“Do they sound different?” As they are intended as scientific/reference sources they shouldn’t. And I am impressed that despite their age, they have not degraded much. A lot of the original music and sound design out of the BBC Radiophonic Laboratory was done on lab oscillators. Like Delia Derbyshire’s original performance of the Dr. Who theme was done on a test oscillator to tape and then sequenced with razorblade editing.

Tube sounds so much smoother sweeping. This is what I love about KZbin. 20 years ago this guy would've disappeared into obscurity. Maybe people passing through his hometown knew about the museum. Maybe a few more. But now hundreds of thousands of people around the world get to enjoy his passion.

The valve version crackles a bit when you turn the knob in the high frequency regions. The solid state one stays clean and doesn’t seem to distort. Some of the noises sound like the laughing dog from Duck Hunt. It’s so similar.

There's definitely a difference in sound, it's extremely subtle, the valve unit is a touch bit dirtier and crackles a bit but more specifically the octave button pops a lot louder on the the valve unit

I have a really ancient BFO here in my shed, could be WW2 or even earlier. Valves are AR15 (Army reciever 15) and ARP24 (Army receiver pentode 24). Go on you know you need another one.....Just needs 200vdc HT and 6v for the heaters.

I can hear a clear difference between the two! It doesn't have any effect on their ability to be used musically, but the transistor one has a much more piercing sound, the tube one has a really really smooth sound to it to my ears.

Found this fascinating, as I am a Big Fan of Valve Kit. My Hi-Fi system is valve driven from the Record Deck to the Speakers, via World Designs Phono3 and PSU3, to a World Audio Design KLP1 Pre-amp, which drives a World Audio Design K5881 Mk2 Valve Amplifier. Originally, these drove a pair of Quad ESL 57 Speakers, but now drive more convenient KEF speakers. I also have an Akai M8 Valve driven Reel-to-Reel tape recorder. I gave up on Transistors back in the 1970's. The only Transistor kit I have these days, are a CD player and a Cassette Player/Recorder.

5:13 - Definitely some EDM vibes (Bass 305? Daft Punk? Can't quite place it), but that sweep with the 1kHz tone interrupting seems to be commonly sampled and reused!

Cool stuff. Would be amazing to have a spectrum analyzer hooked up to this so you can really see what the knobs do in terms of frequency. It especially makes modulation quite intuitive. Just try it out for yourself with something like Spectroid (for Android phones) when playing the part of this video when he's messing with one oscillator to modulate the other.

How difficult would it be to turn one of those BFO's into a theremin? Are you gonna let people play with those things as a hands-on interactive display?

In the traditional sense of the Theremin, the two heterodyning inputs need to be ultrasonic so that only the beat frequency is in the AF range. In the other variation, a variable capacitance from your hand in the picofarad range passes near the antenna of a tuned LC circuit mixed with that of a fixed tuned circuit is amplified and the resulting variable voltage output can be used as the control voltage for a VCO like the equipment shown (front jack).

Been watching both you and Hainbach playing with these.... B+J devices , I particularly enjoy once you got them all hooked up as a studio of test gear. I too, am interested in the external modulation and haven't seen either of you try what immediately struck me ( probably because I have also been watching Aaron Lanterman go deep on the DKI synergy) but have you tried using one device to modulate another...hypothetically you should be able to setup algorithms of the devices similar to the FM algorithms of the Synergy and Dx7 , and create some really banging FM sounds that you can then sequence.

You can. Next vid is on modulation as there is a mod required. I'm not the biggest fan of fm sounds like that and you'd need external vca's to make it do that but it's certainly possible! I'm making modules to make this work in the coming week.

They sound quite distinct to my ear. Sounds like less noise on the valve signal, I hear less HF even at lower freqs. Might be as simple as some HF rolloff, but its there at all freqs.

Hey Sam, I have a type 1017 and a 1013…both with the remote jacks on the front… going to try and control the modulation from an SQ-1 sequencer… would like to solder a jack to the modulation pin on the front…. Not sure which wires go where? Ie which wire do I solder to the pin and where to solder the other? ( using an audio lead) thanks Greg 😊

Vacuum tube version makes some "static" clicks, when you are pushing button. Probably there is some HV on button contacts. This is the only difference I've noticed.

Another idea, if you wanted a pseudo-trigger/volume control you could add a vactrol to control the output volume. Pretty simple but effective, plus also at audio-rates you may get some weird stuff too.

Sam! That beige JVC KM-2000 video switcher unit you have in your video case, what's the polarity on the power cable for the main unit? I don't have the power cable for mine and the power socket is bashed in. It sounds like there wasn't a standard early on and I don't want to fry mine. Thanks!
