Been wearing cowboy hats for 63 years and am still amazed how durable they are . I had one similar to this with the hole from grabbing it there all the time , never fixed it . It’s retired now . Great job and bringing it back to life . Thanks for sharing.

Fun fact: people didn't really wear cowboy hats in the west until the 1860s when John B Stetson moved out west from NJ. He couldnt believe that people were still wearing unstylish, flea-infested, Davey Crockett style caps so he marketed the Stetson until it became a status symbol and point of pride. There's less than a 100 years seperating the rise of the Stetson from the rise of the Yankee fitted.

You do amazing work. I have began restoring hats. I have a block, heated aluminum block, steamer and a large inventory of second hand hats. I also have a leather craft shop. However, I have tried to find patterns for making the leather sweatbands for the inside. I have 2 industrial sewing machines and a lot of leather in the 1.5 oz. range. Can you direct me towards a place where I can find the patterns? It would be more affordable to make my own than to buy them pre-made. Thank you for any direction you may give.

The hole was cut. Look at the edges. I have seen as couple of intentionally stressed hats with a hole like that cut into them. I do not know why but it seems to be a thing.
