Wonderful advice, and great examples from the master himself :D This is one of those things that we kinda know intuitively but only after hearing it laid out like this we truly become able to consciously harness it. Thank you for the advice!

Too true! I hope everyone learns to harness the concept and use it for fun :)

I love this. I love making characters based on real subtle character flaws taken to an extreme. Everyone can relate and knows someone like that so it becomes really funny. It's kind of how I'd guess the characters in The Office were made.

100%! Michael Scott is a great example of taking the idea of how everyone tends to dislike their manager and making him hyper-focused on being liked but being bad at it. It can be difficult to balance the two, and season one was probably on the wrong track, but they definitely course-corrected the character to play up the comedic juxtaposition without making him an unlikable character. Plenty of good examples in The Office while still being anchored and relatable.

the difference between American and English comedy is that in America the characters make the jokes and in England the characters are the joke. I think something similar applies here

That's a cool observation. I definitely prefer the latter. Thanks, England!

I feel like I've best managed this in my own campaign with proprietors of the local magic shop/bakery: Bogdan and Bart's. It's run by a retired, high-level Dwarven Wizard and his hyper-intelligent Pig familiar. The Bogdan's side of the shop covers magical goods and services, while Bart's side runs the bakery. Anyone following the theme of the video, will recognize that the hyper-intelligent Pig is Bogdan, the one running the magic shop, delving into in-depth magical research, and intent on being taken very seriously. While the 16th level Dwarven Wizard is Bart, and is the toddering older fellow that runs the bakery in his cute aprons who is constantly trying to offer people free samples. Yahgra also stands out as a recurring character that the PCs like and who has a strong personality. She's the Lawful Evil Hobgoblin mercenary, that ruthlessly and effectively works on behalf of her company, taking care of even the most morbid and distasteful work without hesitation. She also is fun to be around when she's off-the-clock, easy going, pleasant, and friendly with those she interacts with and very reliable and easy to work with when she is on the clock.
