You know what would have been cool? If Bethesda had put the character creator online for pre-order customers to be able to create before the games release and then you could download it when you get the game. That way you could start playing right away. Would have been a great pre-order carrot.

I've got five completely different characters mostly set up. I do this mainly for immersion, but it also forces me to play the game completely differently and explore different parts of the game and different quest lines (assuming I role play). My five characters currently have the following trait groups: Julia Smith: alien DNA / Spaced / Serpent's Embrace. This forces her to keep moving. Sultain Mahire: Empath / Neon Street Rat / Extrovert. This will help in business and pirating. Etienne Travial: Introvert / Enlightened / ??. This is my main quest character, the introvert will hurt this but that makes the game more fun. Jim Brown: Hero Worshipped / Kid Stuff / Raised Universal. This is my melee combat guy with a background. Jane Sylvan: Terra Firma / Dream Home / United Colonies Native. This character wants to stay put and develop relationships, manage outposts and trade routes, and make money. I'm interested to see how the "stay at home and build" desire works with the "run around and do stuff" motif of the rest of the game.

I wonder if you have combat medic as your background (boost in healing items effectiveness) and alien dna (decreased healing items effectiveness) will just cancel each other out allowing you to have a decent amount of a health increase starting out

Probably gonna go with either the Diplomat background. Persuasion is my jam. I think I’ll also grab the traits for Introvert, Neon City Street Rat, and Alien DNA. I plan to roleplay as an orphan street punk from Neon who got themself out of trouble mostly with their silver tongue, and eventually became a Diplomat to use those skills. Maybe their past in Neon came back to bite them and that’s why I end up finding the random alien artifact via mining because my name was slandered from past mistakes.

Name: Sonya Reed Background: Cybernetisist Traits: Wanted, Neon street rat, Serpents embrace She grew up in neon. After a failed cybernetic experiment and because they already disliked her for her belives in the serpent they put a bounty on her head. She had to leave neon and signed on with Argos extractors to earn some money. Her true goal is to find the crimson fleet and become a spacepirat. Maybe she can even find a way to become a cyborg and replace some limbs on her body. She is not only addicted to grav jumps but all drugs. Whenever she finds any drug she has to take it. She is a junky. She is something of a mad scientist and psychopath. In combat she likes to use laser weapons, heavy weapons and explosives. Her most favourite way to kill is with fire. Some people just want to see the universe burn.

For my first playthrough, I've decided to resurrect my old SWG character Basic premise is a Space Trucker, so Long Hauler or possibly Smuggler, if that's on the list. She was also a Master of Teras Kasi, the Star Wars martial art. Ordinarily, this would be a non-starter in a Bethesda game because Unarmed Combat is usually tacked on as "you can do this but...". Starfield, however, has at least four skills feeding into Unarmed, and those Neurostrikes look especially intriguing, so I reckon I'll give it a go. If nothing else, I can always fall back on Stealth Sniper like I usually do :P So for primary skill trees, I'm thinking Physical for my ground combat and resistances (also Stealth and Concealment; good for Smuggling) and Tech for ship combat and Starship Design. Social is secondary for Persuasion and Bargaining options, Science tertiary for scanning and hacking, and Combat last, mostly for Armour skills For Traits, I'm pretty solid on Alien DNA and Wanted. The third is fairly flexible, but I'm leaning towards Serpent's Embrace... which I'm not as enthusiastic about as I was before being introduced to House Va'ruun

Combat Medic does look like the Background I’m going with. I like the skills it comes with. Irl I have an affinity to pistols and mostly revolvers, so I’m going to try to build that stat up. I want the medicine one because a skill I’m going to try out later is Alien DNA and I want to see if that and this cancel out the nerf to buff they each get with medical items. And Wellness seems like a good starting skill. I think I read somewhere it increases the weight you can carry which is nice for collecting miscellaneous items. I’m not too set on any other the other skills yet. Im thinking Introvert and Wanted to spice things up, but I might feel differently about both of those later.

in regards to level cap, or soft cap, we see a level 80 creature in one of the gameplay demonstrations, which indicates that the average endgame level will be much higher than in previous games. there are also less skills than in fallout 4 so we can assume that characters will be far more capable in starfield, without needing to make a hyper focused character that can only use one type of weapon for the whole playthrough.

By my count there are 82 skills. If you need a skill point for each rank in each skill, to completely max out your character that puts max level at 328

@@Wazowskii16 i didnt mean to max out a character. in fallout 4 your character sort of soft caps at around level 50 when levelling up becomes stagnant, meaning most builds were targeted at around level 50. if we assume that starfield soft cap is around 80, it would mean we can make more versatile characters without needing to grind xp to get to insane levels

It seems like the economy grind got a lot steaper than they anticipated. Parents only get 2% and 50k gets us a dream home VS a shack. If you take either of these, you might consider a trait that brings in some loot, like Wanted. Or maybe commerce.

Over the lifetime of this game, I will make so many characters that I will easily try out almost everything. I'm sure that future DLC will add one or more backgrounds or traits. I have two character ideas right now. I'm waiting until I can hit that New Game button before deciding on the specifics.

I’m already torn and at the 💩 end of the stick, because diplomat and cyberneticist are separate and the traits corresponding to both aren’t what I’d readily pick! So unless there’s some way of being what you choose regardless of developer’s choice for you, I’ll never be able to make the character I want which is a cyberneticist diplomat! I’ve no interest in being a criminal of any sort, I favor negotiating and working things out but if it comes down to it I prefer CQC domination!
