Changed at the airport and got better rate than these guys. Went to these guys at Eko hotel towards the end of my holiday and got less for my £s. It's annoying to hear this guy say you get less for your money if you're changing less than £20. You don't get that at the airport. Great job from this channel though content wise.

What the guy said about not changing at the airport is so true. Everything within an airport is a ripoff including the exchange rates. But why even take money to change??. Why take the risk?? Remitley, World Remit, Transferwise and others all remove the need to do any of this as long as you have a mobile money account to send to. All done in 5 mins usually. I use XE Money (great app) for finding the daily rates (they even do money transfer) but like the other app you mentioned be aware the rate quoted is the mid-price (the actual rate, this is the rate you would use if exchanging to not make a profit) not the buy or sell rates the money changers use. So its just a guide

Ms. Funke, you are doing an excellent job. The content of your videos is much needed information. Thank you. My question today is on the right amount of tips. I hear also from people that come from abroad trying to juggle the rate of exchange in their mind and to figure out how much to tip in Niara for services. Like a good transporter from the airport to your hotel, or someone who shows you around town etc. Percentage or amount to give that are acceptable and or not insulting. Thank you for your answer.

The 2nd point is herald nonsense, any legal tender paper money doesn't lose its value irrespective of its date of printing, that's Nigerian factor that should be removed. If the bill is not a counterfeit, it should be ok for a exchange.

Yes, Note denominations has always been different. I always go to the bank and change to the highest denominations when I am traveling. Banks will normally ask that you order in advance. But the serial number issue is a fraud because it is still a valid legal tender and has the same value. The serial numbers are just there to keep track of notes produced and especially for criminal activities. It should not be refused anywhere. But you trust Nigeria.

All the reasons the man gave are just mere excuses, the value of a dollar is a dollar regardless of the domination and/or serial numbet. As long as it is not a fake note or coin, it remain a legal tender and the exchange rate should only strictly be guide by demand and supply. But trust 9ja to create rules to exploit their people.

Nice content especially for people to whom the information here would surprising Lesson 1 and 2 are pure examples of the dysfunctional system we run in Nigeria. FX of USD to Naira is based on the value of $1 to naira, but if the denomination is lower than $50, the goal post changes. Suddenly dollar loses value. Some Banks and BDC even reject lower denominations. The CBN recently put out a statement threatening to sanction those culpable but that's where it ends.....a threat Then the issue of series or year. Like it gets me worked up. Nigeria is a funny place , like Nigeria just has a way of making a tradition out of the abnormal.

As a visitor to the country, the BEST rate in the entire country is Murtala Mohammed Airport Lagos. From the airport the rate starts decreasing. The only catch is make sure you count your money because it is guarranteed to never be complete the first time! But in terms of rate, best place by far!!

Only in NGN: Why is the exchange rate influenced by denomination of a currency (ie dollar or pound)? A dollar is a dollar regardless of the domination. Also, what has the date on the serial number got to do with an exchange rate? As long as it still a legal tender it should not matter. Again a dollar is a dollar as long as it is not fake. NG is one funny country, they take advantage of every situation and try to find reasons just to exploit people. Whilst this video is very useful for the benefit of tourists; it just goes to show how we think in NG. Many tourists will return back to their countries will little respect for our shallow mentality and primitive approach to justify an exchange rate. In my humble opinion, an exhange rate should track demand and supply. The denomination should be irrelevant as long as the note or coin is real and remain an officially a legal tender. In my history of changing money in France, America and UK the reasoning behind their exchange rate nothing like what this man has shared. I only see reasons for why they cheat people. Thanks for sharing. It just means that people should shine their eyes when coming to Lagos, Nigeria.

I bring naira back to Canada with me from Nigeria whenever I travel to Nigeria i make sure I bring some brand new naira note back like 50,000 to 100,000 naira back in 500notes or one thousand notes in my pocket on my way out of Nigeria that is the money I expened for some few days in Nigeria and it keep me safe from the headache of getting robbed at the airport.

I was a victim of this old series new series thing in December 2020 when I returned. I was shocked that bank won't accept my old series which I didn't know the meaning at the time. A bank in America giving me thousands of dollars and to be told it won't be accepted in Nigeria, I was puzzled. Then I'm offered lower rate withe aboki. The whole thing tire me

It happened to me and I refused to take a lower rate. I brought it back. I worked too hard for my money to settle for less. $100 is $100 whether it's 1999 or 2009 series. The worth remains the same to me. Got wiser after that experience

Sometimes, bank don't approve some notes. I think he could have highlighted more points on this. Like what are reasons, etc. But still, it's really helpful. You covered a number of things. Kudos to you!!

I share Mr Chris's number (my personal money changer) in the description box. Yes you're right re: the other denominations. For British pounds, anything less than a 20 pound note warrants a lower rate.

I ran into the serial number wahala back in 2019, I personally think it is idiotic and hubris on the part of these money dealers. The US government that issued those bills is still accepting all serial number insofar it is not a counterfeit. I have a 2 dollar bill as we speak, been holding it for almost 10 years now, (sentimental) but I can spend it any time and no one will complain. Just the little things we do in Nigeria to hurt one another.

It’s the issue of the Nigeria government not the money dealers re: serial numbers. The government doesn’t accept those bills
