In this video, my son Dori and I talk about the English names of everyday items around the house. Even advanced learners often don't know the names of everyday household objects. How many did you know already?
💛A little about me:
-I am a Cambridge CELTA certified English teacher
-I have a Master's degree in Language and Literacy Education
-I am American but I live in Canada (my husband is a francophone Canadian, which is why Dori says he is "both" in this video 😂)
-I've taught English in the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, and France!

I would love to do a series of these if enough people are interested! I think household items often get overlooked in class because, well, they are kind of boring to learn 😅 and also there are so many regional differences and country-specific terms.

Hi Brittany, According to the Oxford English dictionary "In" means 'while doing something; while something is happening. Can I use 'In' in the following sentences instead of 'while'? 1)a)I fell asleep (while) watching the Film. b) I fell asleep in watching the Film. 2) a) She burnt her hand (while) cooking dinner. b) She burnt her hand in cooking dinner. 3)a) While swimming in the river, I saw an alligator. b) In swimming in the river, I saw an alligator. Do you think whether 1)b, 2)b and 3)b are grammatically correct?
@EnglishwithBrittany
@EnglishwithBrittany 11 күн бұрын
Hi there! I could be wrong because I’ve never thought about this before (very interesting question!), but I have to disagree with the dictionary a bit 😬 “In” used in the way that you describe is not really like “while.” It’s more like the meaning of “by” or “because” in my opinion. One action sort of causes another action to happen directly (“while” is more like two actions just happening at the same time, not one causing the other to happen). So for example: In reading many books about history, I became an expert on that subject. Perhaps we could say that your example sentences have cause and effect (like 2b) but for some reason, it’s not working for me. It does not feel like something I would ever say. I’ll have to think about this and do a bit of research :)

@EnglishwithBrittany
@EnglishwithBrittany 5 күн бұрын
@@RhmBnb-on2lq Hi! To me, a colander is the same thing as a strainer. In my family, we always said “strainer” though, and never “colander.” I just did a bit of research and it seems that some people consider them to be slightly different kitchen tools (a strainer has smaller holes) but to me, they have always been the same thing 🤷‍♀️💕

Hello Brittany! Thank you for the video! A quick question. So at 1.17 you asked what paper towels are used for, and your son said 'wiping some water'. But then repeated the sentences adding 'up' - 'wiping up some water'. Is it incorrect to say that without the up?
@EnglishwithBrittany
@EnglishwithBrittany 10 күн бұрын
SUCH a great question. I'm not sure that "wiping" alone would be incorrect, but you're right -- I do sort of correct him here. I understand exactly what he is saying, but still I say something slightly different back to him. To my ears, "wiping water" is not precise enough. 'Wiping' can just be the action of moving the water across the table, without lifting the paper towel. "Wiping up" feels more accurate to me and so I say it back to him here. English is the worst! :)

5:45 Hello, Isn’t it more of a colander?
@EnglishwithBrittany
@EnglishwithBrittany Күн бұрын
Hi! Another person said the same thing and I think you’re right! A strainer has smaller holes, and a colander larger holes like the one in this video. In my family, we never used the word “colander” and just called all of them “strainers” so this is what I have said my whole life 😂
