Don't worry. Buckwheat is tough and loves the summer heat. Once you get a thunderstorm or two it will start to pop. I would suggest adding an annual clover. It's not too late to broadcast some berseem or crimson clover. In the fall I like to broadcast a perennial white clover like Ladino. It makes a thick bed in the spring, suppresses weeds, and is a tremendous compliment to buckwheat. The two together seem to thrive off each other. The clover is happy down low, and the buckwheat takes off and blooms.

Improve sections of the area, one at a time. Apply another deep layer of woodchips, and then cover with a light prohibitive cover and leave on for 90 days (perhaps over winter) then apply some compost as a top cover and then plant). While the area is covered the worm will come up and do their job under the covered area. Materials: black tarp, old carpet, card board boxes).

Do nothing farming....Clover is a great suggestion,, but for soil amendment purposes i'd like to see an extra heavy addition of legumes to create the natural nitrogen factor then everything else will benefit greatly. there are many great choices for the legumes.

Try a cover crop mix that will build up nitrogen and organic matter, clovers, radishes, peas, hairy vetch... you might have to do some research depending on if you want cool season or warm season crops. Just get a mix of grasses, legumes and clovers. Go to the NCRS website. They should help. Good luck.

not sure if it helpful perhaps hemp plants, everything i read is they hardy will give you seed for flour and oil and start breaking up the soil for other plants, the stalks with processing can be used for rope apparently
