i am attending my first morning mass on monday. The church i will visit is rather large so i thought that there will be fewer people there on monday morning and i wont feel intimidated. So i can concentrate on my prayers. I have been on a spiritual journey. God led me to the catholic church. It feels wierd, but i have become a believer. I will become close to god

I am not able to attend mass as our church has been closed due to COVID. However, I have been watching a televised mass which includes a Spiritual Communion. I noticed you didn't mention women wearing veils. Some churches do this and others don't. It's a good idea to keep a scarf in your purse just in case. Also I liked your idea of waiting until the last song ends. I have always done that because I enjoy the music and those in the choir spend a lot of time preparing for the mass to contribute to it with their gift of music (vocal or instrumental).

Thank you, thank you, thank you for addressing the whole “don’t judge the way other people receive Jesus” and that it’s between them and God. As a Protestant convert, one of the most offputting things was entering a Church that supposed to be unitive and like coming home and finding people would judge and make comment about people receiving in the hand (or on the tongue, the comments flowed both ways) or someone wearing a veil or not, or if they kneeled to receive or whatever. It really left a bad taste in my mouth initially, so I appreciate you addressing it.

I would just like to make a brief comment about receiving the Holy Eucharist. I suffer terribly from social anxiety and am not always able to leave the house. I often missed Mass as a result because the sensory stimulation/overload from all the people was too much for me and I had panic attacks. I went to confession because my anxiety was further compounded by the thought that I had committed a mortal sin by not attending Mass on Sunday. My Priest took the time to talk to me about my condition, to ask me about my faith and having established that I had at no time separated myself from God he explained that it was not a mortal sin. I was to pray each week for the strength to attend but I knew that large crowds were not possible for me so we agreed that I would go on the quietest day of the week, where only half a dozen people attend. This way I could receive the Holy Eucharist but at the same time, manage my mental health challenges. It doesn't always work out successfully but I know that both my Parish Priest and God know what I am trying to achieve. Just thought I would mention that there can be exceptions and it is worth discussing with your local Priest.

Best thing is to focus yourself before Mass is that the primary Person you are therefore is Jesus. Keep your mind as best as possible on that Focus. Sit in the first pew if that helps keep you focused on the Mass. You can quietly close your eyes and pray thereby minimizing distractions. Basically, at the first sign of being distracted away from God as the primary Divine Person you are going therefore, you have to drag your mind back as you would do a sandbag back to focusing on Him. He is worth it!!!!

If you're wondering what to wear for Sunday mass I would say dress professionally. Dress as you would for a job interview in a corporate office. Nice slacks or a skirt, dressy shirt, and a blazer or cardigan if the top is sleeveless. That being said, Jesus wants you at Mass. If your only option is sweatpants, go in sweatpants. Don't let your clothing options, or anything else, keep you from going to Mass.

@@brittanystrausbaugh6007 Our Lady of Fatima said there would be fashions that offend Our Lord. Leggings alone are not modest as they are nearly painted on leaving nothing to the imagination really. You can bet your bottom dollar that there are eyes on your daughter you don't want on her. We need to be mindful of our neighbors and not be a source of sin for them, that includes dressing appropriately, especially when going before Our Lord. There are some modest and affordable skirts on Amazon. Our comfort level should not be first on our minds when going to Mass. Was Our Lord comfortable during His passion or being nailed to the cross? No. We should sacrifice some comfort if it means being more pleasing to Him. We are going to Mass for Our Lord first and foremost. Padre Pio couldn't hear the confessions of women in skirts shorter than 8 or 9 inches below the knee. I think that went for women who wore pants and sold pants to women. He was approached by his superior about it and Padre Pio said he was doing what Our Lord told him to. www.amazon.com/dp/B08C5829SG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_1ND9FbXESV0Y1

"If the church isn't crying, it's dying." Almost none of the churches in my town have a cry room, and our children, babies and all are wanted by Jesus especially in the Mass. People need to be less concerned about children being distracting and focus more on what Jesus said about bringing children to him. How can they learn if they aren't in the Mass? They don't lose their worthiness to be in His real and true Presence because they are crying. Just some food for thought. My husband personally will pace around the back of the sanctuary with our toddler on his shoulders if he has to for everyone to be in Mass together

Yes children belong in church and that is part of the way for them to learn. But when it comes to crying, you assume that everyone is capable of blocking it out. Many priests cannot because they have not spent a lot of time with babies. Parents who recently lost their child to still birth, crib death, cancer, etc cannot block it out. And let's not forget about that one breast feeding mother who may have milk come in just hearing anyone's baby cry. It's about being respectful of others.
@ashleyslack5960
@ashleyslack5960 3 жыл бұрын
Response edited for clarity: Children, crying or not, belong to God and belong in the Mass, not tucked away. They are real people, not distractions. Infants and toddlers do not cease to be part of God’s family or lose their worthiness to be in His Real Presence just because they are crying. A wealthy parishioner tried to bully our priest this past year on this issue. The gentleman thought he could buy himself a perfectly quiet Mass through his generous financial contributions. My priest responded appropriately of course. If I walked out of every Mass where one of my children spoke a little too loudly while asking questions about what was going on, or when one of my babies was being fussy I would never attend Mass. Women can wear nursing pads if prone to leaking. Priests carry on just fine. And if you are mourning a loss, hiding crying babies is not the solution, nor is their crying the cause. If respect is the concern, please try extending it and a little bit more mercy to people who are trying to live out their vocation of marriage and family life to the best of their God-given ability. I am sorry if it is hard for you to get through the Mass when a child is crying. I love you as a sister in Christ, but I love my kids too and I take our God's teaching to bring the little ones to him very seriously. It's more important than you having a perfectly quiet, I-can-hear-a-pin-drop Mass. Pax Christi.
@jacobkalee
@jacobkalee 3 жыл бұрын
@@laurapederson7725 Those are not legitimate reasons to remove a crying baby. We are also responsible for ourselves and being distracted or allowing ourselves to be emotionally triggered. If someone has lost a spouse for whatever reason and would be sad about seeing us with our spouse, does that mean we shouldn't go to Mass at all or that we should sit apart to not upset people? A nursing mother who has a letdown at the sound of a crying baby would probably have nursing pads on, but we shouldn't be expected to account for that. People have no way of knowing if the mere presence of a baby will remind someone of a stillbirth or other examples of a loss you listed. We shouldn't leave Mass or not bring our children because someone else's feelings might get hurt for our mere presence there. We should be there for God, not other people. There are reasons why we might not be able to bring our children out constantly. We should also do our part to try to be understanding of those people, shouldn't we? Often, children are uncooperative and some will scream, even if they are taken out, to still be heard in Mass. Being a parent of little children can be difficult, especially for people who have many little ones. Maybe someone's spouse died and has no help, so always taking a crying baby out, or upset child of another age, isn't always a reasonable expectation. God allows these things, it would seem, for everyone's sancitification who happens to be there at the time, so we can all realize where we are deficient in virtues and work on it. We all have to do our best to be present for the Mass, for Our Lord, and not leave just because someone might be offended. It's certainly sad to lose a child, but we can only do so much, and dealing with rowdy children at Mass comes with its own trials.

One if not the worst thing that has come from COVID is the fact that people have lost all sense of being reverent. I agree with about everything you said. My one contention, however, is that I don't think it really matters for the most part what you wear at Mass. If it's modest, covering everything from the inner thighs on up to above the majority of the breasts of a woman, and the guys aren't totally sleeveless and showing off their armpits or...well, other worse stuff, then it should be fine. Some people are much poorer than others, or own less than others, and then there are people with sensory issues who are not comfortable wearing certain forms of clothing. Maybe they're homeless or living in a shelter? That, or their washer machine was broken or they couldn't otherwise get laundry done with all that was going on; there could be a myriad of reasons. To me, it seems like poor shaming as well as legalism and nitpickyness regarding these things. If somebody is not coming in wearing Satanic or otherwise offensive or blasphemous things on, or wearing things that are close to exposing private parts or that are all shredded or heavily stained, than maybe that's different. I don't think people should be shamed for only going up to business casual, or a Tshirt and jeans, or sweat pants and a hoodie or whatever though. Jesus and his disciples mostly wore robes and sandals, if I'm not mistaken ...

Just a couple of comments - it's not necessary for a non-Catholic to fast before Mass, I believe the rule is only for Catholics who are receiving Communion. With regard to dress, I would not advise dressing as if you're going to a wedding - this could include mini-skirts, strapless or backless dresses, etc. I would recommend dressing for a job interview as a better guideline. I also don't think it's necessary for a non-Catholic to give money - this is the responsibility of Catholics to support their parish/priests. It could sound like we're paying to go to Mass!

This could make me super scrupulous, esp the part about dressing for a wedding feast and wearing makeup. (Esp for 7am weekday mass). Of course, we should dress modestly always, but I'm not sure if the focus on myself will be good for me. Nuns don't put makeup on or dress any differently on weekday masses, so that's one consolation for my anxiety...they don't put their nicer habit on on Sundays).

Nuns are limited on what they can wear. They are already modest and beautiful. We have to try harder because we are faced with living in the world and have to make slightly different choices, but there are still nice and modest clothing choices.

@@jacobkalee definitely! It's a real effort to be modest always, but important. We shouldn't just be modest for Mass. Anyhow, sometimes, when I haven't slept well, I get up, put on my modest clothing, wash my face and go to Mass. It's either that or miss mass or be too tired for work. I don't think God minds if I haven't put on makeup etc. I think it's better to be at Mass with my Creator (Who btw didn't create me with makeup on). But I also suffer from worry when I hear people saying these things.

@@lilyofthevalley4740 Dressing, acting, and speaking modestly wherever we are is important. Regarding make-up, if we give the world our best, we should try to give God more. He didn't create us to wear make-up, but if we just have the idea to give God the minimum and the world our best, our priorities are wrong. I don't know you schedule, but if you have to go to bed earlier to be better prepared for Mass that is something worth looking into. Maybe there's also a Mass at a different time that could lend to you not waking up in a rush too. Something to consider.

It absolutely is not optional. We are dispensed if we are an at risk population (such as elderly, pre-existing conditions), sick or because of local restrictions we are unable to get there. The dispensation doesn't mean we can arbitrarily decide to go to Mass or watch online. Our Bishop just clarified this. Our Lord and Savior thirsts for us, and not only do we deny ourselves of communion with him when we don't go to Mass in person but we also fail to quench his thirst for us. If you truly cannot go for one of the reasons listed above, okay. If you would just rather watch Bishop Barron or Fr Mike Schmitz online because it is more entertaining and convenient then the dispensation does not apply to you. Nor is fear, when none of the situations above applies to you, work as a reason for claiming "I'm dispensed!" Fear comes from the enemy, not from God.

People receive communion even though they are not worthy to do so because of shame of being left out in the pews by themselves while the rest goes to the front. I was one of this kind of people for a long time and I was fully aware I did a serious sacrilege. In regard to what to wear, in third world countries, you cannot expect people to dress nice. The appeal of the Catholic church is that it is a universal church, rich and poor people can go together in a mass. If we set the dress code high, poor and peasant people will be left out in the church.

One thing that I've seen over the past ten years or so is that many Catholic parishioners hold hands during the Lord's prayer. When I was a kid, we never held hands. Honestly, I don't like holding hands during prayers. It's uncomfortable and very unnatural to me. I actually hope this newer practice ends with covid. We would shake hands during the sign of peace. I've always been ok with that since it's a tradition that has been around my whole life, but if it changes to just giving the "peace" sign, then I'm totally cool with that.

Clothes should be modest and not just that they cover certain parts, but that things aren't too tight. The point is to dress the best we can since we are going before Our King. Heaven opens up to us at Mass, literally. We should show our reverence for Jesus and his heavenly kingdom, which is greater than any kingdom. Padre Pio couldn't hear confessions of women who didn't have skirts 9 inches below the knee ( or that were wearing pants or even sold them to women, I think). His superior brought it up to him, but Padre Pio told him it was Jesus that wanted it to be like that. We need to be mindful of our neighbor since we don't want our dress (or behavior) to be scandalous and lead others to sin.

@@ACatholicMomsLife No, that part actually makes sense. What I mean is that bringing everyone to mass only to pack up and walk them all back out again 10 minutes later without having done anything or even heard the prayers and message feels completely pointless. And trying to attend confession sounds about the same. How are Catholic mothers who don't have someone on hand to help supposed to participate? Part of what makes "suffer them to come to me" so beautiful is knowing that mother's weren't exiled from Christ's presence due to fussy babies. God bless you and your family ma'am. The grace of the Lord is lighting up your face and is so visible 😊 I'm new (officially) in the Catholic religion and as a result I have a lot to learn. In general as a person I'm very observant, but especially for the faith part. I live in NYC and my wife and I go to the churches around (mostly Manhattan and Queens). I have to admit that sometimes during masses I get frustrated by the way the parishioners behavior, the way they get dressed (especially the women) and the way they receive the Eucharist. The lack of the discipline and the lack of the knowledge it is mind-blowing. And I'm taking about parishioners that they have been whole their life in the church... I've witnessed little kids going around with the Eucharist in their hands like a leftover cookie from a birthday party while the parents are watching them etc etc I suggest you that with the blessing and the help of God, to do a more detailed video by showing step by step and with the presence of the priest of your parish, from the moment someone enters the church for the mass until they leave in their blessed way home. As I mentioned above, there's a tremendous lack of knowledge (to my observance), and no one is trying to teach or correct these parishioners. Have a blessed day 🙏
