3rd year of starting onion from seed. I basically do it the same way except I use plastic bins with holes in the bottom. I use about 2" to 3" of home made potting soil so I do not have to transplant before putting out in the garden. Started my onions on Jan 1st this year and are about 5" tall, already on their way to sturdy transplants in March. This is probably the best all around onion starting video I've seen, GREAT job Scott!

So, a few weeks ago I started rosemary in a cardboard egg carton and some onion seeds in a plastic egg carton. I've kept the seeds moist, in the sun, but uncovered. After watching your video I slid the cartons into a clear plastic bag and viola' today SPROUTS appeared. I won't be using the egg cartons to start my tomatoes and peppers, instead I'll use yogurt cups, but covering the moist seeds to keep the humidity in was the trick I missed previously! Thank you!!! Oh, I'm at 48° N latitude, and so close to Canada that I say "A" involuntarily...

All I could find in Canada was onion sets, ended up ordering seeds from overseas last fall, the region they come from is supposed to be long day, so now I cross my fingers and hope and pray. 🤞 I ordered some of the onion sets as well, so I’m hoping some will go to seed, just so that I can collect the seeds for next spring. 🙈😂

I started onions from seed last season for the first time. I direct sowed the seeds. I really didn't think they would grow. But they did. We only have a solid 3 months to count on here in NNY Zone 4a. They were not big, a little bigger than my thumb. But my wife was happy because it was the right size to put in the freezer. I'm going to try it again this year. Enjoyed, take care!

Do you want a cute story about onions in my family? They are one of the reasons I started gardening. I knew my family liked onions. I bought a packet of our favorite onion seeds to put in my garden, thinking a hundred or so onions would last us a year. I also realized it would take 6 months for the 100 onions that I planted to bear fruit. I started thinking about how often I use onions every month. I realized 100 would never last me a year. I went to the store and I bought 64 more onion sets. Then I started thinking about all the alternative ways we use onions, - onion powder, onion salt, onion dip, sour cream and onion popcorn, onion cough remedy, etc. I'm thinking I'll be planting 100 every three months!

My story isn't so cute. I grew onions from seed for the first time last year. They did so well I didn't know what to do with all of them. I pickled all of the red onions ending up with about 7 quarts in the refrigerator. I loved them - a little too much. I got really sick, ending up in the emergency room with extreme abdominal pain. My intestines were swollen and inflamed. It took over a month to get better. Once I started eating again I slowly added in different foods and found out the raw pickled onions were the culprit. Turns out my brother can't eat raw onions either. He has the same reaction. I'm only growing a few yellow onions this year to use in cooking.

I grow onions from seed at 36 degrees N latitude, and start quite early; seeds are already in trays. Just about any market with a big produce department packages artichokes, fennel bulb, large tomatoes, and similarly-sized veggies in tall (2.5 to 4") plastic containers that have holes in the bottom and top. The thing that works so well about these containers is the lid. The lid helps contain humidity, helping ensure that the surface of the soil does not dry out. Considering the shallow planting depth and long germination period for onion seed, these tiny greenhouses work really well paired with LED shop lights or grow lights, seeing the seeds through their relatively fragile germination period. Once the seeds are germinated, cut off the lids and keep the soil moist until planting time. So they do not fall over, trim the onion starts at around 6" height until ready to plant outside.

See how the new growth looks. It's relatively normal for the leaves to curl soon after transplanting because the plant is stressed. It usually recovers. If it continues it could be a problem with the soil, possible contamination.

Possibly. Starting seeds late in the year, harvesting, and storing the plants so they don't dry out can be done. I've sown seeds and left the plants in the ground over winter and then harvested the next year. The bulbs aren't always as big, but it's easy.

I had a nice tray of onion seedlings back in January, but accidentally left them outside after a sunny day and then had a freeze that night and killed the tray. I truly enjoyed this video. This is my first year trying to grow onions. I started them last week Wednesday and this Monday started to have small sprouts. I was worried they wouldn’t germinate quickly due to not having another heat mat but they germinated fast. My only question and I’m sure it goes along with all other plants but what about Harding off. You said they can go out before the last frost date so how if anything will that effect Harding off.
@GardenerScott

Good question. Hardening off is good for most plants. Onions are tough, can handle cold, and will do okay without it, but if you have them in pots they will benefit from hardening off a few days before planting.

Until I viewed this video and even though I knew the difference between short, medium and long day onions, for whatever reason I've never really paid attention to which type I would put it my garden (I need a long day onion). You also reminded me that I hadn't sown my onions yet and it's Feb. 10 - I probably should have seeded them at least three weeks ago. I'll do that today. One point of clarification: you referred to your planting medium as "seed-starting" mix, although later in the video you refer to it as potting mix. I've always thought that seed starting and germinating mixes are both sterile mediums. Thinking about it, maybe the seed starting mix is simply a lighter version of a potting mix? Thanks for all the useful videos.

Here's you some good news for today. I started a new job last week at a Jorgensen log homes. I started outside peeling the log bark off the logs using a draw knife. The owner has a mountain of composted wood chips and bark out behind the shop. I ask him what he does with it? He said I let it sit and rot. Do you have a use for it? 😲 I've been hauling it in my 16 foot dump trailer since Tuesday. He lets me use the skid loader to load it. He gives it to me free of charge. I get home and dump it and get another load the next day after work. I think I've hauled 5 tons total guesstimate so far and I'm going for more. This stuff is black gold. It's loaded with earth worms and it's moist soft composted wood bark chips and saw dust pine needles. I've been gardening Eden method for a while now. It was slowly building up the soil. Now it just got kicked into high gear. My chickens are happy little cultivators and spread it out plus are pooping in it adding nitrogen as they go. I couldn't believe no one else comes and gets this free compost. If I had to guess there's at least 300 semi truck loads out back of the shop. I'm stocking up as much of it as I can. I can mix this with my animal manure, compost it and just keep going. If you or anyone else has anything to add please comment below. It's always good to hear from you.

That's great! A lot like leaf mold, it is indeed black gold for the garden.

I’m starting my onion seeds on January 22nd, so this video was in valuable, so thank you! As far as the 1/4 inch vermiculite goes, would the “coarse” kind that I have on hand work ok?

I have read that you should keep them trimmed down to 3-4 inches, if this is so, should or could I continue to do so once they are in the ground to put more energy into growing the bulb? Thanks.
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott Жыл бұрын
Usually an initial trim is all that's needed. Once the plants are outside I let them grow.

Scott, thank you for this video. You may be addressing this in an upcoming video, but what do you do about the seed coat not releasing from the tip of the onion sprouts? It happens to more than half of mine.
@GardenerScott

I will be covering that in another video. I usually snip the leaf or carefully pull it out.

💚 Love your videos and thanks for your time spent doing them! I'm in Arizona 🎋 and my whole garden is germinating/growing inside right now. Last frost date is April 8th. Wondering 🤔 how close should my grow lights be to the seedlings? 🤔
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 2 жыл бұрын
Most grow lights should be just a few inches above the plants. Very strong lights can be a little higher. The plants will talk to you. If the stems get long and thin they're telling you the light needs to be closer and/or stronger.

LMFAO Flat of Italy - I'm watching this because I messed up my flat of that very same variety! I did ok with another one but Flat of Italy was a variety I wanted to try so it was a bummer when it didn't go right. I think I left it in too sunny a spot

How many hours of grow light per day should intermediate onion seedlings get? I have seen mixed answers in my searches - I think burpee's directions said 16 hrs, but other sites say more than 12hrs of light per day can result in the bulb forming too early(small onions).
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 11 ай бұрын
Because bulbing can begin when intermediate onions start getting 12-14 hours of light, it's a good idea to use less than that.

I don't know what varieties you have available because they will probably be different than what we grow in the U.S. Check with your preferred seed provider and you should definitely choose a long-day variety.
