Learn to create a woodgrain texture with free-motion quilting. Not a great shot of the actual stitching but hopefully still useful

Just what I was looking for! Very useful teaching to get me going in the right direction on woodgrain! Thank you, Christina! Of note - I quilted my very first project from your “First Steps to Free-Motion Quilting” about 7 or 8 years ago. It was your “Loopy Bucket”. I call mine my “Lemon Bag” because I stamped and painted a lemon on fabric, then cut out and affixed to my bag! It turned out so cute.

@@christinacameli4860You really are one of the best teachers out there. And your drawing series is very helpful too. As you address questions from students, you are getting to the key obstacles we encounter when learning to free-motion quilt. So thank you again!

Another easy to follow video . I have just begun to learn about quilting- free motion. You make it look so easy. I like this woodgrain style. I wanted to ask if you use this pattern on a quilt would it be best to do the whole piece in this style? it appears to be very different from the other more open styles. Thanks for sharing.

Hi, you make it look so easy. Is it possible for you to show us the settings you have your machine on please, because I have trouble getting that part sorted. ?? . No one really shows us that part. Thanks Vicki.

This is a great question. I lower my feed dogs. The stitch length setting won't matter once the feed dogs are lowered and the tension will depend on how the stitches are looking on the front and back. I hope you get some time to work with this!

What are your thoughts on doing this all over a whole large quilt? I envision having to kind of work the entire length of the quilt in passes, which seems daunting, but wonder if quilting it more in chunks would work as well?

Love your channel so glad I stumbled upon it, however I have a quick question as I'm new to quilting.. With the quilt you made for your husband you said that each piece was separate, so did you quilt each part then sew them together? If yes on the other side does it have I guess the raggy quilt look for lack of better words? I just love it and would love to make one for my hubby as well!

HI Mark! How I should have worded that is that I quilted each patch of the whole quilt individually, to make it look like they are separate boards. So I didn't put it together like a rag quilt, I pieced the entire top and then when my stitching would come to the edge of a "board" in the quilt, I would stitch in the ditch up the side to finish that patch before going on to a new "board". Does that make sense? I would love to see it if you make one too!

+afewscraps I absolutely want to make it but was unsure how to go about it, would you be so kind and give the measurements of each "board" piece? And I'll for sure send a picture when I finish it. I wish I could see the back of your quilt because it's such an interesting quilt and one I haven't seen especially with the wood grain quilting..I just love it

This was all improv pieced, I just made sure all the "boards" were the same width. Here is a post that includes a shot of the back (with my gorgeous daughter : ) ) www.afewscraps.com/2014/07/concept-quilt.html
