They're doing it for likes, views, and subscribers. Some may not be top shelf and tier influencers. But they're making a living on their side gig hustle. They may even be less biased about their reviews because they are loyal first to their base. And not to companies which may hire or sponsor them. It's all about what motivates and incentivizes people to do social media. It's not always about free stuff. If these "influencers" were called marketers and advertisers, nobody would give them such a hard time. At the end of the day people do things for some kind of payout. It could be altruism but hardly ever is. Everybody likes to think they're the good guy. Till they're not anymore.

i appreciate that you’re making different content like this in the community! these informative topic videos are the reason why you, school of scent and justin copeland are my favorite fragrance influencers to watch. i think the reason why clone fragrances are more justifiable in our eyes than a knock off designer handbag or piece of clothing attire is because it’s all about the enjoyment we get from the fragrance rather than a display of status or fashion. fragrances are about smelling good while designer fashion is about looking like luxury (most of the time at least) i recently picked up lattafa al nashama caprice and i’m definitely very impressed with it. i used to have la nuit de lhomme but i wasn’t a huge fan of the almost abrasive cardamom in it. really liking how this take on the bleu electrique dna smoothens it up while retaining soft spiciness from the cardamom

So do people like the painting of the Mona Lisa because they like the image and art or the fact that it is famous and priceless? because a photograph of the original would be the same exact image, and that is what is going on here. Are you buying a fragrance because it smells good or because it is expensive? it really boils down to that, i have maybe 50 fragrances non smell like one another and they are all very good smelling, so why does a fragrance have to smell 100% like an original to smell good, when none of the other fragrances you have smell like that one. people create these rules in their mind to justify what they like and don't like. some want to believe that real oils are only the domain of expensive niche houses, that is silly, yes >some< natural oils like oud or saffron are very expensive. even some expensive niche houses use synthetics, not so much because they "smell better" but because of consistency between batches availability and longevity. many notes are synthetic across the board, ambergris / Ambroxan, civit and others from animal sources are largely all synthetic. other notes like "water notes", "aquatic notes" etc. are not real notes per se, no one is squeezing oils from the pacific ocean here. these are concepts. Anyway regarding influencers, they are useful to help identify what a particular fragrance is inspired by, but luckily for me, there are distributers near by I can sample "clones" before buying. I try to avoid frags that are too similar to one another, and also performance, DNA, and quality are important. >I do not care how close they are to the original< to me, how good they smell is what is most important. performance is another thing, if it smells good, but last 3-4 hours, it's getting donated. Clone houses quality is at about par with designer frags with most of their recent releases. look at your typical 100 dollar designer fragrance, how much of that 100 dollars goes into the oils? and how much goes into advertising (TV, Magazines, Internet, mall billboards) , agents that push their frags in stores, celebrity endorsements plus the profits needed to pay of shareholders, all that goes into that 100 dollar frag. so when a UAE company sells a perfume for 40 bucks. but has no movie actors, are fancy TV ads, or special billboards in airports or representatives in Macy's pushing their products. they can still put out the same quality. Niche is not niche because it is expensive (although most are) they are niche because they are generally not mass appealing scents. that does not mean they are automatically harder to clone by default.

Awesome video Chad! I appreciate your honest take! I only wore Bvlgari Pour Homme Soir for 15 years before it was discontinued. I got tired of dealing with all of the fakes in the market. It was time to find a new fragrance. I wasted a lot of money on designer fragrances that smelled good in the store, but later found out it wasn't for me for different reasons; Didn't mix well with my skin chemistry, bad performance, caused headaches or my wife didn't like it, etc... So, I turned to KZbin for advice. This is how I found out about clone fragrances. For $20-$30, why not? I quickly found out the top influencers were full of sh*t! All of these clones that they were promoting sucked! I was done with clones. I then came across your Turathi Blue review and decided to give a clone one last shot. Your review was spot on. It's a great fragrance! There are only a handful of fragrance reviewers that I trust, and you're at the top of the list! My only hang-up is that I'm embarrassed to tell someone what I'm wearing when they ask. When wearing a clone, what do you or anyone else tell people that inquire about the fragrance that you're wearing?

I couple of years ago I bought my first clone fragrances and I was so exited because it honestly felt like I owned fragrances that I could not afford before. I kept on buying new clones out of pure curiosity, also hoping to find that cheap hidden gem one day that ticked all the boxes and I could stick with for a while. I wasn't feeling it in my pocket, because I would usually spend around 20 euro's on a clone and I would buy 1 every month. As time passed by my nose developed and I started to get more and more disappointed in the quality of the clones. Some of them just straight up smelled bad and then it became the norm to let them "macerate" first before they became anything decent. I also started comparing the clones side by side with samples of the originals, and realised that although they would smell good on their own, they were nowhere near the OG in terms of quality. Also I lot started to smell bad after the first year. It became very clear influencers were overhyping clones, simply because they would get more views or they were being paid by the clone brands. All in all looking back I spend about 800 euro's on 40 clones that I hardly wear because I just own to much fragrances, and with the experience I have now I would rather spend that money to buy a view holy grail fragrances that would get more wear and give me more enjoyment.

About 40 % is owned by the retailer, about 12% are marketing cost for product placement and 16 % are taxes. Do you really want to pay about 50% of the price for nothing or 5x of the fragrance costs just for wearing a dedicated brand which noone will recognize? Lets be honest. Screw that. I dont have any allegiance to these companies. I just want the scent profile. With that being said, there are some frags that can't be cloned (yet), and or their clones are inferior. In the grand scheme of it all, clones have a place, and im happy they exist. This is how i rationalize it. There are clones for Naxos, so im not committing to a bottle for that. There are no clones for Iommi Monkey special, so I'll commit to a bottle for that. It's case by case basis. I have a bottle of Sauvage Elixir, and i bought my dad a bottle of Asad. It's basically close enough not to even justify buying SE. 😅 Any anti clone logic is flawed once you realize most of us buy dupes all the time at Wal-Mart or Amazon. Great value? Amazon basics? I did GC-MS for flowers volatiles and cannabis terpenes and just wanted to give a lil info most people wouldn't know. GC separates molecules by molecular weight and fragmentation pattern in a carrir gas (usually weight/density dictate this), not necessarily size. A molecule that is sensed in the spectrometer can't be identified with certainty. The graph essentially shows how heavy it is, and you can only see it's peak relative to some standard. In the case of scent volatiles, enantiomers (which are non-super imposeable isomers) are mirror images, so they basically have the same peak in GC-MS unless certain elements are present in a column to address this. This applies to perfume a lot because, for instance, limonene (S) and limonene (R) are enantiomers, but the way they smell is way different. One smells like lemon and one smells like pine. This is due to how they bind to out olfactory receptors. I can see this having interesting implications in cloning fragrances, as they could use a different isomer than the original and make something similar but distintly dofferent. Of course, with a big enough budget and good R&D team, I'm sure these clone companies could replicate scarily accurate interpretation but that's not gonna help their bottom line🤑

I absolutely support you with your reasoning for buying clones. I can't really say that I feel awesome that I bought a masterpiece formula for $30, but at the same time some brands make it insanely hard to buy certain fragrances, some come only in 100ml bottles and I know that I'll use probably only 30 or 50 because I have many. Some just impossible to buy or test - in my country (despite that I live in Europe) it's super hard to get Bvlgari and Louis Vuitton private lines, so I simply bought Anfan and Lataffa clones and I'm ok with that for now

In other cases, I've been looking to try out Santal 33 but if I were to buy a 15ml sized bottle from their website it would cost me £75 which is enough to buy me 3 clones for example 😂😂😂

As per my opinion, clones are only worth it if it's something discontinued, or if the clone is very very close to the OG, or, if the OG is overly expensive. Apart from that, its better to get the OG, simply because of the better psychological factor, and the re-sale value, and also the flex that you can do :P

The lack of transparency with some influencers is a problem and takes a variety of forms, including sneaking in fragrances (they are paid to promote) into their ‘top ten’ lists. There are a few well-known fragrance reviewers who actively promote brands and are transparent about it, but the problem then becomes how can you trust them in the future when they add those fragrances into their ‘best of’ lists. Seems to me you either have to be a fragrance reviewer striving for honesty, OR a salesperson, but not both.

I think considering the current price policy of the original designers, it's ok to buy clones. Maybe the original can reconsider their price policy keeping in mind how much of a client base is lost due to the cheaper alternatives exsisting. My favorite clone so far is Detour Noir and every person that smelled me said I smell expensive. So what's the point to buy Layton?

I've started to collect some good clones since I've been collecting vintages, designers, niche/luxury, and artisinal fragrances, and I've realized after about over 50grand of fragrances and almost two decades collecting them, getting into good clones is actually quite interesting. You really have to do your research because there's really a lot of bad ones out there. Many good clone companies are definitely from the Middle East; Lattafa, Afnan, French Avenue/Fragrance World, and a handful of others. But yeah, to those really serious about fragrance clones, do your research first and listen to Chad. He knows what he's talking about. Like you said, the perfumers work for the oil houses. They are buying the oils directly from the oil houses. Quentin Bisch made Teriaq and Teriaq Intense for Lattafa (and one of the Armaf ones). Therefore, Lattafa is working with Guivadan. I doubt Quentin Bisch would have attended a launch party in Paris for Teriaq Intense if that wasn't the case. All the oil houses also have loads of failed brief attempts sat on their shelves that they sell to anyone. The perfumers themselves aren't treated like artists. They don't receive royalties on sales. However, there are also plenty of influencers that try and claim every clone is born that way.

Great video, packed with useful information, especially about pre-made oils. I keep hearing the term panty dropper, but let’s be real: no one’s falling for you just because you’re wearing Spicebomb Extreme. Compliments happen, but you still need to look presentable. I agree that designer perfumes are worth it, but prices have skyrocketed since the perfume influencer trend began. Clone houses, on the other hand, are improving rapidly. They’re edging closer to 1:1 accuracy and even outperforming originals in longevity. Hopefully, this competition will push designer brands to lower their prices, which have doubled compared to years ago. Take Invictus, for example-€118 for 100 ml? No way. I remember buying Invictus Legend for €50. What changed? Greed. As long as people pay, prices will stay inflated. That’s where clones shine. While they’re not exact replicas yet, they offer a budget-friendly alternative close to what designers used to cost. Decants are a blessing too-I can sample a clone, compare it at stores like Sephora, and buy it if the difference is negligible. For office wear, I stick to affordable options like Supremacy Not Only Intense. No colleague has ever called me out for not wearing the original. They just say I smell good, and that’s all that matters. Designer exclusives like Bleu de Chanel Parfum or Sauvage Elixir? I save those for dates. Funny enough, BDC gets more compliments from guys than girls, so it’s in a weird limbo for me.

It’s true, a lot of these influencers are just getting paid by these clone companies to hype up their fragrances. I just go to Macy’s or Sephora and I actually test out the fragrance. Sometimes if I like the fragrance that much I’ll buy it and do my homework on the clone and have the clone for everyday use so as not to use up the original so quickly. My favorite by far in my collection is Liquid Brun (PDM Althair Clone). I did check out Althair at Bloomingdale’s and I was blown away. Liquid Brun to me is almost identical and the differences are minute. Great video Chad, keep em coming!

In my case, I would only buy a clone for a fragrance that is discontinued by the designer, for example Boss Bottled Intense EDT and EDP. There is absolutely no way to get them anymore, except by paying outrageous prices on eBay. So, turning to clones like Nazih Silver or Pinnace Noir that replicate the scent with with up to 90, 95% accuracy is simply a godsend.

I initially shared your view about clone fragrances. I was always told, "If you buy cheap, you get cheap. " However, the clone fragrances that are coming out today are of top quality. Yes, the price gets your initial attention, but the product quality is what keeps you coming back for more. I also attribute the popularity of clones to the ridiculous price that some brand names charge their fragrances -- yes, LV I'm looking at you! Why on earth would something made of perfume concentrate, alcohol, and/or water sell for $500+ for a 100 ml bottle when it would probably cost them no more than $20 to make?! Of course, folks will gravitate to a superior clone that smells identical, lasts 5x longer, and for a fraction of the cost.

My feelings are, if I like it I like it. I pretty much refuse to pay the high prices of a lot of niche and other expensive name brand fragrances. I love good perfumes, but that's just not worth it to me. Plus, even though I know the ingredients are more expensive and high quality, I still feel that the mark up (and feeling of being scammed) is much higher with those well known expensive and niche fragrances. Just because of their name usually. 🤷‍♀️ So generally I prefer the Arabian versions of perfumes.

Well thats fair and fine to do. I just reccomend people dont blind buy even a clone without seeing if they like the original first. Even a clone can be a waste of money if they dont like it. Some clones are amazing

Why i hate designer fragrances? Because most of them buy patchouli from my country which is number 1 in the world to produce patchouli for cheap price and sell it for $300++
@ChadSecrets
@ChadSecrets Ай бұрын
But patchouli isnt why they charge outrageous prices. Its because of their name attached to the fragrance

@ChadSecrets that's the point "The Name of Their Brands" what's the matter wear it clones? Like only 0.00000000001% ppl know about perfumes or we called fraghead the rest is don't know that you are using a designer fragrances, I don't say that every fragrance clones is good but at least many ppl able to try them, the sad part is if some this clones are get hyped the retail and resellers mark up the price

Good thing my collection is small and I only own fragrance I absolutely love . Unfortunately lots of niche and designer just doesn’t resonates with me and most new fragrances just smell way too similar to ones I already own . I’m sure clones are fine for people that into buying 100’s of perfumes to save money

This was a great informative video. From my perspective as someone who can't really afford some fragrances like Tuxedo by YSL, I feel like clones are good to get you started as a beginner, as it's not going to hurt as much if you end up not really liking a fragrance. To me, personally, I want to start my collection including a few clones, and having the clones of x fragrance motivates me to get the real deal one day. idk if it made sense, I'm pretty bad at explaining things lmao. So far my collection is: Versace Dylan Blue, Lacoste L.12.12 Blanc, just ordered Kayaan Classic from Al Wataniah, and Lattafa Khamrah Qahwa. Again, great video!

You have a good starting collection. If you want clones thats fine! Just make sure you know what they are before getting the clone or you could be setting yourself for disappointment. Thanks for watching@

Wow this really opened my eyes. I honestly just got a tom ford clone this week and didn’t really like it even though everyone online really liked it. Definitely will be smelling the original fragrance before buying a clone or even the real thing.

I have bought clones so I am not hating on them. But I have a very big suspension these houses were just buying and using mass amounts of basically essential oils. This kind of confirmed that. I love how some smell and I know it's cheap cause it's made cheap so I don't ever expect it to live up to the original. But in all fairness if I really wanted to smell or own the original I buy it.

If a clone fragrance has great performance and smell for an affordable price I’m all in. But I’ve blind bought some clones hyped by influencers when I started and they are absolute trash
@systemsoversymptomsvisionw9806

Subscribed! Yup, I got duped by influencers into buying a tonne of clones. Am I upset about that? Hmmm. Well, it sucks to feel lied to, but I guess I allowed it to happen and also, blind buying various clones DID get me passionate about fragrances. When you OWN a fragrance, you can try it out so much more than if you are sampling in a store. And I didn't and still don't really know where to go to get decants of popular or niche fragrances... every time I tried so far they didn't have what I wanted. So anyway, by buying the clones I was able to expand my horizons quite a bit. I now am trying to wear fragrances out that I never woudl have bought if they were full price.. I've starting wearing something like Oud for Glory, for example, which is a BOLD fragrance I otherwise would have never tried... and also Amethyst which is also bold but feminine... which I also would not have tried but for these influencers. And I've been trying tobacco scents and marine scents - things I never had interest in before. So, it has been a journey, I guess. Top faves so far: AAOIO, Khamrah Qahwa, Tobacco Vanille (or a clone), Tafakhar, OFG, Glacier Le Noir (Le Male Le Parfum clone), and Winsome... These clones have ALSO got me interested in OG fragrances.... when the clone runs out, I may buy the OG or at least sample it and buy if I think it's even better...

No right and no wrong about this topic. If designer company sell their perfume with a reasonable price, people will buy them and clone company wont even have a chance to grow big like today. The thing is, clone company nowadays (between 3 to 4years ago) produce quite high quality product with good performance, almost 80% - 90% smell like OG with more than half the price.

When people learn that brands like Firmenich, Symrise AG, IFF, etc. are the one that manufacture the oils, aroma chemicals, fixatives, and everything else not only for the clone houses but also for various other "OG" Designers, they will lose their minds xd.
