To find the correct angle on the honing rod, it helps when the rod's hilt is rectangular. Just lean the blade of the knife against the bottom of the hilt and have the edge touch the surface of the rod, this should give you an angle of about 20 degrees. Some honing rods even have an angle guide built in.

Carbide removes metal wayyyyyy too quickly. Pull through sharpeners also leave a really bad edge on a knife.

No water? And, when using the traditional bar, shouldn't you slide from the blunt to the sharp edge, "restoring the wedge"? it seems to me you are doing the opposite, "pushing" the sharp edge towards the steel bar.

No, you have the cutting edge facing forward. And water is required for sharpening on waterstones only. The rod is for honing, not sharpening.

NO NO NO!!! Do NOT use pull through sharpeners. Come on HOK. You know how fast that will reduce the life of a knife. Especially if used by people getting their instructions on knife care from KZbin videos.
