This is so stupid ... “Latino” and “Hispanic” are 2 of the many words that english speakers use incorrectly. Latin is a language, not a race, or ethnicity. The language spread out of Rome, evolved & mixed with others. Nobody is “Latin” but many people/continents speak a language that has Latin influence. Like this guy explains, USA incorrectly uses the word “arbitrarily” to classify people for census (voting & campaigning) purposes. “Hispanic” is from the Kingdom of “Hispania” which was the name given to the whole Iberian peninsula in Europe. It had a political split (around year 1200) & became Portugal & Spain. We Portuguese & Spanish are the ORIGINAL Hispanics & speak Latin based languages. When England started colonizing North America, Spain & Portugal set out to colonize South America, then mixing with indigenous Aztecs, Arawaks, Wapichana as well as their African slaves, resulting in what Americans call “brown” people. The modern people of South America are not Latin, or “brown”. They are of mixed ethnicities including the original Hispanic bloodlines. Thats why in the 70’s & 80’s Portuguese people WERE included as Hispanic on the census forms. But the main reason lots of portuguese-americans stopped calling themselves Hispanic is because of the negative connotation with “Hispanic” being synonymous with “Mexican” or “illegal” and border-jumping... especially as this guy mentioned in California... but if you tell someone on the East Coast that you’re Portuguese they’ll say “oh, yea, I could tell you werent white.” Again, misuse of the word “white”. Not everyone in Europe is “white”. There’s a gigantic difference between Nordic and Mediterranean.
@daverei53622 жыл бұрын
Many incorrect statements in your comment. "Hispania" wasn't a kingdom. The Portuguese never were included in the Hispanic/Latino census category. If the Portuguese reject the Hispanic/Latino label in the US it's not because of the "negative conotation associated with it", but because it doesn't represent their ethnicity. The word "Latin" has evolved into multiple meanings depending on the context. It's not illogical to call mestizo people from post-colonial Spanish-America "Hispanic" Or "Latino", but it can't mean "Romance-language speaker", or "Ancient Roman" all at once.

@Itz Yanii - wrong, 'Hispanic' means 'related to spanish language'. In case you are not aware Portuguese (and Gaelician) derive from 'vulgar latin' (or sermo vulgaris). It's quite diferent from 'Spanish', often associated with Castilian (central Spain). Iberian is something far different :) Bye...
@nmarques78854 жыл бұрын
@Itz Yanii Spanish and Castilian language wise are the same thing in academical terms. It is composed of many dialects, like Portuguese in which European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese are the most common dialects. Basque is a different language like Mirandês os also a different language. Either way 'hispanic' and 'latino' in the US is used related to ethnicity and not culture or language. See the US Census :) It's quite clear. Claiming Portuguese mainlanders are the same ethnicity of Latin Americans is plain stupidity and ignorance. Portuguese in fact have 2 genetic markers which make them unique, 1 only found in Northern Portugal and the other one of the oldest know only present in massive quantities in Portugal and some regions of Spain, mainly Galicia...
@docdave19944 жыл бұрын
@Itz Yanii Castillan is used in every parts of spain, unlike Basque or Galician, therefore it is not irrational to call castillan "spanish" in that it's the national language. Latino is a supra ethnicity in that they belong to a common culturo-geopolitical entity that is Latin America, like Europe, Africa or Asia. In fact, Latin Americans (particular the hispanophones) are much more closely related between them than Europeans, Africans or Asians. You see heavy similarities in certain older traditional foods dishes (creme renversee/ flan to alcatra/bouef en daube, etc), religion (Roman Catholic), in style of old traditional clothing, some similar names and surnames, etc. All these countries are uniquely VERY festive people and cultures-something latin people usually are. It is very pronounced compared to other cultures. Without Latin people, the Americas ("latinos and hispanics") and many parts of the world would not be the same cultures. Down to genetics, French, Spanish ,Portuguese share similarities with one another as well (they all share genetic similarities with neighboring Basque too, though Portuguese share more with France and Spain more with Basque) which would have been passed down to South Americans, Carribean people, etc. The big question is why aren't Brazilians really labelled "latino" when they are from a latin influenced culture (Portugal) and in South America?

@Gui J Dude, "Latin America" is a term coined by Napoleon III to contrast Portugal and Spain's colonies with England's. It designates a geo-political entity and those who hail from it. It's a purely linguistic concept: not all Latinos (eg Chicanos in the US) are romance language speakers, and not all romance language speakers are Latinos.Just like English, Portuguese is a cross-cultural and isn't the language of single ethnic group. I know that Latinos love to claim the Non-Latin-americans into their Latino sphere because it's flattering. In Europe the Portuguese , Spaniards , Italian , French , Romanian and Moldovan speakers are the Latin people because they speak Latin languages. When it comes to genetics they are not related at all , the Portuguese do not have the Etruscan , Umbrians , Apulian , etc , genes of modern Italians meaning that there was no admixture between the Romans and the local population. The Roman genes are not found in most of the Latin \ Romance speakers in Europe but only in small pockets in eastern Spain and south France. In the Americas it is pretty much the same. In 1500 there was 3 million genetic English persons and 1 million genetic Portuguese. There are today 90 million persons of English ancestry and 30 million of Portuguese. The USA was the most colonized territory by an European colonial power and 27 million of the USA citizens are of English ancestry (8% to 9% of the population). In Brazil there was never a colonization but after it became independent there was a strong migration from Portugal to Brasil. It is estimated that around 2.5 million Brazilians are of Lusitanic ancestry and further 2.5 million are of Lusitanic culture , mainly Jews , Gypsies , north Africans and immigrants from all over Europe that were in Portugal and moved to Brazil. Around 1.20% of the Brazilian are of Lusitanic ancestry a 1.20 of Portuguese culture. Genetics do not lie. In central and south America like in Europe they are Latin because they speak Latin languages , being genetically Latin\Romance from the Romans or Hispanic\Iberian from the Spaniards and Portuguese , perhaps in some areas of Argentina , Brazil and Uruguay due to the strong influx of Italian immigrants. The Portuguese and Spaniards from Madrid area and the Basque Country are genetic very close related but in general Latin Europeans are not related to each other at all and much less with the Latin Americans.

I'm sorry, sir, but you have no idea what you're talking about. From Northern to Southern Brasil, all populations have the majority of European genes (spanning from 60% to 77%, North to South). Even though most of white Brazilians are from Italian descent, almost every single brazilian has Portuguese genes and, from the white populations (that makes about 50% of Brazilian population), 20% are of portuguese ancestry. White luso-brazilians will generally have around 80% of their genes from Portugal/Iberian Peninsula. And, all things considered, this is a trend all over Latin America. The absolute majority of Hispanics do have a huge genetic influence from the Peninsula.

Greeks and Balcanic peoples are also mixing their blood with non-European muslims and/or Middle Eastern peoples. Russians and other European-Uralic nations have been mixing their genes with Central Asian peoples for millenia, as well. So, if not having mixed blood defines what 'European' means, you've just cut off probably more than half of the people who are actually in Europe. Of course Brazilians are not European, since Brazil is located in America, but a huge chunk of the Brazilian population can be defined as 'White', since they're of mostly European descent. Even if there's a 15 - 20% of non-European blood in many White Brazilians, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference from a Native European, anyway.

When people use "Hispanic" as a race they mean "mestizo", since the vast majority of Hispanics are mestizo. In regards to Latino as a culture, I think the connection to ancient Latin is just a attempt at an ego boost, because Latin America has little to do with Ancient Rome. Latin America is a geopolitical concept referring to part of the Western hemisphere colonized by Portugal or Spain, and all that involves such a greater indigenous population, greater miscigenation in DNA and culture.

this is absurd I get it Spanish/Hispanic culture is a bit different from Portuguese culture But if we consider all Spanish speaking countries as Hispanic Meaning that say Mexico and Columbia have the same exact cultural food then that would be wrong I believe the Portuguese and there by extended to the Brazilians are Hispanic due to the fact that if you even take a dna test you can’t see the difference between Spanish and Portuguese dna And side note people try to say lusitans or lusophones or something saying that only the Portuguese on the Iberian pennisula are directly descended from preceltic tribes But that was over 2 thousand years ago and besides that another side note the moorish people invaded the Iberian peninsula to for over 700 years and people try to say that they didn’t mix with the locals If you are one of those people listen to your self if you were with a group of people for hundreds of years you’re telling me you wouldn’t have just a few times mixed with each other All I’m saying is Portuguese and Spanish or too similar and people don’t want the Portuguese to be ascosiated with the word Hispanic and neither do the Portuguese and if that’s the case Then there should be a new word that includes all Portuguese and Spanish Culture including from Spain Portugal all or South America and the carribean excluding the French speaking countries Mozambique Andorra all of the Portuguese and Spanish speaking and culturaly connected countries should be included under the new word Hisportic 😂 Come up with ideas in the comments please

Your comment relies on a feeling and mirrors a US-American perspective where Anglos tend to minimize the differences between exogroup and Hispanics tend to claim the Portuguese in an attempt aggrandizement complex and run away from their indigenous identity they're trying to downplay. The #1 criteria for being "Hispanic" is to be from or have ties to "spanish-speaking country", that alone disqualifies the Portuguese as Hispanic and makes any further only speculative. For a cultural perspective too "Hispanic" is a mixed bag, with heavy Amerindian influence in the Americas. DNA studies, even those commercial tests are able to discriminate between Portuguese and spanish, yet European population intermixed so much that the DNA overlaps a great deal. Being a cross cultural language, it's not specific culture nor ethnicity, you know a "one size fit all"type of approach is not going to work. There is no need to create a term since they already exist: Portugal, Portuguese, Lusophone. Anything else is only taking away from the Portuguese identity and will be rejected by Portuguese individuals.
@joshuaserrao49515 жыл бұрын
Lusitanosdomundo Org If a on size fits all approach isn’t going to work then why do we call all of South America Hispanic/Latino They have different cultures some areas had more slaves some areas didn’t some areas had more natives some didn’t some areas had mixed more than others They is no way people from Venezuela will look exactly like people from Mexico The southern americas are very diverse and have many different look to people in each country and within each country All I’m saying is if we include these Germanic sections in Europe and these Slavic sections in Europe why is it so crazy we include this Hispanic/Lusophone section ?

@@joshuaserrao4951 Latinos have in common Latin America as their home. Hispanics have in common the spanish language. Nothing more, nothing less. Like I've previously said, LatAm and European cultures are very different that's I think it's absurd to believe or expect that all Romance-language speakers to be culturally alike or similar. Since I can tell you're Hispanic yourself and you agree to state that Hispanics are very different from one another, them why lumping them together with Lusophones? Plus Lusophone massively reject the Hispanic label called upon them. How about. I'm fine with a Lusophone/Hispanic grouping as long as all are labeled as Lusophone.

This guy is a racist. Portuguese and Spaniards are Latino. Spaniards are BOTH Hispanic and Latino. Hispanic is derived from Hispania, which means "land of the rabbits" and refers to anyone from Spain. It was the ancient name for Spain when the people from ancient Latium (from where the Latin people come) in Roman empire was occupying the Iberian peninsula. Portuguese are Lusitanos AND Latino. The thing is, the term Lusitano is not widely known of or used outside of Portuguese, unlike Hispanic, especially in the United States. The Spaniards themselves identify as Hispanos, and they are the original Hispanics. People in Latin america are referred to as such PRECISELY because of Spain & Portugal and their conquest and colonization of the region. There is no difference in meaning between "Latino", with an O and the word Latin. Latin"O" is how the word Latin is said in Spain/Portugal. Anyone saying "Latino" only applies to Latin Americans shows their ignorance. Latino = Spanish & Portuguese for Latin. Central and South America are forever linked to the Iberian Penisula through hundreds of years of history, language, cultural affinities, religion, and genetics. The original Latin peoples are descended from the area now known as Italy. There is where the Latium people come from and the Roman empire had its start. The Roman empire conquered and occupied everything around the Mediterranean and beyond including the Iberian Penninsula, the Romans "Latinized" the Iberians, bringing to them eventually the Roman catholic religion, their language, which evolved into their own languages. Some of their genetics and customs and culture. The Spaniards, Portuguese are second-generation Latin countries. When the Spanish and Portuguese became dominant, they began to explore and conquer like the Romans. The Spanish/Portuguese did the same thing in the Americas but on a much larger scaler and changing the genetic makeup of the continent. Again, this man is a supremacist and a racist.
@lusitanosdomundo4 жыл бұрын
It's funny how you carefully omit to mention that the Americas were already populated at the time of EUropean visit, and those people already there had a culture of their own. Those people haven't been wiped out, unlike in North America, which is why the US and Canada were always a lot closer to Europe than Latin America. Those brown people, their descendants and their cultures are still around. I know Latin Americans are very racists and look down on whomever is more indigenous-looking than they are. But that's their problem, their passion. I think you're too stuck inside your West Coast Hispanic reality. You should travel to Europe, what I am saying will come into perspective. It won't be a pleasant surprise, but it will be an eye-opener, and a reality check for you.

Latinos are a mixed race, which is a mix of "(ANY)" other race with, italian, Spanish or Portuguese or french, which are a mix of different races themselves for example latin is a language not a European race, it is only a race outside these countries. Heres why... Portuguese are a mix of Moors (persian race), Norse (Celtic/viking) which results in the race called (lusitanos) but the name comes from religious nonsense from the Norse celtic people which were dark religious people, thankfully as of 2001 portugal no longer identifies dark celtic religion as a Portuguese identity only historical tribal accolade for educational purposes but one northern district still practices its heritage. The Italians are persian/caucasian. The spanish are Norse (celtic) (Non persian middle eastern) note persians were north African and Egyptian (africa), not middle eastern. So the answer to that question is no! And no European country is of latin race because the latin race is a mix of Italian, spain, Portugal or french a mix with any other mix, if you are caucasian and have a kid with a french, spanish Portuguese or Italian, your kid is officially latin, ( latin caucasian) and that goes for any other mix from any place any race, it is a common misconception that latin races are solely south American when that's not true and the misconception comes from political crap, the first Latins started in Africa during and after colonisation of the Portuguese. Original Latins are from africa, specifically Cape verde which was one of the first places to be colonised by the Portuguese and in general, portugal was also the first to exploration and colonization which in terms of colonization is nothing to be proud of other than the fact that now all that is over and our great country can focus on showing what great culture and country Portugal is... Latin is a language! Portuguese Latin : south america/ africa/ Asia (china) (India) (Indonesia) Australasia/North America (USA) (Not canada) Hispanic Latin (Spanish): south America / Asia. French : africa / north america (canada) So the factual answer to the question is no. And please try to educate the canadians and USA that they are latins! They still think they are british, it's okay young country with only 300 yrs (APRX) I'm glad I have settled the confusion. Enjoy...

Portuguese people consider themselves as 'Portuguese'; You know, that small country in Europes western tip? The one with over 1000 years (considering the 1st County of Portugal)... The one with the oldest borders in the world? The first and long lasting global empire? You see 'Latino' or 'Hispanic' associated with race; Latin is language... But then again, Portuguese has also other important parts, for example from germanic language. Our judicial system is based in the old Visigoth system (germanic), etc etc etc.... If you want a clear answer, racially wise: go research US Census documentation, which considers Portuguese as 'European Stock'/'white'. Only Spain isn't considered that way ;). Have fun... and remember: US CENSUS has the answer you are searching for ;)
