Eye-assisted swallowing existed in temnospondyls as a whole. All possess large vacuities on their palate for this purpose. Other tetrapod lineages had and have more solid palates.

Yes, they used to dominate the top of the food chain, which is why they were large in size. However, now for survival, smaller sizes make it easier to hide. Therefore, it's difficult to spot frogs when we go to ponds nowadays, but we can still hear them croaking all the time. Haha.
