I use mine to warm up the bed to get into it at night. I don't run it all the time. If I got cold in the night I would turn it back on again. I put a blanket on the top and bottom. I've used my several times. It usually takes about 15 mins to warm it up.

I have two of these. It is worth $20 bucks to me. I used it in my van bed between the sheet and top blanket to preheat my bed before I crawled in. I also used it in my small car while on break for cold days. Plug and toasty in no time. The van I had did not have a heater. I used the blanket to cover my lap and another on the back part of the seat to keep my back warm. I plugged one into the auto 12v and the other into a Schumacher jump pack 12v outlet.

Good morning and Happy New Year. We miss your weekly reports on all things budget traveling. Like you said at the end, the true test of this blanket will be its actual use while camping in zero degrees to 32 degree weather. I wonder if your table top test worked so well since the blanket was folded over itself, rather than unfolded and with a sheet or blanket under it with the thermometer in between? Look forward to your field test. Thanks.

I have a 12 volt blanket. Mine definitely got warm. In fact, it got too warm for me. I just use it to warm up the bed, I turn it off when I go to sleep. I turn it on when I wake up.

I had one, never used it and gave it away🤔 I should of tried it out first but I had a sleeping bag n thought it would be over kill if I was to use that too. Maybe it would of helped me. Ok Kevin, its trip time 4 u..😉👍😜

I use them to get the bed warm. Then I shut it down and have the sleeping bag insulation do its job.

The first one I got was several years ago as a Christmas gift. I threw it in the truck and didn't think much of it at the time. But then I had an elderly person with me on a 4 hour trip and she couldn't get warm unless I had the heat on full tilt lol which was miserable for me as I'm hot natured so I put this blanket on her plugged it in and within 30 mins she was asleep. Every since then I've kept one of these blankets in all of my vehicles during the Winter months in case of an emergency way before I started Van life. They aren't designed to be on for hours at a time. Turn it on warm up and turn it off until you need it. I put it on my bed and turn it on about an hour before getting into bed. Then I may leave it on for an additional 10 or 15 mins. Then I turn it off and most nights I don't need to turn it back on through the night. and when not in use I keep it either laying on my bed or rolled up and in the travel bag it came in. I've NEVER had one go out on me. I defiantly recommend these.

A folded blanket will generate more heat than a blanket opened up as designed to be used. More surface are, more heat loss.

I have slept very comfortably down to about 30°F but I did buy one of these blankets just in case. Well, last November I was camping in the mountains and it was super cold. That blanket saved me from a long miserable night. I think I had a blanket under the 12 volt one, and a blanket on top. I keep it loosely rolled in a sleeping bag sack. It would also be good on top of a sheet for just a little comfort.

Yeah, I used to use an electric blanket in the Winter and would always wake up sweating. Happy new year, Kevin!
@lissaestes70177 ай бұрын
Thanks for your videos, Kevin! I bought a 12 volt blanket about a year ago for "just in case". One night I had my usual cold night setup, but I just couldn't get warm. Finally I plugged the blanket into my power station and was toasty all night. I have also used a standard electric blanket at a campground. And once I used an extra large heating pad. I prefer just a good sleeping bag stuffed with extra fluffy blankets, and layered clothing, but once in a while a little heat feels good.

Lissa, those are some good tips for cold nights in a van. I agree the 12v blanket is nice for "just a little extra" on some of those nights. More soon...safe travels!

Off a 330 watt unit it runs 4 hours before it turns its self off to prevent burning out. After 15 minutes off it will restart. These are not MACHINE washable but you can wash it in woolite WITH THE CONNECTOR OUTSIDE OF THE WASHTUB and do NOT wring it out! Sling it over a line and let it drip dry. AVOID PUTTING COVERS OVER THE TOP DUE TO HEAVINESS OF COVERS BURNING IT OUT. PUFF BLANKETS over it over in puffy bag isEXCELLENT. The ones you uy at truck stops work better and longer than the ones from the internet. I have used both and bought them for others because they ARE SO GOOD.

Happy New Year Kevin !! It is great to see you looking good and doing well!! My primary source of heat in my minivan no build I found a twin size heated electric sheet pad you lay on top of it. It only uses about 25 watts on the low setting and it does not have an automatic shut-off so you don't have to wake up in the middle of the night cold. I plug it into my goal zero 100 amp our lead acid system. It is a complete 100% game changer for me Kevin I have used it down to 20° with my sleeping bag and blanket that's on the low setting. If you have a few minutes check out one of my very short videos I show my bed set up. And as always thank you for sharing all your tips and knowledge Kevin you have helped me out tremendously!!

I have one but haven't had the need to use it...yet. My plan is to use it to heat my bed, also, not run it all night. I have used my car heater to warm my mini van before heading to bed but mostly I just use a sleeping bag and blankets. On cold nights I layer up and also wear a hat and socks to bed.

When I had solar on my last van, I had an inverter that I plugged up my electric "throw" to that I bought from Walmart, it ran all night and kept me extremely warm.
@sheridanatwood51310 ай бұрын
The cheap oes die quickly. Spend a little more. I have found the thick plush ones burn out quicker than the thinner ones.
@petuniaromania62948 ай бұрын
You don't need high heat, just a little steady warmth and throw an extra blanket on top. My throw was electric, not 12v at all.
@BudgetTravelGuy7 ай бұрын
Petunia, I kinda agree with you as far as the 12v blanket (or anything to get some heat going), just so it's "warm" when you first crawl into the van bed. More soon...safe travels!
@karinhart48910 ай бұрын
I never thought it would do anything more than pre-heat the bed or sleeping bag so you’re warm enough to fall asleep. I rank it higher than a water bottle (no leaking!) because you can always turn it back on to reheat the bed if you wake to it being chilly.
@BudgetTravelGuy10 ай бұрын
Karin, that's a good point about being able to turn the 12v blanket back on for just a few minutes if you wake up cold. More soon...safe travels!

I prefer the 110v washable electric blankets. They use more energy because of the inverter, but I would still rather deal with that.

I think the heating source debate is largely settled. Chinese diesel heaters are cheap to buy, cheap to operate, use only a small amount of electricity and put out enough heat to keep a vehicle comfortable no matter how cold it gets outside. And the all in one, self contained models don't even require permanent installation.
@SpicyGramCracker10 ай бұрын
No no noooooo! Youre doing it all wrong! Get one that has a faux fleece lining and sleep on top of it on the lowest setting. It actually heats up the whole van! Mine has gotten me through 2 midwestern winters. Highly recommend.

I love your channel, I look forward your views. Sorry but you are wrong about an electric blanket they can be WASHED . Use a front loading washer, washers with a agitator might pull wires . I own a drycleaners and in 1966 I also made the mistake of saying electric blankets can not be washed. I was very wrong 50 yrs ago. Sorry buddy....I still think you ate a stud !

Thank you, Jose...and you are right about electric blankets being washable. That's a good tip about NOT using a machine with an agitator. More soon..safe travels!

This review has to be a joke right? Fact is if you plan with the weather and have the proper sleeping bag / gear …you dont need a heated blanket . If you’re in a rv, van are car you already have heat. If not you need another vehicle or dont go camping in cold weather. If you do think you need a heated blanket you need power to run it. That small Bluetti isnt going to have enough power to run it all night. Note if youre stupid enough to fall asleep on a heating pad it will slow cook you, that cheap blanket you show will probably do the same, think about it. With all that being said, your not a full time van lifer say it like it is. I have a heated blanket and do use it and have for a couple of seasons now. IT WORKS GREAT!!!! For what i use it for. Also it has a thermostat and yes it is washable. It cost too….not cheap… Come on budget travel guy, if you are going to do some kind of review do it right. This is misleading for sure…as some of your other reviews are………

I use it to get the bed warm, then shut it off. A whole lot easier than a hot water bottle.
