I used crt my entire life then I jumped to lg oled tvs in like 2014 now I use a sony ag9 soon a90j and I adore the experience but I didn't know the text artifacting was common I just assumed it's a res issue

yeah, i thought for the longest time too till i got a 4k LG hand down in 2016, and used as a monitor. Turns out it was a HDMI bandwidth issue. If i wanted accurate colors, i just had to bring it back to 30fps. Then I also discovered my pioneer plasma tv had a PC mode. All the modern cast devices look better now.

A90j is a waste of money. Purchase the 77 inch a80j for the best bargain. The a90j actually provides too much peak brightness in some instances; causing detail to be lost in HDR content.

I use a CRT with a resolution of 1200x1600 and 50Hz in more cinematic games and 1024x786 at 85Hz in more speedy games. Works just fine, you just got to make sure that the gpu is outputting the video signal at the right vga frequency. It has basically no input lag and I got it for free, so I'm pretty pleased with it.

2:36 In regards to using a traditional pc + monitor setup, be sure to set the Output Dynamic Range option from Limited to Full in that same menu (you'll have to do this for each monitor by clicking the icons at the top of this page). A lot of monitors seem to default to Limited which results in washed out colors, but setting it to Full fixes this issue (also keep in mind you'll have to do this every time you update your drivers if you do a clean install)

Number one thing to remember when plugging a pc into most tvs is to use the hdmi port marked (arc). Yes I am aware that it should only effect sound. However this port seems to have more bandwidth and if you are having trouble getting hdr to work in windows try the (arc) hdmi port.

I've been using TVs for my work PC since I started having eye strain issues sitting too close to a typical desktop monitor. My first PC TV was a 32" LED TV that my family upgraded from. I started sitting about a 1.5meters away from then on. I eventually upgraded to a 42/44" (can't remember exact size) that my family also upgraded from that used to be the main living room TV. I then moved a bit further back. It was 2 years ago that I finally bought (instead of a "hand me down") my first main TV PC Setup which is a 55" while still retaining the same viewing/working distance. Main reason for the upgrade was color accuracy and the fringing you mentioned. I "lived" with it on the 42/44" TV for a few years until I upgraded my main work PC and was outputting around 1440p now. I used to only output to 1080p/1080i only. And no matter what I did to the settings, the old reliable 42/44" just wasn't able to correct. My work setup is now a 55" main TV monitor with a 2nd 32" inch TV hanging above it as a secondary extended display output. 32" is mainly for playing KZbin, Spotify Web Player or Netflix while I work. No issues with fringing on either.

I didn't have subs turned on for 2 years when I bought my 5.2 Yamaha sound system, didn't know they had their own power buttons. Didn't know for 7 years in sonic 3 in the casino map you only had to push up or down to make the red spinny thing go up and down, I legit spent years trying to jump up and down to make it go low enough and didn't find out until it was emulated on PC and seen sonic snowboarding for the first-time blew my mind. It's similar I guess to me going into new workplaces and finding people not having drivers installed on their laptops so external displays don't work properly or sound doesn't go through or yeah screen mode isn't set to full it's set to like 16:9 or auto when their screens don't run at 16:9, had a few old projectors freeze up trying to display higher resolutions than it can support and people didn't know they could just extend instead of duplicate for perfect picture quality and allows them to do work while showing a video to the class etc. People and some tech is just frustrating lol

@@rikumajumder1558 It's not like it used to be, a lot of TV's today have input lag imperceptible from gaming monitors of the same refresh rate(I've measured and compared myself with a high speed camera). Unless you need more than 120hz then the newer LG OLED's(C8 and newer) for example work excellent for FPS games, they also have near instantaneous response times, crazy good colors, blacks and HDR which you simply can't get out of a backlit panel

I bought a 55" 4k tried to use it as monitor, but that really doesn't work. Colors and resolution are not good enough. IMO Maximum for a 4k resolution is 42" , above that it should be 5k. I do have 2x 42" monitors on my work desk.

I use a Samsung 55 inch curved 4k 4:4:4 etc. TV. I have not been gaming lately, but when I do, there is a setting on the TV for gaming that eliminates most of the processing to improve the response. Text is sharp and clean. My viewing distance is 24 inches, if I lean in, I can start to see the pixels at about 11 inches. If I watch a movie or TV show, I roll back to around 3 1/2 to 4 feet.

Very good video. I've been using 2 TVs as monitors for a long time, ~15 years. 42" 1080p seems my ideal with old eyes for both work & play. I don't play multiplayer, TVs work great for single player action like latest Far Cry etc-can't beat those panoramic vistas, or larger heads to aim at :)

Since my day job is web development, I've been using a 43" 4K monitor for several years now. It removes the need for multiple HDMI outputs for multi-monitor work since it's the equivalent of 4 1080p monitors. Any relatively decent laptop can output 4K these days. It's also a lot cheaper than 4 individual monitors. And I can size things however I want them.

When it comes to the image edge being outside of the screen, you can often fix this by changing the input type to "PC", "Computer" or "Game". Every TV is different, but usually you will go to either the source option or the input settings. Find the input channel you are trying to use such as "HDMI 1" and there is probably an option to change the input type. It's the first thing I look for as it seems to address multiple issues relating to the colour and sharpness, but the most noticeable fix is that the image matches the screen size without having to resize anything manually or change the aspect ratio.

I've been using the LG CX as a monitor for a few months now and it has been utterly amazing. To make sure I don't sit too close, the TV is mounted on a stand a few inches away from my desk which is pretty deep to begin with. I haven't had any problems with posture or eye strain.

Been using a TV as my PC's monitor since 2010. First on a 46 inch 1080P display, then upgraded to a 65 inch 4K display in 2016, and finally a 75 inch 4K display in 2020. Using the calculator I already sit right around the sweet spot, which is a metre and a half away from the display! I also use game mode and RGB out with full range. And my TV supports HDR so I use KMPlayer with madVR to play movies automatically at the correct refresh rate and pass HDR signal to the display. Before I had an LCD TV, I would hook up my CRT TV to my PC as an external monitor to watch movies and TV shows on using Windows Media Center.

I've been gaming at 1440p @ 120 hz on my 55" Samsung Q70 which only cost about $800 a year ago, and it's a pretty fantastic experience. The main problem was really that the experience was not great out of the box because the TV was not developed with use as a PC monitor as the primary focus. But if you're willing to research and calibrate a bit, plenty of modern TV's are excellent PC monitors. That's especially true if cost is an issue and your other option is spending $2000+ almost purely to save the time of a bit of calibration. Just remember that a PC monitor is going to prevent you from streaming at 4K HDR from most services because of HDCP issues, so when you're using your TV for that purpose, use the built-in apps for things like Netflix and Amazon if your goal is the best picture quality available. On that note, you're going to have this same problem if you DO spend $2000 on a high end large gaming monitor......and those aren't going to necessarily have built-in streaming apps to avoid the issue like any modern smart TV does.

I've been using a samsung led tv for my couch computer set up for the last few years. NU8000, the 55 inch or bigger versions will run in 1440p 120hz which is all I could ever ask for and I've experienced zero burn in unlike my old plasma. Text is readable, no weird scaling issues, very pleased

Not sure if anyone has already mentioned it, but you forgot one important setting. Find "sharpness" in the TV's picture settings and set it to neutral. Some TVs have this at 0, some have it in the middle. If the picture gets blurry, you're too low. Voila, those pesky halos around text and other small details are gone and you get less eyestrain! :)

I've been using a big screen TV since 2011 as my main monitors. I'm working from a sofa and don't need a desk anymore. It's way better than the cramped posture you assume with your body, as well as being easier on the eyes since they don't have to focus on an object that is so small and so close as they would have while viewing a regular monitor.

I have my base M1 Mac Mini connected to my Vizio E60 E3 using an HDMI 2.1 Cable. The TV is in my 8' x 10' bedroom (Shared accommodations) and it sits on a dresser at the foot of my bed. The TV is set to computer mode withBlack detail set to high Active Full Array is on, Clear action off, I nave Signal Noise set to high, Reduce Block Noise Currently set to low (still experimenting with this setting), Game Low Latency off, Film Mode off, and Gamma set at 2.4 . I'm really enjoying this setup so far. I plan on upgrading to an OLED TV soon.

I'm using our ols 32" flatty as a monitor. Used a VGA to HDMI cable because that's what I had. It worked, but it was fuzzy and the res was a bit off. Ordered a DisplayPort to HDMI cable and now it looks better than when it was just a TV.

I've been using a 4k 55" tv 30" from my face for years now. It's the same thing as 4 27" 1080p screens tiled but with no borders and one mount. You learn to look at quadrants so your eyes aren't overwhelmed.

Usually those had a little input lag anyways because of the HDMI to RGB circuitry needed. Still nice as long as its not the horrible widescreen ones which were super smudgy in the edges.

@@catorb6607 there may be some very expensive high quality converters that could do it well, although yeah, I would say you would want an anolog output card to get the best experience. Would be nice if Nvidia made an optional VGA connection on their cards (like on the gt710)

@@skeledog1942 I miss upscaled emulation that actually looks good. I can't think of a way to explain why crts look better to play games. It looks pretty awful compared to a decent LCD for displaying small text, but playing a game and it feels like it adds so much depth to the image. Also, the scaling benefits that make some of my favorite games from like 99-05 look not terrible. Just another reason to hate GPU shortage

First time when I tried to plug my laptop into my tv in order to play assassin creed black flag went horrible. Cropped display, no audio, weird artefacts and random disconnects. The second time I managed to fix the last 3 problems but took me some time to do so. After watching this video I know how to fix the cropped display problem now. Thanks!

I did a 2 year stretch with a 55" 4K TV on a big kitchen table acting as a desk. So I could set the TV further back than a regular desk would allow. Now to cut a long story short I now use a monitor and I love my monitor. Playing racing games and some arcade games was amazing on a TV in front of your face but many more games were just awkward. Often the corners were too far away to see readouts and read text. Now I have a very curved monitor and I really appreciate the edges being close thanks to the curve. I think for me at least a 34" ultrawide is about as good as it gets, curved of course. You can have 4K zoomed in a bit with windows so text isn't so tiny. It works great, but I feel I'm at the limit of where I'm just moving my eyes. It might not seem like moving your head a little is a big deal but once you've moved it 1000 times, you'll see how old and even painful it can get.

I have a 7+ year 32" Acer Monitor/TV that was my primary display for quite a few years. It is really a monitor first and has a tuner built in. 1080p and it still gives great picture, I wish I could find a modern equivalent of it. It is still used as a bedroom TV to this day.

I have been using TVs happily as gaming monitors for years. They are important as I do a lot of work on them too and the extra real-estate is appreciated. My newest TV/Monitor runs at A TRUE 120hz 1440. Which honestly my GPU has difficulties keeping up with.

I've been gaming on TV's for over a decade, granted I'm not doing super high refresh rate stuff or competitive online stuff, but I've never run into any issues with lag or color. I can only assume I've just gotten lucky with the two TVs I've used for it in that time as not having any of the bizarre features that would interfere. I started doing this because I've got an injured back and I can't sit in an upright chair at a desk without pain so having a reclining chair I can sit back at a distance has been a godsend.

Coincidentally watching this on an older Vizio television (Model E320-B0) my PC is hooked up to. Even though I recently had to replace its LED backlighting strips after they burnt out, I haven't really had any image problems with it. I don't run games above 1080p 60FPS, I sit about 4ft away from the screen at maximum. It has some image settings for computer use and a low latency gaming mode. Chroma subsampling test I just did seems to show that it's displaying colors correcting with minimal to no fringe.

I use a 43” 4K display on my desk, it’s amazing for juggling applications and looks great when I play easier to run games. And of course watching movies and shows are way better. First two days I had awful eye strain and headaches but it went away

I'm still using a 10 year old Toshiba 24SL410U here. I've also previously had a triple-ultrawide setup, and a BenQ 144hz "gaming" display, the TV works fine for small spaces.

My living room is on the larger end of small so I have my desk crammed in a corner and I run a 20ft hdmi cable to my TV. It's nice having the choice between a pc experience and a "console" experience. Sure it takes little bit of extra work fiddling with a few settings to get games up and running but I've got it down to the point where the most cumbersome thing I have to do is reset my Bluetooth driver that has suddenly decided to start crashing on me a week ago, but that's the cost I pay to hook my computer audio up to my stereo system

I have a Samsung NU8000 and use M&KB from my sofa. Works great I run older single-player games in 4k 60hz and newer ones 1440p 120hz. The next TV that I buy will be a 4k 120hz panel for sure.

I have been using a 55nano866 from LG (4k/120hz/HDR) as monitor with a 6900xt RedDevil and is great for youtube, movies, 4K gaming. So far it been a great experience!

I love VGA CRTs. I have a few, so far the AOC I have is my favorite, but it was in a fire and idk if it works now :( GBS Control or an OSSC allows for consoles on VGA CRTs, check them out! (The GBS is a DIY much cheaper scaler, to help with horizontal sync and resolution, the latter quite popular)

I have been using a 32 inch 1080p TV for a display for about 10 years and I have no complaints. I do not play AAA titles but mostly MMORPG's, so my need you a high end monitor is nonexistent.

I have a cheap 42 inch TV as 4K monitor hooked up to my lenovo mini PC. Works without any issues, all enhancements turned off and verified(engineer here). Not color accurate as my calibrated Dell screen but it has wide color gamut, and overall everything looks great on it. My photos looks dope on 4K screen. And you can argue that you need 60 megapixel for photos, until you see 12 megapixel photos from a 5D classic on 4K TV. It's just flawless and can't tell apart from my 20 megapixel 6D or my 24 megapixel M50. The TV+PC is also used for retro gaming

For the longest time, I wasn't able to use my laptop with HDMI on my TV. So I used VGA. With your tips about the compression and settings. I tried it out and got it working. Thank you for fixing issues I had didn't even know could be fixed!

I literally have been using THAT TV (Vizio P65-F1) for a couple years now as my monitor @1080p/120Hz. It's a great TV for gaming as well as 4K/HDR content.

Been using TV as my only monitor for 5 years. Had 49'' now 65''. Wireless kb/m for work and browing. Wireless controller for gaming. Desk on wheels and sofa bed on wheels, make it office time in the day, game time in the night.

Been using the 48inch oled cx for awhile now wall mounted about 48 inches from my face behind a desk of 40-inch depth. It's working quite well and I'm very happy with it, happier than I've been with any previous monitor or television experience. Would recommend it but your desk needs depth. I see the reviewers all setting it up way too close. 40-inch depth would be minimum reasonable imo. I use 150-175% scaling in windows.

1:11 to 1:17 And Wendell called it ( as an opinion that is) years ago with any UHD rez monitor ( as far as NOT needing to adjust dpi scaling/setting to increase size of text and other items) being about 40 inches to be the perfect size with 32 inches pushing the border line for about too small.

Been using a TVL UHD tv as my PC monitor for a couple of years now. I have very little space so there can only be one screen for all my display needs. TV, game consoles, PC, etc all must use the same screen. Also since I don’t have space for a desk either so a TV was the only choice. So far I haven’t been disappointed with my TV as a monitor. The only thing I don’t like is that a lot of pc gaming peripherals seems to need a desk in order to be able to use them properly. I would like to have stuff like steering wheels, HOTAS and stuff like that but without a desk it isn’t happening.

I know it is not as "accurate," but I like how LCD TVs tend to display colours versus LCD monitors. I can usually make some tweaks to get monitors to where I want them, but with TVs I find the colour settings are good either out of the box or with a quick preset change.

2 years back brought down my crt samsung monitor down from the attic and hooked it to my laptop with vga and boy, the 85hz switch from 60hz was a *chef's kiss.

Been doing this since like 2003 and on every kind of TV almost , big CRTs, Rear Projection and LCD. Never had an issue, have always just used software to dial everything in.

I've got a plasma from 2012. I use it in the living room for controller gaming on steam and youtube and movies and what not. Still looks amazing. I want a new OLED but can't justify it because there is nothing wrong with the plasma. Damn high quality product!

Switch to 4k TV as a monitor 4 years ago, the first one was 43 inch, a second 58 inch Philips TV. The Last one is the biggest size comfortable on a desk. Reason to upgrade problem with input ports with the first TV. Both were specials on discount, hope for 8k TV as of next monitor when upgrading this pc internals within 3-4 years. Size 55 inch but it will be interesting 58 inches might be interested as well

Vizio used to be my "go to" for budget tech, nice to see that lately they've stepped up their game and have been producing quality products.
