Been carrying spyderco serrated salts for years. For someone who sharpens well, they do everything a plain edge does better. The hawk bill serrateds are a force multiplier

Chisel ground serrated edges are no doubt the easiest serrated edges to maintain.

I think they are underrated, but I also think you shouldnt get a serrated knife if you dont actually need one. But yeah they can chew through things for a long time, the serrations protect the sharp edges up in the arches and they really grab whatever you want to cut, theres alot of positives. I think it was Murray Carter who was talking about choosing your steel/knife depending on whether you want to keep or throw away the piece you cut off. I think that applies here too, if you cut pallet straps you obviously throw away what you just cut because you just want to get to whats on the pallet, so a serrated edge might be perfect for tasks like that. If you are making sushi though, then the fish you cut off is the product you want and you probably want a more refined edge for that. It even applies within the same set of tasks sometimes. I do some gardening, and if I want to get rid of weeds or such, that Matriarch seems pretty damn perfect. If im doing replanting, pruning or grafting though, I want to do as little damage to the plant as possible and the sharper and more refined the edge, the better. Coned diamon rods are 8 bucks on amazon though, well worth picking up for serrated knives. I find the burr removal to be a bit tedious, but considering how little maintenance they really need compared to straight edges, its probably worth it for alot of people.

My absolute favorite is the Voyager Vaquero XL serrated. But I never sharpen it. Is only for self-defense.

Arguably the best SD knife available. I put a snaggletooth (wave opener) on mine. It's wicked scary, and an amazing rope/strap cutter. I had to cut a 40k lb truckers strap, and it sliced through it like butter, got 90% through it with one good swipe. Lansky makes a dedicated cold steel serrations sharpening rod for it, so it's easy to maintain fyi

Do not panic brother! I am here for the rescue! Get a thing called “pocket pen diamond sharpener” - any brand for about 10 bucks. That makes all the difference I promise! First I was also skeptical about serrated knives… You need to find the correct angle for each small bevel, but practice will make it very quick. And make sure you push the edge into the diamonds. Just do a couple of passes this one direction. Then knock the bur with 1 pass on the flat side. Actually sharpening serrations free hand is way easier compared to plain edges. For long trips I always take a serrated edge with the pen sharpener because it gives you a toothy pocket saw every time. 🪚 Amazing two knives by the way! Keep up your passion for them! 🙏

Spyderco has partially serrated blades as well, so you can get a "two in one" knife. I just ordered the black Tenacious partially serrated one, as my first Spyderco. I paid like 65€ so it's not that bad.

A Michael Christy quote that's always stuck with me is when he's talking about how so many people say that serrations have no place in the modern knife world and he says "well, I counter that with... a saw" As far as serrations, I only have a BD1N para 3 and a newer VG10 civilian. I got the para 3 just to see how well I can sharpen SE, but I use it for almost all my yardwork now. Im eventually gonna get a SE k390 p4lw though, and probably the SE Cruwear Massad Ayoob when it's released. Once the points get rounded off a bit like on your endela, I think they work a lot more like plain edge. I prefer that to the initial super pointy tips, and I think a lot more people would like SE if they tried it like that.

Not sure about other uses, but with the wavy edge serrated kitchen knives (similar to regular serrations with tips knocked down a bit to different levels, varying with brand) they are kind of an in between plain and serrated edge and give up some ability such as with hard bread crust but do slice cleaner. I have a shun one that i kind of liked but dont really use it anymore. Overall, not my favorite in the kitchen but I think I can see the appeal maybe in other uses. Mainly it seems neat to be making a clean cut with what appears to be (without closer inspection) a serrated knife. Seperately, that SE cruwear knife looks really interesting.

I love the serrated blade. I carry a victorinox multi tool at work with only a serrated blade. Serrations in general are hit and miss. Victorinox does them best. I use the Sharpmaker to sharpen serrations. Basically maintaining a micro bevel. I never touched my Esee serrations for 10 years. Required a reprofile. Semi round diamond file and sand paper put them back like they should be. Now I use the Sharpmaker to maintain it so I don’t have to do that again. Bottom line shit serrations are shit and great serrations are great. When serrations are needed they are needed. But it’s not often for me. That’s why it’s on my multitool, for when my knife can’t do the job I reach for my multitool to solve my issue.

Man I can’t wait for the ayoob. Serrated, canted, cruwear goodness. Edit: I find spyderco makes the pointiest serrations. If you slightly round the tips of the serrations, it cuts smoother in my opinion.

I don’t generally like serrated blades, but I’m seriously considering going with the SE version of the CRUWEAR Massad Ayoob, when it’s released. I see the potential benefits of serrations for the Ayoob; because it’s designed for self defense, (it’d be back up for my EDC bang bang). I have plenty of other plain edged knives to use for general cutting tasks, which I could carry along with it. 🤔

Yes I have seen cutting test on real meat even wrapped in denim. They compare it to the same model with plain edge and the difference was obvious. So the main benefit is in a defensive blade. There you also dont have to worry about resharpen it.

I have only one serrated edge knife, a gen 1 Delica. I like it, it's a great little knife. I just don't feel confident in sharpening it. I recently bought an Endela with a plain edge and I really like it . It's a perfect size for me. I just wish Spyderco would make it in the same assortment of colors as its siblings. BTW I think that knife is called the Civilian Tactical knife.

It's nice to have in conjunction with a plain edge. Get stuck in an accident and are trapped by seat belt would be better than a plain edge plus you can saw trees and such similar to a flint knife that's how I use one

serrations are interesting. I think a fully serrated knife looks cool. However I do not use them. In my opinion, and after what i tested, I think that a sharp plain edge will always be better than a serrated edge. Currently I have 5-6 serrated blades just because I wanted to learn how to sharpen serrations. As you said: Spyderco Sharpmaker(with the CBN rods) is the simplest way i have found so far. The best serrations i have found so far, imo, are on the victorinox folding kitchen knife. no sharp corners. More of a "wave edge". you should try it. Doesn't cost much nice video!

Two things: to extend the life of the blade, strop with buffing compound. Also...buy a buffing wheel for a drill and buffing compound. Just be aware of keeping the angles. These two methods will keep a razors edge with serrated blade just as stropping with a straight blade.👍🏼
