Do You Ever Cheat On Your Comic Collecting Goals? Original Art Dilemma - Plus Giveaway Winner

In this video I share a couple recent ORIGINAL ART pick ups that I made. I'm super happy to have theses pieces and I might have a new addiction here. But it got me thinking, do you guys find yourselves spread too thin across other collectables? Do you find that spending money on things other than comic books prevents you from being able to acquire the grails you really want? While that could potentially be true I think I like to just take things as they come and "let collectables find me". While I have books that are on my list I never feel the need to overextend to get them. I find this approach of simply taking advantage of opportunities has led me to have a really enjoyable collecting experience.
What do you guys think? Are there other collectable areas you guys are really into?

If you are into original art now, I would definitely check out Karen's Pages. She shows some incredible original art on her channel and has collected OA for over a decade. Can't recommend her channel enough.

Thanks for mentioning R Bakshi! I’m 58, and his movie “Wizards” was the coolest thing on Earth to me when I was 10 yrs old in’77. Cartoons like Superfriends and Spider-Man were a poor substitute for comics, but the Bakshi movies were worthy. I hope all of the 30+ year old comic fans are aware of Wizards.

You made a logical purchase. Original art is a one-of-a-kind acquisition. It is essential to know what you are buying and not overpay. I also collect non-sports cards, big little books, and magazines. That does not take away from my comic book money as much as sending items to be graded,

Because I couldn't afford to buy comics and art, I never considered OA. After I left comic collecting at the start of this year, I stumbled into buying original comic book and animation art, and I've been thoroughly enjoying it. I saw that Enchantress art during the CL auction, and you got it for a good price. I think it being Enchantress art (vs. a character like Wolverine) probably helped keep the price down. I also saw that LOTR background during the History of Animation auction, which had a lot of great stuff from the Mike Glad collection. I scored a couple of animation drawings from one of the 1944 Tom and Jerry cartoon shorts and a couple of animation cels.

I just bought a couple of OG art pieces for the first (and second) time myself. Cool showpieces, but nothing beats that hot fresh (old) grail book in the PC! Congrats on your pickups man!

I too have recently picked up some oa and some original pages when I pivoted from comics as the art became available and the books either weren't available or the sellers wanted more than they were going for in the market. So it was a no brainer buying some 1 of 1 pieces.

Rogue is a character I preferred art of since her 1st appearance is plentiful and she's not even on the cover.

Besides comic books I collect vintage toy soldiers Made by Britain’s toy soldiers . Most of mine are pre war to 1970 They tend to go up in price every year . I keep a balance between the two. Cool piece that you got.

We always say collect what you want when it comes to Comics. I fully believe that can be expanded to any collectible. Some collect comics some collect trading cards others collect stickers. Why should original art be any different?

There is only 1 OA page. 11x17 value is the best investment in the comic space period. I went full Ham on Deadpool for the last 8 years and many many others. I’ve never sold a page. Thanks for the shout outs for others showing OG art. I love that color Swag! Nice pickup!

This would be a good opportunity to get some OA collectors on the channel. Dinesh Shamdasani of Bad Idea comics has a wonderful collection including the covers to ASM 300, Uncanny X-men 266 and Darkhawk 1

I've got into collecting the Russ Cochran EC Library Hardcover in the slipcases. They're beautiful. Then I'm down the rabbit hole to "The Big Book" and then I bought some ltd prints of EC covers that were recoloured by Marie Severin and come in lovely wallets.

I constantly pivot between many hobbies and I can’t recommend it enough as it makes collecting never go stale and some of my best purchases are from being at the right place at right time and not worrying about any goals or my other collections. I’ve recently been collecting original art from Zoe Thorogood. She’s my favorite current comic creator and I highly recommend anyone to check her out!

Seriously though, OA is awesome if you find a piece that speaks to you. Collect what you love, and buy what you can afford. Don't be a comic purist when there is some real cool stuff out there.

As an Artist myself, I'm glad to see this, but id rather see you invest in unground artists instead of artists that already have a following. Giving someone a chance is more profitable to your soul than a status piece on your wall . Just one artist's humble opinion.

But those aren't really different categories. You're still buying pop culture comic-ish stuff. Same thing if you bought action figures. Now, if you bought original fine art (not by comic book artists), or first edition literature, or vintage cars, that would be stepping into other categories.
