This video was not planned... When changing strings from Perpetual to Evah Medium on my plywood bass, I realized that both string models sounded very similar, and I thought you might be interested to see/hear this, so I did a quick video.
BTW: I have a brand new channel which is intended for other instrumentalists to play along with me. But maybe you would like to hear my basslines too or jam with two basses? Check it out - and subscriptions are welcome of course: / @jazzstandardbasslines...

The sound of this video was recorded straight into my Panasonic HCV 777 with a Sony ECM 909A microphone. (No studio quality this time, sorry!)

Bravo. Tolle Videos.

It’s definitely a close call. Actually I didn’t keep it straight in my head whether E/A are EP or D/G but to me E/A have an air or a hint of high frequency presence and D/G sound rounder with a bit denser core and doesn’t have that presence. I think it is a good approach to have thicker D/G than usual since often those are the strings that people find too low tension or too flexing or thin sounding or too thin on the left hand fingers and also within the same set end up having too much presence. It’s funny that the whole geometry and design lead up to have this systematic issue as if D & G belong to a different instrument or sort of split character! I found many people love the tone and playability of E/A and they are not quite happy with their D/G or vice versa. Even I feel the same on metal string guitar. I can’t stand the piercing B/E when I try yo set my amp / pedals to have some presence on E/A/D. The only setup that sounds uniform for me is classical guitar.

Blindfold test with a full set on the same bass would have been exciting. Sounds like a pretty good match, find the evas a notch duller (not in a bad way).

Great stuff as always, nice playing too! I have solo Evah on my top 2 strings, tuned to G and D, going to see how Perpetual on the A and E will sound with them. Maybe too much different tension, we’ll see. Have you ever tried so-called “bumped” sets? Where you use an A string for your low E, a D string for your low A, etc? Can make for a fun set with plain gut G/D (not bumped) on top, then something like Mittel Evah or Stark Spiro D/A tuned to A/E on bottom… wonder if Perpetuals would work “bumped” like that….

Thank you! No I never tried bumped sets. I think this would be too loose for my taste.

Nice. So metal on bottom and synthetic on top is to synthetic on bottom gut on top. The way the blend I mean. Make sense? Anyway I do enjoy the videos Herve!

Yes, you can put it that way. But I didn't really do this to demonstrate a mixed set, I was just surprised, that these different strings sounded as if they were one set and wanted to share that experience.

In my experience always work brighter strings for the E and A and darker strings on the D and G That makes sense that the Evahs G and D sound great with the perpetuals E and A

Thank you very much for your videos. Could you please tell us, what piezo sistem you use atached to the bridge in your new instrument? It seems that you decided not to go the tonedexter way... thanks a lot in advance !

Hi Jorge, I use a German pickup, the ANS bassbalsereit standard. Some colleagues upgraded to a fishman full circle which is probably more natural than the ANS. But still I like the ANS very much. Of course the tone Dexter will give you a more acoustic sound. But I realized that with the toneDexter you have to experiment a lot, and I prefer to keep things simple, and to avoid having to setup too much equipment on Gigs. That's why I preferred to stick with the pickup.

My biggest issue with Eva's is that they really don't sing well in the upper registers, and especially so with Arco. I was using Perpetual Solos for a while, but the strings went quite dull in a very short amount of time. I am hoping the standard gauge is better in this. Staying clearer longer. Thanking you for your bass service!

Oh really? I always found Evahs to be very "singing", but that depends of ones personal taste and maybe also of the bass.

Do you think this set would work with evah pirazzi weich on D and G? Or would the tension be very diferent? When i see this vídeo i found what i want. Cause i like the sound of G and D of Evah Pirazzi, but i don't like to much the sound of A and E.

I think this should work too. I prefer the feel of the weich. But I think the mittel sounds more "massive" and especially in this combination it can be an advantage. Give it a try and let me know!
