Do You Have Good Squatting Leverages? How to Find Your Limb to Torso Ratio

A big part of developing a solid technique and troubleshooting potential issues is being aware of your build. How your limbs and torso are proportioned to each other will determine leverages, which determines how much strain each structure is going to endure at key points of the lift. This is a quick and dirty way to find out how your femurs line up with your torso.

@@OMAR-vk9pi makes it so my back has to be closer to flat and my legs are more upright. With this I am still a very leg dominant deadlifter. My wingspan is also longer than my height so I conventional and do an offset grip with a lot of hand roll on heavier sets. I also have very long thigh bone compared to my short lower legs. (basically I'm 90% thighbone) and this means I get a lot on my leg drive early in the drive phase since I don't have to squat as low. My current 1 Rpm at bodyweight of 160 lbs is 335 lbs and this was after 5x5s on hang cleans and my working 4x5s at 315 lbs on deadlifts so I think my number could be higher fresh. Alan Thrall has a good video about the subject kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZKxk2h-edOcj6c&ab_channel=AlanThrall . Having a different body doesn't mean u need to 'cheat' the position, it means u need to try different lifting forms and positions to find the optimal way for you. I think that low back squat is beneficial for long torso short legged athlete because it engages more hamstring by leaning forward more compared to high bar squat and that shouldn't affect the center of mass cause the weight is placed more backwards on your back so even if your head is more forward the bar will compensate. High bar squat is more beneficial for short torso long legged athlete because they naturally have to lean forward so the bar stay above their mid foot. In my opinion low bar squat is a try to mimic the short torso long legged squat pattern even that short legged people generally can squat more weight because the weight is moving shorter distance. That's my opinion, I am not professional coach.

Been noticing this for years before I managed to DIAL in my squat form. Not only the leg/torso ratio - you also have to worry about the FEMUR/TIBIA ratio aka Thigh vs shin ratio - it will affect how deep you can go and how much ankle mobility you need to hit depth. With long femurs, I need a bigger angle on the ankle to hit depth without tipping over backwards - coupled with a short torso, I struggle so much to improve my 1rm even though my legs blows up substantially. Leverage is a hell of a thing.

Since I started lifting and learned about leverages, I look at people and try to see whether they'd be good at this or that exercise. When I didn't even consider lifting weights and thus had no experience doing so, I was totally unaware of these things. People were people. They were tall or short or they looked big or thin or they looked confident or menacing or creepy, or hairy or bald, or they had big boobs or little ones or big asses, and so on. Now I can spot the lifters and, what's more, I can spot the good lifters, because they have a well-rounded physique. Most lifters (the bros) seem to focus on just arms and chest and their results are never to write home about; but if you see someone with a big back and legs (and ass), there is a high likelihood of this person knowing how to lift. The good benchers are easy to recognize: barrel-chested and short arms. Usually, these people are short of built and drink a lot of beer. If only they were to commit to benching instead of belching...more records would shatter. Sometimes, I see an apeman human, i.e. an individual with really long arms. These are usually tall people who are not particularly broad. I think some could make good deadlifters. The good squatters are those with a long torso and short legs. I think they often look like dwarves, hahahah (if they are short). I picture them with an axe and doing other dwarf things, like battling orcs. Anyway, I have too much fantasy. As for my own built, it is narrow-framed and close to six feet, with longish arms and legs, but not too long. All things considered, my leverages are about average, I think. Nothing stands out that much, in terms of length... My arms are kinda long, but not too long, so my pressing doesn't come easily. I can stay fairly upright when squatting and go very deep, so people often comment about it; but my squat is lagging way behind my deadlift, for some reason. Deadlifting is fairly easy, but I think that's odd, considering my arms are of average length and my torso and legs are also about equal. I don't lock out just above my knees, the way you see the apemen do. Oh well, much work to do. We have to work with what we got.

To compensate for my super long femurs, I’ve been using special squat shoes with elevated heels, trying to widen my stance, keep the bar lower on my back, and strengthen specifically to keep my knees and hip joints rotated out. And of course hams since I tend to be quad dominant. My good mornings are easier than squats. It’s weird.

Hey, long legs short torso too, im at 220 deadlift and 190 squat. How does your deadlift starting position look like (hips height, back angle, foot stance and angle)? Im always too far forward, its very hard to find the position to push with the legs.

@@Cieciowski i lower my hips so my knees are flush with my forearms - don't go lower than that. My upper back is slightly rounded on purpuse (you shouldn't try this unless you're elite). I stand very narrow! Like very very narrow. Feet directly ahead, maybe toes pushed a bit out. I try to put weight on my mid-foot, and envision the start like a leg press with my torso locked. When I reach the knees it's a hip thruster.

I'm built similarly, albiet shorter at 5' 6", and I am trying to figure out how to make the deadlift more comfortable. I have been doing conventional for the last year or so (only been back in the gym 11 months after a really long hiatus) and I have a hell of a time keeping neutral spine when the weight gets over 300 lbs. I have heard sumo is a but more comfortable for guys with long torsos but I have never liked it. I think I will give it another shot and really go with it for a month or so to get used to the differences. Good trick to see if your legs are short, mine also barely go to my nips.

I am 5'5" and deadlifting is pretty easy for me because my wingspan is 4" greater than my height (5'9" wingspan w/ 5'5" height), so I am more upright when I grab the bar. I pull both conventional and sumo and I would say if you have the hip mobility/glute strength, sumo is wayyy easier on the back (spinal erectors). Maybe try pulling off of blocks and work your way down lower and lower to the floor over a couple weeks/months while maintaining that neutral spine. Hope that helps!

I've 5'6" with long torso and short arms/legs as well. I tried Sumo for almost 6 months and it made my hips feel really beat up so I switched back to conventional. I'm still chasing after the elusive 405lbs DL!

Great video. Any useful insights on how your arm length/shoulders are prohibiting/benefiting your bench press and overhead press?
@AlexanderBromley
@AlexanderBromley 4 жыл бұрын
I have short humerus bones and, even though it's a leverage advantage in pressing, I feel that it actually makes benching hard on my shoulders. It's hard to explain without visuals, basically the angle at the shoulder has to be more extreme to get the bar to your chest with a short upper arm than with a longer one, even though the leverages are a bit more cumbersome. There's not a lot to tweak on overhead pressing as far as technique goes; changing grip width to, say, shorten the distance will reduce compression a the start. For long and short limbed pressers alike, getting good just requires dedication to technique, speed, and muscular development.

It would be cool to see a video about this. I really like your way of using the leg press to visualize this. I have a goal of hitting 200, 300, 400, 500 on the main lifts. 200 and 300 (press and bench) came to me without even trying. I still have about 50 pounds to go for a 400 pound squat and a 500 pound deadlift. I think I have average limb links (knees to shoulders in leg press). I have no idea why pressing and bench come so easily to me. I know other lifters who are exactly the opposite
@AlexanderBromley
@AlexanderBromley 4 жыл бұрын
Too many variable to make a guess without watching you train for a couple of weeks. It can have to do with limb proportions, but also tendon insertions, training approach, exercise selection, learning curve for the technique or simply that you enjoy doing one lift more than the other so it gets treated more aggressively. It's important to know that squats and deadlifts cant be treated just like pressing; technique usually takes longer to nail down, you can't train as hard and as often, and weaknesses tend to get exposed faster. It's important to be aware of things like limb proportion to make better training decisions without being fixated on them as the main reason for success or failure (there's many top lifters who have all sorts of different builds).
