Great showcase of some amazing second year cards. I did a video once showcasing the percentage jumps between rookie cards and second year cards in value a while ago. It's interesting to see how significantly lower in price some player's second year cards are.

Its a great idea to buy the second year card or actually any star card that appeals to you. I have owned rookie cards including a SGC 5 Jackie for over 20 years before selling it but now have a SGC 7 1954 Topps and the first I ever bought a 1955 PSA 5 Topps. I have a 1955 complete Topps set and truthfully never liked the 1956 except the second year Roberto Clemente which I own a SGC 6. Love the 49 Bowman Jackie you showed, which may be the next card I save for that or the 1949 Satchel Paige. You got some incredible cards and am catching up on your other fantastic videos. What a collection. Your Ruth signed ball with the Chief is gorgeous. Chief Bender has always been one of my favorites also but for some reason never picked up his autograph. Anyway you have a fan.

I would say, there are definitely some really great and beautiful 2nd year cards, and in most cases have a fairly significant drop off, from their rookie card/1st year appearance. I would also, agree with what you said about the last playing day cards, players from the 1960's, 1970's, etc. For collectors who, are into player runs. It's not complete without the final bookend. Anyway those just some of my thoughts. Congrats on the success of your KZbin channel thus far. And another great video.

The new “breaker” mentality where they throw cards in the trash if they aren’t “hits” really bothers me. I still have every card I collected as a kid because they are important. For some players, the rookie is shared with another player like Nolan Ryan or Rod Carew. Going for the second year card gets you the player on his own card, which is cool. I love the second year Carew.

This was good info. One pays a premium for sure for rookie cards. I’m more of a lower grade guy, though I don’t collect these cards as targets. I’m sure one could get a nice looking 3, which would be even less expensive. Thx for sharing.

@@Vintage_Dave_T thank you for watching! I’m a mid-grade collector for the most part. Eye appeal is important. In the case of a few of those, including the Campy, you can see it is off-center. It was going for such a low price that I grabbed it. The color and surface is amazing.

Great cards!! I often thought the second year cards are better than the rookies! If you collect the autographed versions of these there is very little price difference rookie to second year....Sometimes I wish I had not gone down the autographed rabbit hole!!!

Great video Tony! You have some very beautiful, amazing cards! I found your channel through watching your interview with Graig not long ago. I’d be interested to see you do a video on your Hank Aaron cards. I started collecting baseball cards in the late 70’s as a kid. I returned to the hobby in May of this year after being away since 1990. I’m working on a Topps player run of Hank Aaron right now - I have the ‘65, ‘67, ‘69, ‘71, and ‘74 #1 so far. I’m trying to be patient with my purchases for now and find it hard to curb my new found enthusiasm for the hobby at times. Keep up the good work!

Will second the Tennessee connection... I've been in Kentucky since graduating college in 1992, but college was UT Knoxville and I grew up in upper east TN. To the topic, lots of reasons to collect 2nd year and beyond rookie cards. Sometimes the rookie card just plain ugly... thinking the 63 Pete Rose floating heads. Often the post rookie cards are just look awesome. You show several fabulous ones, including a 1960 Topps Bob Gibson. You should check out the 65, it's a stunning card, as are most of the 65 Topps St Louis Cardinals cards. Finally some just like doing player runs.

Hell yea. All cards matter. In some cases, they are nicer than the rookies. Never buy a card because it's a rookie is my general rule. Regarding jackie, I always liked 1950 on. I doubled back for the 49 Bowman as I started to gain an eye for it. Same way with the 49 Leaf. the 52 Topps-56 topps are just gorgeous and remain affordable. I have done this down the line and have built a pretty nice collection, Rookie cards be damned.

Great concept for a video, and well researched. I think with Bob Gibson, much of the value of the rookie card is due to its high number short print status, so the wide gap with the second year card is exaggerated as a result.

Fun video and great analysis. I never realized how much the 1950 Bowman Jackie with that swing follow through resembles that of the #144 Ruth. Love the full body action shots, the 1953 Topps Mays also comes to mind.

I much prefer 2nd year cards. Such a good value compared to overly-inflated Rookies. In the '60s, the Rookie example is often a "shared" card, and second-year cards like Ryan, Seaver, Carew, Bench and Perez look much better "solo". And aside from the gorgeous 1950s examples you showed, the Roberto Clemente 2nd Year card (1956) is one of the prettiest cards ever created.

Yes, my collecting journey went the same way. But even though pre-war rules the roost, there’s a real charm to some of the 1960s Topps issues. I’m a decade older and grew up with them, so they have a deep meaning to me. I know they’re somewhat plentiful and thus, no real urgency to acquire them when there are rarer/bigger fish in the sea. But since the theme of this segment was 2nd year cards, I felt they deserved a mention. Glad I found your channel and congrats on the amazing pickups (especially that gorgeous Ruth/Bender Ball). Wowser!

The reason the nolan Ryan second year card is higher percentage is because it's a high number card plus him being on the card alone. Combine the two reasons and you get a much higher percentage than most 2nd year cards.

A second year card is just a card in the collecting world. There are rookie card collectors and not many 2nd year card collectors. I think most collectors that buy second year cards are doing a player run. I prefer the 1955 Topps Aaron over the 1956, that is why I probably have two of the 1955 and none of the 1956. Beautiful cards!

1952 Mickey Mantle, perhaps the greatest baseball card in existence, is a 2nd year card. So no, 2nd year not bad at all. However, sometimes the rookie year has the better picture/design. All depends. 1989 topps griffey jr is a much more appealing card than the 1990 topps, imo.
