@@jameelahall7126Thank you so much for watching and sharing! It hasn’t been the easiest choice to make for sure because I don’t want to invalidate anyone’s experience OR the work done by Cut It Kinky.

Thank you so much for the conversation! I appreciate your effort to be balanced AND respectful to all sides. I followed the 30 day detox and purchased the BCG WYDH ebook. I agree with you about leave ins (as well as protein and deep conditioners) being a part of the curated list but the emphasis surely was on the one hour wash day and cleansing, conditioning (generally with a rinse out conditioner) and styling to get 7 to 10 days out of your wash and go. DCs, leave ins and protein were to be used on a as needed basis or with guidance for a stylist. However, this leaves a potential gap in information. I feel like BGC could benefit from more After the Detox conversations. How to properly apply your essential elements to create your regimen beyond the initial 30 days. Then considerations like climate, porosity, activity level, hydration level can help inform your products and usage. Most of their IG posts are geared (IMO) to the newbies. If beyond the detox help is needed then seeing a stylist or subscribing to SSC is recommended but those avenues are not accessible to all. For example, my curl stylist is a 2 hour drive away (and I’m fortunate).

From the consumers perspective , videos, platforms leave ins were discouraged for wash n go's. Thank you for sharing stylist vantage point. Great conversation covering all bases.

Thank you beautiful sister for this information. I never followed the BGC. But I like a variety of creams, gels, mousses, and definitely a leave in with grey cottonie hair and the humid climate I live in. But the clarity you have given has helped to determine what type of leave ins, gels, creams, and even mousses I can look to use. It's always good to learn something so to enhance one's life.

Another great video..its important for us to discover and figure out what works best for our individual hair.. developing our own customized list..there are alot of curly hair lists floating out on the internet...I used BGC list as a guide ..not a bible..and it did help start my curly hair journey off the right way...I had no issues... I also think during this journey having the right hair styist to help you flourish is key

The two curl artist I have been to, never used leave in conditioner. I continued to use leave in myself. I recall BGC saying on video leave in is a styler. She never encouraged using it on her IG videos. I’m not subscribed to SSC, so I don’t know what was stated in there. I got the impression leave in was discouraged.

Thank you so much for this balanced view. I follow BGC , did there class in their old platform before see some coils came to be , bought their book “wash your damn hair”. Nowhere in there teaching did they mention do not use butter or oils they said no raw oils or butters ,use formulated products to suit the elements of your hair they never said do not use leave in they said, make sure you know what your lifestyle is before making styling decisions, before you choose your style products , they said wash your hair they never said over cleanse your hair but as with the natural communitywe learn from word of mouth we never go back to the script to really understand what was said and this leads to hysteria that I have witnessed in the community and have decided to disconnect and unsubscribe from a lot of natural hair influencers and creators as they continue to feed into the hysteria you know I’m kind of old-school. I have been in this Natural community from the inception when we had long hair-forums was it called “long hair don’t care”, during the times of curlynikki that was the epitome of natural hair and along with the hysteria that came with it and I just do not want to engage anymore. I will buy books. I will read. I will understand I will Research. I will not play into the current hysteria that is going on it’s always a cycle. I don’t really understand. Remember the curly hair method. Nobody really understood that we were just doing whatever we wanted and guess what happened we hated and blame it for our failures. Nobody really understood what curly hair method was really . The bottom line is with BGC they always said partner with a stylist so that you may understand what your hair needs bottom line. This is important, , again thank you for your balance view.

I go back to those days 20 years ago on natural hair care forums. Times have changed from back then because advice wasn’t money driven. As far as stylist, from my impression they were anti-oil, leave-in, and deep conditioner. Mine never recommended any of those to me. I think this could be why there was confusion with consumers who went to stylist who trained under them.

@@ArethaRenee Fairpoint but I think it is a bit untrue that the OG community was not driven by money lot of the current companies natural hair products sprung out of the era from people like Carol’s daughter , shea moisture Mielle to name a few came from that era , if your were in that community the girls were selling stuff made in there kitchens to customers. The point I was try to make is that there seems to be a cycle with the natural community this debate is not new. What is new is stylist are now stakeholders in the conversation however there’s something that someone ( quote @ curlvison) he said taking one or two classes does not make you a curl specialist we as consumers have to do our due diligence this resonates with me . We have to follow insta photos, yelp , google reviews , etc. and see if the aesthetic meets our needs and if a Hairstylist cannot pivot when their clients are having issues, does that make them Hairstylist because the basics still remain the same, whether you have curls , wavy or straight hair, if a client is having an issue, we should be able to troubleshoot able to find solutions to our clients needs . This remains the issue and is fundamental. Maybe this would be a critique of BGC the implementation post detox but a lot of the customers complaining were not paying clients they mostly followed their platform and may have picked a stylist from the list with or without due diligence. May be I am wrong . I believe the fundamentals remain the same. but like most things in the community we throw the baby out with the bath water.

This perspective of the different climates certainly hit home for me. As one that travels all over and recently observed changes in super dry California, the thought of getting more humectant gels came to me, but not necessarily adding leave- in. Yes you hit the nail on the head of longevity being the goal. What they said was leave-ins would lessen the efficacy of the gels. Not to never use it. So if you wanted longevity it was discouraged. I have been in the consumer platforms where more education was given. Many consumers that weren't (and some that were) listened to a snippet on ig and ran with a blanket "summarization" vs what was actually said. Same way "no oils no butters" became what was received, though that's not what they said. Thank you for reading 'from the horse's mouth' :) I loved both parts of this!
