It’s a forest service vehicle and even though it’s not quite a bumpside I immediately thought of Forest Bump as a name... It’s a beautiful machine and as much as I would like to see it in its original color, I would rather leave it as it is. Just do some sensible technical upgrades like brakes and steering. And leave the 300 I6 engine where it is obviously.

The three hundred six is good for about two hundred thousand miles and then by by oil pump. My buddy had a 1984 F100 good truck though and a nother buddy of mine had a 1988 good solid truck it had three hundred thousand miles but by by oil pump. If someone buys one the best thing to do is replace the oil pump and you should be good.

I would definitely keep that motor, for low speed lugging and 4 wheeling there is none better. I think the only things I would do to the truck is new weather stripping, fix the rust issues, If you can do a disk brake upgrade up front I would look into that because if you are off road and go through a creek then you won't have any brakes till they are dry and I would put a posi in rear end.

In the spring of 1966, Dad brought home a 66 F-250 Camper Special with an ElDorado truck camper. Fuller Ford out of Cincinnati, OH sold trucks alongside trucks. Truck campers were hot in the early 1960's, perhaps because of John Steinbeck's book Travels with Charley? It was a custom cab, 352 cid, 4-speed. Mom, Dad, 4 brothers in the camper and sister who always rode up front, we transversed this country from Expo 67 in Montreal to Hemisfair 68 in San Antonio and many beach and hunting trips in between. Great memories! He sold the truck & camper and switched to a Country Sedan wagon with a 429 2V to tow a 24 foot trailer. Another 4 years of great memories. Three of his boys continue to RV, making great memories. Thanks for sharing your truck.

You are right about that inline 6 - those things are really sturdy. I love that old chain-latch release for the tailgate. I never knew about the old-style truck bed on the 4WD models. My Dad had a 74 one-ton; the original mirror had to be replaced because the horse kept using the mirror to scratch his butt; breaking it off a few times. One of the problems with that gas tank in the cab is, a minor leak was not unusual; the gas fumes could get you over time. You are so right about the wing windows. When you get it up to 30-40 mph, that wing window will give you a nice little breeze.

I still have a couple 352's, but it's much easier to get parts for the big 6 and it can easily be modernized to give a little more power. Also, the original mirror would have gone in the square hole in the front of the door and is about 3-4" in diameter. Almost useful.

I drove my '65 F100 for over 30 years. It was 2WD and had the custom cab and fleetside bed. Came with a 240-I 6 and 3 on the tree when I bought it in '72 for $750. By the time it was totalled out in a crash in 2002 I had converted it to F250 running gear swapped in from 70's vintage F250s. It had a rebuilt 1982 302, a New Process 435 4 spd., Dana 60 rear axle and 8 lug single piston caliper power front disc brakes (they fit onto the original twin I beams axle). That truck had a lot of memories for me. I drove it through more than 1/2 of the US states. It was my work truck, carrying a portable welder and tools for my business for the last 17 years I had it, inside of a truck bed canopy. I was really glad I didn't die when it got wrecked: it still didn't have any seat belts (I could drive legally without seat belts because the truck didn't come with them!).

I'd love to see you keep the original engine and running gear, though possibly do some bolt on power adders from Esslinger Engineering. One interesting side note is that the straight six was the easiest on the battery when it came to starting. The cold cranking amps needed was super low. The V8's and V6's took more and the straight 4, even more. I think a body and paint restoration would be great, though for safety I'd definitely want to upgrade to a more modern braking system. Dual chamber master cylinder with power, though not sure about going to all around discs, but that would be safer for long downhill runs, especially with any kind of load. I'd put a fuel cell in the bed, to keep adding to the safety factor. If it would work, I think the speed sensitive heavier duty rack and pinion steering that came in the 80's Mustang GT's would be a great add on, as would a roll bar with 6 point harnesses, or at the very least a well secured lap and shoulder belt. As far as a name goes, "Tangerine" may be good if you make it a more vibrant orange. However "Tandeleo", as in the old George Carlin skit mentioning "Tandeleo Breckinridge", "My what a colorful name" comment, could well be a great inside joke. Not sure if that comedy bit was from the 70's, rather than 60's though. If you go with a green, I think a sweet metallic yellowish-tinted green fade would be great and then call her "Olivine", like the gem of the same color. I see so many possibilities! My family had a 73 Ford Ranger XLT with a 302 in it. Another Ford workhorse engine. It was so smooth that if you were stopped at a light, you'd also thought you'd stalled. No vibration or noise when idling. That baby was pure silk and was donated to their church in the late 80's, still running perfectly.

But my younger brother had a 1965 Galaxie 4dr brougham. He couldn't pass state inspection because of a rusted frame. The car had a 352 V8 4 barrel carb. I was 17 and had no idea what I was doing. I bought the Galaxie for the motor. I put it into the F250 mated up to the 3 on the tree transmission. Turns out the truck was a rocketship. I watched this video and the other one you did when you bought it. It was entertaining to see a younger adult who didn't grow up around older trucks, review it, and be astonished about all the stuff that just was the way it was back in the day. It's also always nice to see vehicles and scenery from near where I grew up in Colorado back in the late '60s through late '80s, even though the population there has gone nuts over the last 30+ years. As a '65, this truck is a very interesting combination of what was current at the time along with a heap of parts from the '64 and older generations of trucks probably due to the fact it's in that transition period when they first went to Twin I-beam and the new series of engines, along with it being a 4x4 and a fleet vehicle put together for customers like the Forrest Service. I learned to drive in a 2WD '64 short bed F100 with 223 I6 and 3-on-the-tree sitting on my great uncle's lap while we worked the pedals and shift lever and I steered. I acquired that truck from him when I got my driver's permit back when I was 15 years old in the summer of 1984. I learned a lot working on that truck as a teen, and it definitely influenced my car hobby today. I still have that truck today along with two other short bed '64s I've picked up mainly as parts trucks over the years. I'm looking forward to eventually restoring/resto-modding the truck I've had for nearly 37 years. On your truck, I say fix what needs to be fixed, upgrade the brakes to a more modern system so you can compensate for the other dumb drivers out there, and just drive it and enjoy it for what it is. It's a cool old truck that was meant to do cool old truck stuff like going fishing, hunting, helping your friends move, feeding your livestock, and getting you where you needed to go when the snow was deep and the DOT didn't do nearly what they do now to clear roads. There are so many stories I could tell about driving my '64 F100 through the years.

Keep it original. This’s is special to me. My dad had this truck back in the 80s. He would take me for rides in it when I was a kid. He put a mechanical cruise control in it. Sadly he died he a jeep accident. After that the Ford caught on fire mysteriously. Devastating losses for sure. Nice truck Tommy. Thanks for the memories this’s video brought back.

My grandfather had a 1961 Ford truck. It was one of the vehicles I learned to drive in when I was 16 in 1970. That thing was a beast to drive and as you said Tommy, you had to really pay attention when you were driving this critter or things would get really interesting really fast.

I have a friend with this body style Ford that he uses on the farm. I doubt there's much original left of the drive train on his, though. He's a shade tree mechanic that might have a John Deere motor and a Massey-Harris transmission in it by now. I wonder if he ever built that electric tractor he talked about?

When I was in junior high(1973 ish) the morning bus passed a yard with a '65 ford pickup going to waste that I really wanted to save. Later on I bought a 1967 f250 that I had for a few years before buying a small 4x4. The old Ford drank oil, but was tough. I slipped off an icy road into the ditch one morning and scratched the bumpers paint. Now I'm in my 60's and seriously looking into a 1970 f250 4x4. Nothing like an automotive workout to make you feel young again.

They all have their own personalities. And are great fun to drive. I’ll never own a new vehicle. The classics are just to much fun. @@StephaneDemers Yep, they had "armstrong steering," "powerful brakes," and "260 air conditioning" (2 windows at 60 mph). Great revisit to the past! I had a 1965 F100 back in the 1970s and wish I still had it. Regarding the tailgate chains & catches, the better & more secure way to hook them if from the bottom when in the up or closed position and from the front when the tailgate is in the lowered position so they are less likely to pop out while driving over rough surfaces.

Yess! I agree! I think this would be awesome. Rangers from the early/mid 90s through the early 2000s were pure workhorses and didn’t and dont’t die. It would be really cool if you guys did a series where you compared the ranger to the Tacoma. They’re SUPER similar, from the engine options to the cabins to the ride, to the transmissions, to the reliability and both are freaking awesome. (Although the rangers are significantly cheaper ;).

FYI, that chrome blank in the dash is the space for a throttle cable which would be an option. It was very useful on 4WD trucks. Could be used when winching yourself out of a ditch, doing farm chores, with a PTO, or just impressing your friends by getting out and walking uphill beside the slow moving vehicle.

i will continue to say this, todays "save driving technology" sometimes is more of a hindrance than a positive thing, drivers have devolved into finding other things to occupied themselves, rather than paying attention to the driving they are doing. some of this makes you safer in an accident and i think that is great, but that whole lane keep assist and auto breaking has taught people to just not pay attention to the fact that they are driving a murder weapon at 60+ MPH.... its a shame :/

I bought my 1965 F100 in 1985 (for $300). 2WD short bed Flareside that was also built in San Jose, and was also a Forest Service truck. It came with the 352 V8. Unlike the 6, the V8 really needed the choke. That engine does not like the cold, damp winters in the Bay Area. Been driving it regularly ever since 1985. I upgraded the brakes to power disk up front, maintained the drum in the rear. That is a highly recommended change, even if you are not towing. 1973 F100 disk brake spindles bold right on. My steering was really stiff for many years, but got much better when I finally rebuilt the steering box. Half of the reciprocating balls where in the bottom of the steering box, not doing their job. I also added Vintage Air air conditioning because I am getting soft in my senior years. Love my truck. A friend of mine has a 1966 F100 Crew Cab, 4WD. That is a rare truck.
