The trans argument is basically "Just because you have a biological advantage doesn't mean you are guaranteed to win" which is true but the whole problem is that there is the advantage in the first place. People who are taller have a natural advantage in basketball, should we exclude them from the sport? At the upper echelon of these competitions (like, WAY beyond collegiate level), difference in hormonal balance and whatnot DO actually provide what might be considered an unfair advantage. However, if you know anything about this topic, in any competition where where a trans person's hormone levels, etc. might provide an unfair advantage in the pinnacle of a sport, trans people (particularly trans women) DO have hormone measurements taken to ensure they're roughly in line with other cis women competitors.

@perperperpen
@perperperpen 3 жыл бұрын
@@JordanSMonk well not really, because even in sports with gender neutral ranking, there are events specifically for lower ranked players. Its not like the only ones who get attention are at the top, but generally, the best players overall will be the most respected, similar to how the majority of men's leagues in sports have much more viewers than women's leagues and the players are more well known. That doesnt mean you cant be a respected women's athlete, but its just kind of how sports work. The best player overall will always get the most attention, regardless of how you sort or divide the sport. And then also the benefit of such a system is that rather than being forced into mens or womens categories, trans people can fall somewhere in between, but still be competing against players of similar skill.

"If you think trans women have an advantage even with hormones, are you ok with trans men playing at a disadvantage even with hormones?" Yes, because you can't play with an advantage, but no one will stop you if you want to have a disadvantage. No one would have stopped Usain Bolt if he wanted to run with lead shoes, because it would have been his choice to compete at a disadvantage. The problem is that at the top levels, where competitions are decided by minuscule differences, even the slightest advantage matters, and in the case of trans women, having an advantage that others couldn't have chosen to have is unfair for the biological women that are competing.

Of course there's gonna be cases in which someone born as a female, would out perform a biological male in a sport. But you can't ignore the fact that on average that there's gonna be an advantage to being born one gender for specific things. Not all things of course. But this whole argument should be based around averages instead of thinking that it's either all correct, or none of it is correct. Because that's never the case with anything.

We are talking about ATHLETES, people at the top of their game competing against each other where every advantage makes a difference. Trans athletes especially trans women have an advantage biologically, it doesn’t matter if it’s mean or you think it’s cruel to segregate them, in a conversation about competing it doesn’t matter how you feel it is undeniably a fact and it is a disgrace to allow cisgender to compete with them.

Edit: WARNING This is a theory, their is no evidence for these assumptions just my reasoning, sorry for any inaccuracies. If you were to look at a physical attribute that gave a competitive advantage, like strength and recorded data from 1000 athletes across all genders, I theorise you would see 4 peaks of binomially distributed data as each gender would have a slight increase in average strength, (cis-F, trans-M *because of hormones*, trans-F, cis-M) this clearly indicates that if cis and trans are grouped there would be a clear advantage for a proportion of the population degrading competitive integrity. The alternative is to simply assign people according to their biological gender, this would also demonstrate one group being physically dominant due to the effect of hormone therapy. This solution also comes with the unpleasant idea of labelling trans individuals as something they are not. I think the ideal solution would be to segregate them into 4 categories this would maintain competitive integrity as there would binomial distribution of physically advantageous traits. And hopefully trans individuals would feel more comfortable with being accurately identified. Note: I am utilising my knowledge from med school (have not graduated as of yet) to base my biological assumption that hormone therapy is not able to reverse most of the biologically advantageous developmental traits for men. Rebuttal: Outing trans people - this is definitely a big problem, but is not the core issue as it pertains to the idea of biology in sport. And it is something society will have to overcome. What’s the point in becoming a better athlete - I think this point has some merit, if my idea is put in place it is very likely their will be a much closer overlap of individuals who could compete in a different leagues *for lack of a better word* thus being relegated to a level of competition you see as beneath you could be disappointing. Although to counter that here’s an example, does a female athlete feel any less accomplishment when winning a gold medal just because a man can do it slightly better, I would argue no because there is a fundamental understanding that men have a somewhat unfair higher physical peak. As such people shouldn’t feel that their lvl of competition is below another due to the effects of biology. Gender neutrality in sport - Um… No, this one is pretty obvious. But people can set up their own leagues, rules and provided it generates enough money for it to stay afloat, who really cares.

I think that at the professional level, categories need to be even more granular beyond "biological male" and "biological female." I understand where people who make the argument in favor of trans people having a separate category are coming from, but I think at that point you need to separate based on other biological features depending on the sport. For example, imagine playing a height-dependent sport like basketball as a short male. That is almost 100% genetic. You could be the best basketball player in the world proportional to your height and never do well because you are too short. At the professional level, factors like height, weight, testosterone levels, etc all need to be taken into account. Arbitrarily dividing based on JUST being biologically male or female, while easy, doesn't really separate as fairly as you might hope. At the professional level just work it out based on appropriate attributes. Sports like wrestling already divide by weight class anyway. At the casual level, who tf cares.

This is why women don't need to work out differently than men when it comes to building strength" therefore she concludes that women and men experience same body mass, muscle fibre increase with the same workout routines. now imagine if dieting can reduce your muscle fibres, what can hormone therapy do to your body? (keep in mind that hormones have a greater effect and impact to ones body than any other bio chemical means.) thats right, a trans womans body changes dramatically, the body mass is redistributed by the estrogen intake allowing more muscles to crowd towards the hips, muscles soften in the arms, chest, back and increase towards the hip, leg and groint regions. so you see, im not the one who neds to "take biology classes" here.

Good vid, I’ve had this conversation with lots of people. In my opinion, the roller derby athlete solidified my opinion. She said “when we have this conversation, no one is taking into account the hours of hard work I’ve put in working out, at the gym, etc.” when in reality, that’s not what is the issue. Good for you if you go to the gym and work out to improve and compete, props!! However, If you were born as a cis male and transitioned post puberty, you transitioned into female taking all your post puberty biology with you. So even if your testosterone levels are lowered and hormonal balance is differed by transitioning, you are still at an advantage due to biological advantages, such as higher lung capacity, higher V02 max, running economy, having a larger heart, naturally higher muscle mass, etc. Imagine a foot race where you are in basically the same physical shape as everyone else in the race, but your starting line is set 10 feet ahead of all of your opponents. This is why trans female cross country runners are smashing female cross country records wherever they compete. Hope I’m not coming off insensitive to trans athletes, or to pidgeonhole trans female athletes. I just personally feel it’s too problematic to the integrity of a sport for trans athletes and cis athletes to compete together (in most sports, sports is a very broad term nowadays. Chess, ESports and dominoes all have had arguments made for being considered sports. None of what I said above applies to nontraditional unathletic sports) Sorry for the paragraph lmao

Most of the record-breaking, unfair performance that we have seen from trans athletes were caused by disregarding the hormone therapy regulations. Maybe you could compare that to "teen guys", but when the regulations are actually being followed, there is no point being made by talking about how men differ from women. Virtually all of that is reversed by the effects of hormone therapy. That's why trans women, contrary to popular delusion, arent breaking all of these insane records and winning every match they participate in. To win, they need to still be a talented athlete, and because there are so few of them, the chances of them also being a talented athlete is incredibly small. The battle against transgender athletes is just one of those things that will eventually fade, because the issue itself has little if not zero effects on sports.

Imo. the discussion about 'do men have a physical advantage in sports' is best explained when you look at the olympic results. Just as an example, the 100m sprint entry time for men was 10.05s. That's half a second faster than any female athlete has ever run. And the list goes on and on and on.

Whenever hypotheticals come into play everyone always says doing it case by case isn't feasible. It is. Its actually very easy to have a group of people decide if an athlete plays in the womens or mens divisions. You don't need to dismantle the existence of the female average and the male average. But you can easily just put the outliers where they're supposed to be. You can have a woman in the mens volleyball team and still call it the mens volleyball team. You don't need to change the name of the sport as long as the name of the trophy is just volleyball champion.

IMO, it is so hard to argur that if you are built to have an advantage in a sport, you will be using the time someone with a disadvantage is using to overcome it to further progress your advantage. Then the hard limits of bone structures and densities for certain sports is simply an advantage that can't be overcome. Of course you can make up for it in other areas but it is an inherent sex-based advantage nonetheless. This is case-by-case and sport-by-sport which makes these blanket-statement solutions so short-sighted imo. I sadly think that it is better to segregate between male and female for most sports because there are too many variables at play. Either that, or simply go for it and see what happens so there's more more anecdotal evidence to go off of

No one is going to do that. The amount of transathletes is way too small. The whole point of professional sports is having a physical advantage. Basketball players are chosen because their genetics make them taller, on top of all the practice they’ve done of course and how good they are. Wrestling have weight categories already. This all comes down to people who think women and men cannot be physically equal. Sure biologically there are differences, but professional athletes are ALL outliers, they are above average in their abilities and physique. In any sport there is a woman who can beat a man, because they have trained for it and they have that physical advantage, regardless of if they are trans or not.
