This is a handy tip. Removal is the best option, hands down. If you are a purist and you want to keep them, your best bet is to remove them, fully clean underneath and on the sealing surfaces, fully clean the strips out themselves and then Fisholene coat the surfaces before replacing the strips. You may want to use a sealer to hold them back in place depending on the age of them. Even if you do this and you do Fisholene the surfaces underneath, you should probably do this at least every 12 months if you want to be sure to keep the rust at bay, a right pain in the rear, (pun intended). You may even need to do it more often if driving regularly on salted roads. It will buy you 'a little' extra time and may hold the rust monster back a while, but if you want to avoid the rust altogether, I'd remove the things and be done with them as Jordan suggested, they are a pest.

They are there to prevent getting rock chips being kicked up into the paint by the tire there, if you remove them then you're at sqaure one still and they'll rust out when rock chips chip the paint, subaru out them there for a reason, just clean them out every season and spray some fluid film and you'll be fine. don't throw them away and leave the metal exposed

@@growingup4487 That is their true purpose yes, but I've found in all of our Suabrus that the things ensure the cure is worse than the disease. We do a considerable amount of offroading with our Subies and stones flicking up there is a constant, yet even after years we haven't had too many issues with rust in the wheelguards, though, as mentioned previously, we do fisholene coat the inner wheel guards. Another problem with the plastic surrounds is that in situations involving heavy mud or sand work, they can come loose and become lodged in between the wheel and the tyrewell causing an infuriating obstruction. But its like anything, personal choice and what works best for everybody. to each their own :)

Exact same problem with older Hondas. When we were living in Colorado someone hit the door of our 87 CRX Si in a parking lot. (Fortunately, an employee saw it happen and guilted them into not leaving.) When we took it into the body shop for an estimate, the first thing the tech did was walk over to it and rip out the plastic strips on the rear wheel arches. He said, "That's why every Honda in Colorado has rusted out rear quarter panels. Just move here?" We had. Never had any problems with the salt. Thanks body shop dude!

Also the door seals! The door seals on my 2018 are the style that cause the bottom of the door to rust out! I took the door seals off my 2018 Forester to keep the door from rusting out

@@ALNSMOVERLAND It's not rusting yet because I took them off immediatel, but I've had other vehicles with that type of door seal. USually after 5 or 6 years you have no bottom of the door.

Keeping it ( mostly) rust free is important, so thanks! However, the tires will throw around debris and stones. Will that not strip the paint off and then cause rust as well? On advantage is that without the strip you can spot rust earlier, but periodically checking would still be my preferred option?
@ALNSMOVERLAND3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's was the purpose of those rubber things. But you will have less chance to get rust without (even with stone/debris strip) than with!

It sucks my 1999 Impreza has zero rust except there. Cars don’t really rust here in Georgia (US). Tomorrow I need to see if mine still has that rubber strip. My first 1999 Impreza did but it was almost brand new

Hey thanks for sharing. Once you point out the issue it makes sense that rust could develop there. I think your English has improved because of your channel, unfortunately my French hasn't.

they don't rust from the outside. The rear arch lip rusts from the inside out . Worst areas on rear is the strut top area and the support rib in the wheel tub directly behind the strut . sill end closure around the seatbelt bolt mount can get bad too .

You can try to stop the rust with a dedicated product or remove the rust by cutting and replacing with good metal
@idi0tdetectioninprogress3 жыл бұрын
Mine still has them😁. Got to keep things super clean and dry👍. The other issue is people pull at them, instead of removing carefullly by pushing them off the arch. This leaves them misshaped and thats the end of them being any use.
