I started out playing classical in the 70’s and never lost my love for it. The best part about that foundation was the fretboard technique. So few use that pinky finger and mine is as important as the other three. Not to mention the real estate I can cover on non-classical guitar necks.

Great video - very inspiring. I have several steel string guitars and am in the process of getting a nylon string - I very much enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the subject.

My main guitar is classic, Mostly practise on that before I pick up my Steel stringed guitars.

i use mine with a pick to emulate the sound of a lute. Play single notes using harmonic minor, and bam! you're back in the renaissance.

Interesting video. I've never owned a nylon string guitar. I started on steel string. I don't think I'll ever buy a nylon string because it would probably never get used, but you still made good points in favor of them. Thanks, Jack.

Yes Yes Yes, you need a nylon string guitar. I play classical guitar since 1973. Steel string electrics since this year. Two totally different Instruments, each with their own peculiarities. I love both now.

2008 LaPatrie Etude, my guitar teacher recommended it Love it I have very large hands so well built my guitar teacher had me put down plastic film protection above and below the strings to protect the top

I use to study Classical guitar back about 50 years ago. I still have the guitar along with my 1964 Gibson acoustic and Fender Statocaster. I forgot everything I learned in classical guitar. But I have picked up playing the Gibson and Fender. After seeing this video, I guess I need to take my classical guitar to my local luthier and have him set it up and put strings on it. By the way, a video on how to change strings on a classical would be nice. I forgot how to do that too!

Does anyone make a nylon-stringed acoustic guitar with neck dimensions like a steel-stringed acoustic, or even a steel-stringed electric? I have small hands, and I really don't enjoy the wide flat fretboards on classical guitars. I do like the nylon-string tone though.

There are a few luthiers out there that come close. Cordoba makes a crossover and a fusion that has a cutaway and a 48mm nut width but that’s still pretty wide by acoustic guitar standards. Not sure how practical it would be given classical guitar strings vibration patterns. They need a bit more space to move.

I am pretty sure Yamaha has one for exactly that reason. I looked at one years ago and I'm pretty sure it was a Yamaha.

Hey Jack! I own a classical guitar for about 13 years and I started playing guitar with it. Even though I mostly play with electrics, I love their sound. But as for their sound, there is a lot to learn. Even 20 euros/dollars can make a difference. Personally, I believe the best price range for someone who plays classical pieces and want a good sound for other genres is between 300 and 500. I played once in a music store with a classical guitar worth 10 grand (for a couple of minutes only)! I still remember the richness and loudness of the tone till today! But, as you said, even budget guitars sound great. You just need to try them!

I have one -- my mother bought it in 1955. It was a cheap guitar then -- handmade by a luthier in Mexico. I looked it up on eBay once and found that the hardshell case is worth more than the guitar. That's roughly $30 for the guitar and $50 for the case. The thing is, it's the guitar sound I heard growing up. My mother played simple tunes and strumming rhythms on it. I'll never part with it -- though it's not really very easy to keep in tune and the neck is not straight (has no truss rod). It sounds good, though.

Question. Is a nylon string easier on the finger joints. Meaning does it take less pressure l, applied to make a note than an acoustic note. Thanks
