It’s cool that Josh has an international audience, but assume viewers are primarily in N America. As such, pretty good advice. In fact, UK & N Europe probably the only places where SG are truly necessary. More annoying for my region, I live in an area dominated by AG pitches. AG stud patterns were widely available on top tier boots 4-5 yrs ago, but the big brands seem to have abandoned them in past couple generations of boots.

@@yoonit78 I live in England but most of my league / cup games are on AG and I prefer it to natural grass 100%. Think it’s down to if the pitch is as wet as it can get in England, it’ll be trashed after 10 mins 😂 FG boots on AG is what I do and I think most players do

@@ClipsOfTheCentury00 ya. Same, live in the Pacific NW in the States. FG that aren’t too aggressive work ok. Mercs or other super aggressive plates are dicey. For adidas SG boots, if you buy their FG screw in studs, they actually do become FG as the studs become the same length as the normal FG ones (i've measured) and they work fine as FG boots even on artificial pitches.

One SG pair is probably good to have if you have pronounced cold or wet seasons like we do. Anti-clogs, esp. are quite useful in muddy grounds. I need to use SG boots for around 12-15 days an year over 4 months of august-Sep (rain) and Dec -Feb (winter-overnight frost moisture) but for those times it’s great to have. Also lasts a few seasons so long as you take care to clean out all the muck regularly. (Avoid leather for this purpose!) There is a higher chance to injure your opponent so probably best avoided by absolutely beginners or if you are playing casually and your mates aren’t wearing shins

Essentially SG for non-professionals are for people who live in very specific locations, like the UK or the Pacific Northwest in the US. Even then, you find a lot of AG fields in the Pacific Northwest, which is baffling to me. Also there are Hard Ground (HG) boots, which are much less common and different from FG. They are typically found in Japan, and I want say Brazil as well. Even though in Brazil they aren’t labeled as HG boots, I think some of the old school stud patterns from Topper and Penalty (two of the major football would fall in better in the hard ground category.

I feel like the FG boots from ~10 years ago were much more versatile. They were far more aggressive than the shallow, pretty useless, options you get today. I wore the Diadora morphos in high school and would generally play without the central stud and had longer studs I would drop in to the 6 key positions when playing in extra wet conditions. While you could use them with just the standard six studs in the SG positions, I found the soleplate wasn't stiff enough to handle it. Interesting concept, but didn't quite live up to expectations.

@BenKickert2 жыл бұрын
Turf is becoming a non-standard term. Technically it is referring to the ultra short (1-2cm) artificial surface, but a lot of folks use the term turf when referring to artificial grass (4-5 cm usually with ground rubber underlaying it). My AG field is relatively old and flattened, so turf shoes (mundial goals for instance) are best. Since I play in the old fat man league, unless the ground is wet, I will even use turf shoes when playing on harder natural grass surfaces. Long story short, FG is gonna work for anything besides actual turf, where you will actually slide around due to lack of traction.
