The random number book is useful if you're doing experiments - for A level Biology and Psychology I had to use a random number generator. Which was a laminated piece of A4 with a bunch of numbers. This was because people are naturally drawn to certain patterns of number so choosing them yourself creates experimental bias.

Robert Dick has been one of the most influential flutists of modern times. He was just awarded the lifetime achievement award from the National Flute Association. "The Other Flute" is a must read for any serious contemporary musician. Please invite him to perform on the show. He can change your mind that flute music isn't always stuffy and that contemporary music is more than just abstract artsy nonsense. He will amaze you with his playing and the sounds he can get out of the flute. ‪

"The Other Flute" is arguably the most important book in the literature since Johann Joaquim Quantz published "On Playing the Flute" in 1752. Robert Dick is the leading innovator of flute technique, developing 20th Century inventions into many musical contexts including classical, rock and jazz, personally discovering original techniques, including invention of the first advance in intonation in 200 years, the glissando head joint, which is like a whammy bar for the flute. He is the inspiration and teacher of a generation of experimental flutists and has expanded the artistic reach of the oldest instrument substantially - a remarkable feat after 30,000 years' evolution of flute playing.

Flutist, Robert Dick, would make an entertaining guest on your show. His book has pioneered the development of contemporary techniques (different sound effects) and developed a whole new genre of flute playing. His playing is a cross between the avant garde and channeling Jimi Hendrix. Robert has invented the glissando headjoint which is a flutist's version of a guitar's whammy bar.

Robert Dick is a very well-known and respected flutist who is an expert on advanced flute techniques. Fallon is making fun of the guy's name, which I'm sure he's heartily sick of hearing, but if you are a flutist interested in performing contemporary 20th and 21st century music, this IS a book you should read!

akaElleLatham This is true in the UK, they use the word flautist. In the U.S., the word flutist is more commonly used. Robert Dick is American. However, all of us who play the flute don't really care which one you use when you call us. Just so you do, and offer us a paying gig while you're at it. ;-D

Hello, I was watching your comedic sketch on March 16th 'Do Not Read'. In it you featured a book called the Other Flutist by Robert Dick. The Flute Community would love to see you do a follow up to this, and have Robert Dick come on and play, perhaps with the band? He is not only a well respected flutist in our community, but an amazing inventor as well. He invented this extension for the flute called a glissando headjoint. It is like a small trombone that attaches to the flute to make it slide like Jimi Hendrix guitar did. He also plays unique flutes so large, the are just as tall as he is( called the Contra Bass Flute), among many many more. I promise the tonight show audiences has never heard anything like this before! Just go to youtube and search his name so many amazing videos. He is also a great person, with a unique personality- he would a great on camera. Are you up for the challenge? Thanks! Monica Williams San Francisco, CA

Robert Dick is a great musician, the Tonight Show should bring him on to play a tune with the Roots. He plays some far out music but I also saw him once jam with Whitesnake on TV, and he does some great versions of Jimi Hendrix. He's sort of the top flute player for that kind of music, and it would be a nice thing for the show to do, especially as he will fit right in playing with the Roots.

***** I mean, a histogram can tell you if your data displays any skewness or kurtosis with relation to whether your data exhibits a normal distribution. If you have a histogram that exhibits a great deal of kurtosis, for instance, you'd likely infer that your data exhibits uniformity instead of normality. But in a theoretical sense, what do numbers even mean, man?

Robert Dick is one of the greatest flutists, and teachers of flutists, who's ever lived. His compositions are groundbreaking and beautiful. The Other Flute is a significant book that has provided many professional flutists with cutting edge technique. Teachers are constantly insulted in today's media. What purpose is served by using a teacher's life's work for a stupid, hurtful joke? I think that The Tonight Show should apologize and invite Robert Dick to perform one of his spectacular compositions for flute on the show.

Voicu Violeta I don't it's about him being upset as much as his friends and colleagues. It would have been different if they had opened the book, or at least made a joke about the subject, instead of making junior-high locker room remarks about his name. Johnny Carson would be mightily ashamed of the depths to which The Tonight Show has sunk.

@violeta585 9 жыл бұрын
John Melcher I'm sorry, your comment makes no sense to me. You're saying Dick is not upset, but his friends are? -_- And that they should've made fun of his work?!? I'd think the contrary, if the book is indeed one of the best in the world, why would they make fun of it's contents?...if they had done that, then these guys complaining would've had a better case...as is, it's just a bit of innocent fun. And Carson did all kinds of jokes & bits, including very silly & w/ sexual innuendos...so stop acting like he was doing some kind of super highbrow comedy.

I normally like Jimmy Fallon but I thought his teasing of Robert Dick was worse than sophomoric, it was wrong. As a professional pianist and composer, I can say that almost everyone in the classical music industry knows the genius and gift of humanity that is Robert Dick. Rarely do classical musicians get the attention they deserve. Someone needs to do their homework before insulting his life work on national television. The least you could do would be to have him on your show. But that's just my opinion.
@Ziruthiel

Sunny Knable I guess you should watch the clip again. "Someone needs to do their homework before insulting his life work on national television." This comment makes no sense, they're not insulting his lifes work. what they are doing is a college humor by connecting his name ("Dick") with the instrument (Flute) it's pretty common humour style around the world and has nothing to do with his work. So maybe someone needs to do their homework before posting comments on a worldwide available portal like YT ?

If that book contained true random numbers it can be of some use. But on a related topic: Let's say you are a programmer who needs a true random number from time to time. So you would just start with the 1. one and cross one off everytime you used it. Suppose you make a type-o: Is the number you used now truely random or did you transform a truely random number into a "man-made" one?

That book is there for mathematical operations, usually within statistics, that involve random number generators.

Books or tables of random digits are used to randomize experiments or simulations or at least, were before computers, now, they are often used by statistics students so their work can be checked since the key and the student would get the same string of digits. But I see how this could be funny to someone who didn't know that.

I'm taking a probably and statistics class and we actually use a page of random numbers to simulate a random scenario, so that's what that book might have been intended for.

Host Markiplier! The guy is an internet comedian and entertainer, who helped, and continuously keeping on, raising so much money for charity, and recently been the co host of sxsw gaming awards. He got the body of a beast and a heart of a little girl, who highly deserve of being on your show. You do not have to host him on the tv... if you're worrying about showing tv users the internet... you may host him here, here where everyone already don't use tv... you will get views in the millions and will show you're more than other snob tv people, you do what you do for the fun and beauty of it, not the fame, not the money. Call these videos "collabs with youtubers" posted only on youtube, these guys work hard, and the beauty of youtube, you get famous by being liked, meaning these guys are humble good people (well at least most of them, look at Mark for example) it's heart worming and amazing to know that good people get rich, because, they do good with it. I want you to acknowledge this beauty, give these guys the respect and place they deserve, you are able to, just like they are able to help for charity, care about their fans, be good people.. they don't have to, they choose it. do you? I'm just rumbling by now... In any case best regards.
