I’ve had phase cancellation explained to me before. But seeing the visual representation with the sine wave and explaining the math was so helpful! Thanks Joe!

Joe, you have been so right from the very beginning. I have had a nightmareload of bass recording and all it takes about equalizing and compressing and shoot! GIRATS IS the way to go, man. I cannot possibly thank you enough in this life. Thanks, buddy. The clearest audio mixing advisor/educator in the whole wide-world of the Internet.

I had this issue recently afer using Logic Pro's "Drum Replacement/Doubling" for a Kick track. The Kick samples on the track it created were out of phase with the original Kick (which I was keeping). Lesson: just 'coz it's an electronic instrument doesn't mean it can't be out of phase with something else in the mix.

This is crazy timing because literally just yesterday I was in a local pro studio having a mix done on one of my songs; the head engineer was explaining drum polarity/phase to me and I was like “Oh man, I need to learn more about this exact thing!” Perfect timing!

Great explanation. I think I would flip the FAT mic as well. It sounded thicker to me.

Q just out of curiosity: What would have happened to the Sine Curve(s), if you would have moved one of them to a little offset? I mean moving one curve for some milliseconds to the left or right? Not cancelling out by 100%, just 15 or 20%. Does it then start "wobbling" or "flanging" due to permanent volume changes per millisecond?

YMMV

Very good question, I’ve been wondering myself. Could a slight offset and added effect be an option for “thicker”, more pronounced vocals?
@Kunibert_Knatter21 күн бұрын
@@markedgerley6077 Well, we have to consider that a vocal track is not comparable with a sine curve. We probably need to test it, but have to expect something unpredictable. Maybe this would turn Celine Dions angelic voice into the squeaking sound of a murder of crows. We need more tests!

Have you ever time aligned the kick to the overheads? Or the close mixed snare?

I don't think my DAW actually uses phase
@Hocus_Tokus21 күн бұрын
It seems very unlikely ! What's your DAW ? If it doesn't manage phase, I'm sure you can easily find (free) phase plugins or channel strip plugins with phase or polarity switch. Last, you should able revert the items waveform, which is like shifting phase (but far less convenient than a guenuine phase button in your DAW).
