Retired 2022; I was planning to work; but I realized work was optional with rental properties and pension; not to mention no debt and living frugal; we also reduced cost of living by relocating overseas to minimize cost of living by $2-3K monthly vs. $5-6K living in the great USA. All the best!

Official retirement date is April 9th but I am medically retiring. Took a few months off to decompress then got offered a good job. It was my goal to work on my own business but now working full time again I don’t have much time for that. I am like the guy commenting above. I love the money but eventually I will get tired of working and do my own thing.

Soooo , I did 24 years with 100%Va so my take home pay was actually more than what it was in the military do to not paying taxes but when I was offered a job while on transition leave I took it going from E8 pay to O6 pay is hard to pass up! If the job starts to be a pain then I will quit, but boy do I love MONEY!!

Congratulations on your retirement. I retire from the Marines this July after 30+ years (E-1 to O-5… with some Chief Warrant Officer ranks in between). I start work while on Terminal Leave so I don’t get stir crazy and so I can keep up with cost of living in SoCal. As a part time investor and trader, the opportunity cost of not working as soon as possible is not something I want to spend a lot of time calculating.

Took Skillbridge and tried out a corporate HR position. Didn't like it and already know I was going to take time off to travel. Traveled, decompressed after a year and now in real estate. Not sure if this is my end all be all career but that's the beauty of having a pension to keep you afloat. I do know one thing, after a year I was recharged and ready to go versus non-stop working and not being to take a break. Lifestyle is huge, I was a W4 living like a E5 so I didn't have the pressures of getting a job right away or at all. While spending more time with my kids and having the funds for anything wanted or traveling.

Be advised that you need to choose your last day of military active service that works for you. For example, retiring Dec 31, the 31st day will be considered to be in January, yeah no shit. So the VA will not process your paperwork if you are paid even just 1 day into a new month. Then it takes a whole month to certify the paperwork so you will nit start receiving g a check until March. Yup, that's the truth. Verify it and sell a few days of leave if you need to but ensure you ask exact details based on the VAs consideration of 31 days in the calendar.

If Have enough savings. Take your time and find yourself. And you'll know if you need to work or not. That being said, it's all about finding the right job after leaving the military. I'm blessed. I get Uber 6 figures so I don't have to work anymore.

Real Estate. I’m going to build up a small portfolio to replace what I’d be losing in retirement. Try to get back to 100% pay somewhat passively

Take some time off…. Then take a job working in private security. Share your knowledge with the softer younger generation, and hopefully positivity influence them.

We’re in a similar boat then. Same deal with my spouse. I’m still on Terminal, so no idea what my VA rating will be yet, but I happened to land a very good job through my network, so I’m willing to work for a bit, then get into something I really want. Point is, you’ll have options.

Immediately get employed. With today’s inflation with the standard of living, my obligations to my ex wife through child support and children with current wife, I’ll need to take in $10k/month to maintain this lifestyle. No breaks 😅🤷🏻‍♂️
