We constantly hear that change should be affordable and cost effective. True, but, in reality, that's easily said than done. Complexity makes change hard. We can't shy away from the hard problems posed by domains and business needs. So, how can we solve complicated problems without getting dragged into the quagmire of what appears to be an inevitable complexity? In this keynote, an award winning author and software practitioner will share experiences and observations from working on multiple software projects, about what leads to complexities, the traps developers and organizations fall into, and what we can do to effectively deal with these common, recurring issues we see across domains and products.

Resume Driven Development - what a right explosive thought about the current truth. I also observe the same, as people don't care if certain framework adds a value to the project but they want to use it either they want to work on that to add it on their resume or they know it & it is there in their resume. So if one observes the timeline of such people honestly, they wouldn't have worked anything in their projects, except making the mess & then jump to other company.

7:30 - actually XML is good in Spring projects ,as you see all bean definitions etc. at one spot. Annotations are cool, but when you wanna search the entire application, each time you have to search in IDE.

problem is not about externalizing configuration, problem is 1) about XML being too verbose and heavy (YAML is a more modern alternative) and 2) the obsession to make EVERYTHING configurable when in practice it's not required

configuration in XML might be from hell but configuration in JSON/YAML is the same as in XML with the added bonus of not having a schema and no validation and no comments :-/

There is a JSON schema? Lots of JSON libraries had it baked in. The first draft schema was in 2009, we have draft 8 (2019-09) now. Most JSON API don't need a schema though as usually you have auto generated docs from the API.
