Suffering is part of the human condition. We create our own stories and believe them, however painful and untrue they may be. But it doesn’t have to be this way! We can find freedom from emotional, mental, and physical pain when we take the time to be quiet and ask some simple yet life-changing questions. I studied Buddhism for a long time and have always been interested in self-exploration. My guest on today’s episode, Byron Katie, has created a powerful shortcut for unpacking and slowing down the mental processes that cause suffering, and her work has been one of my greatest tools for personal inquisition and growth.
In 1986, at the bottom of a ten-year spiral into depression and self-loathing, Byron Katie woke up one morning in a state of joy. She realized that when she believed her stressful thoughts, she suffered, but that when she questioned them, she didn’t suffer, and that this is true for every human being. Her simple yet powerful process of self-inquiry, which she calls The Work, consists of four questions and the turnaround, which is a way of experiencing the opposite of what you believe.
Byron has been bringing The Work to millions of people for more than thirty years. Her public events, weekend workshops, intensives, and nine-day School for The Work have brought freedom to people all over the world. Her books include the bestselling Loving What Is, I Need Your Love-Is That True?, A Thousand Names for Joy, and A Mind at Home with Itself. You can visit thework.com for more about Byron and to access the resources we talk about in this episode.

Byron Katie's Work saved me from the darkest chapter of my life after the break up of my daughters mother. I lost it. I was violent, out of control, stalking and self harming, almost to death. After a few weeks of reading her material watching her videos and doing the work, I was free. The truth set me free and I found it inside myself, so quickly and powerfully. This was after 20yrs of self help junkie. This was back in 2009. I doubt i will ever find anything as simple as powerful in creating real lifelong shifts than The Work by Byron Katie. I've never been in a toxic relationship since - romantic or otherwise. POWERFUL stuff.

Wonderful interview Mark! I love Byron Katie's The Work. It helped me make peace with growing up with a severely mentally ill mother. If it weren't for her, I don't think I would have found the place of unconditional love and forgiveness--best feelings ever! I appreciate this reminder to apply The Work in my marriage. Perfect timing! Hugs to you 🤗 I so appreciate all your wisdom and thoroughly enjoy every interview you do.

valuable stuff that really gets into the soul of the person, the past, the history, the fabrications of the mind as they say in Buddhism. It gets into the environment and the context of all of it and helps save oneself from the self defeating patterns by allowing one to see the patterns from a new perspective. that is liberation.

This is very true. We can FEEL happy even when we are not, we can FEEL successful even when we are not, we can FEEL rich even when we are not, we just have to THINK so. After all, happiness, richness, and success are mere FEELINGS, and what matters most is the feeling and not the thing itself. We can even control the world by controling our mind.

I have that problem & fear too “ Not feeling at home after living in so many countries & having family & friends everywhere, but not near me! ! Yes, i can visit these people, but I haven’t a tight community near me. It becomes more painful as i get older & have a spouse who doesn’t feel at all the same way. Bits & pieces of Me are gained & lost in the craziness of my own doing! I’m longing for deep honest connections! This topic hits home. !

The world isn’t a friendly universe though, it was that naive thinking that got me betrayed time and time again believing that if I gave people enough chances and showed my own vulnerability and shared my deepest insecurities while encouraging them and give more they would take note and reciprocate. Believing the world is a friendly place is the illusion for some. Wake up from that illusion and be better equipped to survive and ward off the predators. That intentionally in still self doubt and have u thinking ur crazy for calling them out on what their actually doing. Some people are bad full stop. It was my belief that they weren’t that got me used and abused. The world is not a friendly place at all. Especially at this time in existence. From my personal experiences.

I love Katie. However there's a part I still don't get when it comes to physical pain. At 47:42 she says "all physical pain is anticipated or remembered". Well if I put my hand on a hot stove, at that very moment it hurts no matter what I think. My nervous system reacts with acute pain. There's nothing wrong with it but I'm not anticipating or remembering. I just feel it in the moment. I'd appreciate if anyone could shed some light over this one. Thanks! ♥

@@bronsonmcnulty1110 Thanks for sharing. I think she's referring to the "remembering or anticipating" of the mind. The more I think of it, she might be saying that a mind that is free from stories of the past and the future, will simply notice the state of the body - without labelling it as pain - and recognize it as a state that may need to be taken care of.

They all say the say thing because it's the truth. No one has a monopoly on the truth. Byron Katie reaches an audience those teachers don't reach, so her work has great value. You can choose to only believe in Western science, and that is your choice, but it's just a perspective. DIfferent teachers resonate with different students and each has something to offer.
