I learned something today. Been off the farm for 60 years, but I know well about welded wire and low carbon wire. Wr used to have a tool to tighten low carbon fencing [had to do that every year or two. I don't recal having Hi-Tensil fencing back in those days.

Thanks for the demonstration. I have found that welded wire works great for keeping veggies in the garden. Rabbits and chickens don’t get in either. But for any livestock, you are right, it’s pretty worthless.

Mark! Mark! Mark! You used the wrong welded wire. Even a newbie knows: - Spend the extra few bucks and buy the 2”X2”. - There is nothing better to keep birds outten your chimney. - A four foot roll can be cut in half to get twice the length… which is perfect for keeping rabbits out of your carrot & lettuce patches. - if you clip the top horizontal wire off… the neighbor boys won’t dare risk poking their nethers by climbing over the spikey verticals left sticking up. And…. Here’s a Pro tip for you… You might have to change the bolt pattern on your 2X4 stretchers if this is the first time you’ve stretched the 2X2 grid… DON’T build a whole new stretcher. After all, 2X4’s are getting kinda pricey. There is no need to thank me for enlightening y’all about this… it is just one of the many free services that I provide to fellow fencing aficionados!

i used the welded wire for a 6 ft deer fence, at the time i could not find anything else in 6 ft. still cant locally. it works great to keep deer out of a garden. there are uses but its not a livestock fence.

Honestly I kind of hate woven wire. Started off my working career by fixing fence as a teenager, and I quickly grew to dislike doing anything to it. Worse yet is that the salvage yards refuse to take it, so after taking it down, the rolls of it just end up in an unsightly pile that I have no idea what to do with. Any new stuff I put up is two-strand barb wire. Usually use either railroad ties or cut-down utility poles for corners and steel t-posts in between. I have an old rope stretcher that my dad and grandpa used and it works pretty good. One thing I am thinking about using woven wire for, though, is maybe trying to construct a dirt berm for a shooting range so I can have a nice flat front on it, but I'm wondering if the wire will hold that weight or just snap on me.

That welded wire is what I use around the chicken yard. The people I bought from used it around the yard behind the house to line the 3 rail fence to keep their Chihuahuas from mixing with the horses. 😂

4:02 do you collect the snap off, loose bits ? What is the best way to get them as they are flying Off everywhere ?

Yup, any loose bits usually go into a 5-gallon bucket and leave the job with me. If I see anything small and loose on the ground it gets picked up and chucked into the post.

( they tell us woodchucks can jump 6 feet and you would Need your fence to be loose gooses at the top. Nice to know there is Something out there somewhere. Welded wire used to be a lot tougher. Back in the 1970s I built dog kennels from it (big dogs, tough on fence), you could get it tight and it didn't bend easily, and I used and re-used the same wire for 15 years, and it was salvage when I got it. Totally different from the crap that's on the market now, which is utter crap (I'm surprised you could stretch it at all, usually it just deforms and pops the welds). The old welded wire didn't rust easily either (dogs pissing on it for years, no damage) but the current crap practically melts if you spit on it. Greets from Montana :)

A agree with what your saying but what the price difference between red brand and high tensile. I can see if fencing in cattle then spend the extra and do it right. Other than that just don’t drive your ranger into the red brand.

Hi Mark, great video! Just to let you know some brands like Stay Tuff, which I was forced to buy during Covid and nothing else was available, does state in their specs the following: Pre-stripped rolls, all of the STAY-TUFF fence rolls come with 18 in of vertical stays removed from both ends of the roll Tight knot spacing prevents even the smallest dogs from getting through Useful life of the fence is 3 to 4X that of traditional hinge-joint fencing Attractive and less visually obtrusive than chain link Can be installed with wood or steel posts and rails Top and bottom wire are a 12ga high-tensile with breaking strength 1500-1600 lbs Breaking strength is around 1,450 lbs Not sure if most of this is any good but it does say the top and bottom wire is high-tensile 12 guage so that likely explains why the top stayed strong/tight and the middle was swiss cheese. LOL "Dinkleman"!

I bought the wedgeboard and boundary strainers from you guys and stretched my farm fencing last week. The chains from my boundary strainers prevent me from tieing the fencing to the last post where my boundary strainer chains were wrapped around. What's the trick...pull the fence overtight, tie off everywhere then remove the boundary strainers and tie onto the last post?

Welded wire works well but a chicken house works better. I poured concrete and needed something to hold it together, had welded wire left over from my grandad's farm, it worked well for that.

@@bigonprivacy2708 the savings comes from high tensile wire being stronger than low carbon so the wire guage is smaller but i think a 330 ft roll has got to be 40-50 lbs at least without looking it up but i did and similar fence rolls red brand 191lb and bekaert 121lbs

Can or should you use a “cheater bar” over the handle of the tensioner to get more leverage to tighten the fence more?

You can, yes. Exercise caution. At that point those handles are under enough tension they'll do some damage if you lose your grip.

Well … shoot. I just bought a place that was fenced with welded wire. The stuff was never stretched and is barely fastened to t-posts. Where it is “fastened”, they used bungee cords and zip ties. The posts aren’t spaced correctly and most aren’t driven down far enough. With everything else I need to do with the house, I don’t even know where to start with this mess. I appreciate your pointers though, it gives some food for thought.
