Do you really need 200 Ah of batteries to camp? Can a small lithium battery be enough?

I was pretty confident that you would be ok. I’ve been running a 75ah in the Cruiser for over two years now. I’ve never run out of power and the Engel hasn’t been turned off in the car in all that time. Good to see someone who isn’t punting a trillion amp hours so you can run air fryer and coffee machine and hair dryer while camping 😊😊

Nothing wrong with running everything and anything you want, if you can. As someone that has done every type of camping over many decades through all the various degrees of roughing it, I like being able to use no fuss AC appliances as an alternative. There's nothing that beats a real electric toaster for making toast 😁

I was a little worried at first but now after running the freezer in that heat I'm stoked 🤠 Why pay for 200amp of lithium and all the extra expenses if you don't need it! I'm over the moon, one best mods I've done 🥳

For overnight yep this is all you really need. The problem will arise when you get stuck due to bad weather or just overcast days where you will have to run the vehicle every day (most likely twice per day with a 50Ah) to charge the battery up. Our system that I installed is a bit of overkill but I wanted a system that if we get caught out in black soil or other extremely boggy areas that we can easily last an entire week with absolutely no solar or vehicle charging needed. I went with a Kings 300Ah so that it will run our 75L dual zone fridge in the car plus anything else we need in the pop top camper van that we tow. Going extreme remote camping will put you into situations where an unexpected weather system can have you hunkered down for a week or more.

Yeah good point, but I just figured if we managed 6 months off grid with 100amp in the camper trailer purely charging off 1 solar panel, then a 50amp with a bcbc in the car should be fine. So far so good, but a good experiment to test. 🤠👍

Cool ep and set up. But it would worry me not having a lot extra battery power to spare, we have 2 x 140amp Lithiums but run 50lt chest and a 95lt upright fridge freezer with 240wats of solar on the roof and take extra Solar,

I have 300w on the roof and 300ah kings lifepo4 battery in the caravan and couldn’t be happier, I went that way after experiencing a week of rain down in Tassie and the battery being on a super special. BUT if I had to do it again I would probably go with two 200ah batteries and a 3000w inverter so I could run the aircon particularly in winter on heater mode. I ran a 110ah battery but it didn't keep up in cloudy weather. It sucked having to go driving to top the battery up. 330ah now. all good.

I think when running small storage ( I have a renogy 50A/h, a 30lt fridge and 30lt freezer, pump and lights) it will help a lot if you have top quality solar and DcDc hardware. I have a kings 160w panel on the roof and on a sunny mid day the previous cheap MPPT controller would only see 130w at best. I upgraded to a Victron MPPT and in the same conditions, 160w constant and it is so fast. Within a second or so after coming out the shade it jumps to peak. The cheap one would take about 20 seconds to adjust. C Larger cable size is helpful and if you run multiple panels having them series or parrallel will make a difference depending on how you park and or have moveable panels. And the bigger the better for a DCDC for quick top ups. I sat for 5 days in the mostly shade with about 2 hours afternoon sun on the roof and using a 200w blanket moved around to get the sun. 1 or 2 10 minute engine runs to top up. It's doable but you have to actively manage it.

Mate I'm stoked with this new set-up, and like I said, I payed for all of this, no kickbacks from ItechWorld. 3 summer trips now with this set-up now and really happy with it. Plus it's full charged in a hour idling the car if I needed! 🤠👍

I would really like to know/see a diagram of how you wired a dc-dc charger in the truck and a dc-dc charger in the camper trailer! I have an AGM battery in the truck and Lith batteries in the camper. Running a Redarc VSR for the truck AGM at the moment. Cheers from way over here!

I want to remove my AGM from the engine bay and replace it with a lithium battery in the rear. I'll have to plan it carefully though as the space between the drawers and the seat is only 50mm. I still need to fully utilise the rear cargo area since I have kids with a cello and double bass to carry around to and from school.

There are different brands that have different lithium battery sizes that might fit there, just check any online reviews before going any brand. But I'm so happy with this set-up now. Our old lead acid under the bonnet would have lasted 1 night in those conditions and then we would have been plugging the fridge into the camper for extra power!

AGM batteries I find better because of the safety aspect. Never run out of battery power. Note: I need to clean my 3 solar panels.

I had to update the agm in our camper after they failed before 2 years old. I'll never go back, but I'll always go for a know brand of lithium with lots of people's reviews 🤠👍

@@GoingOverland There's no going back. I have 300Ah (3x100Ah) of LFP and in use 24/7 for 2 years so far and if anything I can't fathom why I didn't switch sooner.

Good to see it’s worked out Adam. For me not enough fat in the system, don’t drive for a day your buggered. I’m going 300ah but I also want to run an induction / coffee machine. I won’t run the lithium battery below 20% state of charge to ensure I can get longevity out of the lithium battery. Happy it does what it needs to do for you 😊

Howdy. In one of your previous videos I remember you got a leak in your water tank and since then, you've used a piece of 10mm high density foam rubber up under the tank to protect it. Great idea! Could you tell me where you bought this foam from? Online, or from a shop? Is it what's known as EVA foam? I think you said you'd stuck it underneath the vehicle with silicone. Any info on this welcome!

Provided you've got a small number of low current devices and can replenish the charge at a suitable rate theres no reason you cant run a small capacity battery.

The fridge/freezer is our biggest power consumer and it was pulling nearly 4amps in that heat, so I was worried considering it would be 14 hours without solar input overnight, but the fridge cycles so ended up with plenty left in the battery, so really happy with it 😀

Hi guys! Thanks for this test. So 50AH works fine for you guys over a 24 hour period during a hot night and day. Looks like you covered the worst of that. With the DC to DC its all good. But what if you are stuck somewhere - dunno, the thingy me bob failed and engine won't start. It sounds like your setup will do this job when its a sunny day and the solar is properly deployed but maybe lacking if it's overcast?

Well the batteries get disconnected once the starting battery drops below 12.8v so it's similar to the old setup in that regard, as for this set-up working only when it's sunny, yes you are right we don't have the same capacity compared to 100amp of lithium, but that was never the goal. The goal was to have equal capacity to our old 100amp lead acid and take as much weight out of the car as possible and I think we've successfully done it 😀. Worse case, we just idle the car for an hour and we'll have enough power to run the fridge overnight 🤠👍

@@GoingOverland Nah, its great you found the right size battery, cheaper, lighter...all damn good reasons for the 50AH. I was just wondering, in a round about way, if you could use an additional solar blanket or panel.

I meant to ask from the last video of facing island, you now have a san him inflatable swag instead of the kings supatrail swag, is that due do water ingress issues or pole issues or the fact that the san him is 150mm wider? I have a supatrail and have had water issues . would appreciate your feedback.

Don't get a San air swag, thing leaks so much! We only use it for the dogs and if we know we can cover it or it's not going to rain. Also they don't get packed like a traditional swag, they expect you to take the mattress out and fold up the tent, if you try to roll it up the straps won't hold it tight. I've complained to them that ours had threads out everywhere and mesh door was sewn through outside canvas zipper!
