Some big box store stuff just either doesn't last or doesn't perform. I have just cheap tools but all the ratchets I use (which aren't a lot admittedly) are snapon because they are way more user friendly. I also upgraded my screwdrivers because they kept rounding off the tips. I wish I didn't buy the picks, but I do like the hose picks. A lot of my electrical diag stuff is snapon though, especially dealing with sensitive items, I don't want to ask myself "do I actually trust this multimeter" anymore

I noticed being aggravated and injured decreased when I was using Snap-On flank drive and I decreased damage to the fasteners. I was given better work to do that paid better when I bought real professional Snap-On. A guy who brings his dad's tools from his home garage is considered a little more likely to be untrained and unprofessional or could be insincere. After working a year or so, most guys who go on to become technicians have learned to save time by not damaging the work, but repairing it. The shop looks more professional with name brand tool boxes in it. The customer can see professionalism in the obvious investment in tools. A bunch of home tools in a shop looks disorganized and unprofessional. It doesn't mean they can't fix your car. But they may damage more. Which costs the customer more

Craftsman has served me well and has a tradesman everything I buy is either Lowe's or home Depot. So I can't do anything about the Milwaukee that the company provide. But if it's my money I'm not spending what I'd spend on buying a house for my tools. Especially when I haven't broken a tool and at least 10 years. Now drill bits every drill bit breaks. Now I've lost 10 mm sockets everywhere. But I lose socks in the dryer too so! They are a nice tool, but they are not worth their price. When you can go buy 10 of the same item for the price of their one. Plus so many of these companies have moved to lifetime warranties. Now the power tools are another story completely. But snap on ain't even in the running whenever we start talking about power tools. They don't even use lithium ion batteries yet! Plus I've already proved a lot of the tools you're buying from snap-on or rebranded. Some of my Craftsman are made by people that made the snap-on. Some of the Doyle pliers are rebranded matco. So you're talking about value but if you know that they're made in the same exact factory with the same exact metal. How are you getting a deal? You're basically buying snake oil

From my experience you most certainly do not ever need snap on tools. Plenty of good quality tool companies out there make excellent tools at a must more reasonable price. Just look at Milwaukee, there electric tools speak for there selfs, but there hand tools are getting really good. Especially there USA made line. I feel much better grabbing a USA made 30 dollar pair of plyers vs a 100+ dollar pair that are arguably worse but snap on thinks there made of gold. And don’t give me that your buying a service crap you could have 3 of the same Milwaukee tools in back up for the price of the one snap on that’s sure to break and need warranty.

Mac makes some really good ones from actual tool steal… or atleast they did, I have a set that’s many decades old and it feels like grabbing onto those old 1940’s thru 1960’s machine shop stuff. Heavy duty metal made to repeat the same task thousands of times a day. Same with some old Proto tools,

i hate that youtubers only talk about harborfreight and tool trucks. there is soo many great tool compagnies that makes as good tools if not better than snap on and most of the time they are way cheaper than snap on like jet, gray, sunnex, ingersol rand, astro pneumatic, chicago pneumatic gearwrench... there are so many that never gets talked about

I own snap on hand tools, a used late ‘70s snap on tool box and that’s it. Everything else with their logo on it is a waste of money IMO. Their newer air tools don’t last and their cordless options are trash (and more expensive) when compared to M12 and M18 tools.

Can't speak for the normal sockets, but we use hex head sockets a lot at work. I gotta say Snap On makes some of the best ones. That's comparing it to mac, Cornwell and whatever company Matco uses for theirs.

My way of buying tools now is simple, if I don’t use it often I go cheap but if I’m gonna use a tool all the time I’m going with snap on because I know I can beat the crap out of it and if it breaks I can always warranty it out. As for boxes, used snap on or some other affordable quality brand.

I’ve been wrenching on mining equipment for years. I have many tools. From craftsman, wright, proto, and harbor freight. I’m sorry but they all work just fine. Everything I have has a lifetime warranty! I typically make a warranty run once a month and get stuff replaced. Im hard on my tools. I split 3 1.5” 3/4 drive sockets today. 2 wrights and 1 proto. Very stubborn bolt!

Here’s my problem with the SnapOn Mafia, Anybody can buy and use what they want. If I have 15 sets of Harbor Freight Ratchet that I can take to the store daily and warranty everyday if need be and the SnapOn Mafia Mechanic has 15 SnapOn Ratchet and only uses one because the other are just part of the collection. He’s just mad that I didn’t drink the Kool Aid and dish out all the money for tools to collect dust. True story but it was my Craftsman collection and I warranty once a week, if that and at the time I could go to Parts America and trade them in when I picked up parts. Yes, some tools are worth the money to spend, ie their scan tools, but stop bullying people into buying SnapOn. That is why they rage quit.

A SNAP-ON collection like this can look overwhelming and impossible at first. But do what this man says. Buy what you need and the rest will follow. Before you know it, you’ll have specialty tools you barely use.

You do need snap on hand tools as well as some of the mechanic only tools where milwaukee doesn't have. Same for truck mechanic and MAC. Just because you are flat rate only doing pdi and brake job guy, don't drag down real mechanic fixing difficult things day to day. I use insulated tools to diamond connector file everything is necessary

I think theres reasons for both. Flank drive wrenches grab on the open end so well, they are a must for alignments and such. However, a Pittsburgh hammer will hit like a snap on. A Pittsburgh socket will turn like a snap on. A Pittsburgh extension will reach like a snap on....im just saying. Ive had great cheap tools that gave me no reason to buy the very overpriced snap on equivalent.

I think duty cycle is a consideration. If you use the tool once and it made you $50 but you spent $100 for the tool, you’re upside down. You’d have been better off borrowing it from coworker and tossing him $10. Lol But if you pay $500 and it allows you to cut 3 hours off a job, making you $800 and you come across it 4 times a year, clearly it was worth it.

As a motorcycle mechanic, I don't need a shit ton of tools. I've got a 55" Snap-On Classic bottom, and a couple of my older small top boxes. Bottom pretty well full, lots of snap-on and mac. As well as some cheaper stuff. Recently got into Gearwrench, and like their stuff. Seems like a good bang for your buck. I get a kick out of guys bashing the tool trucks, buying and using nice tools is one of the best parts of pulling wrenches. Some guys don't mind spending more for the Cadillac CTS, while other guys are happy with their Honda Accord lol

The Snap On 1/4 impact swivel sockets are second to none. Amazing quality and compact. Honestly love my Snap On ratchets. But I also own a lot of KOKEN Japan stuff which is japans Snap On. Their stuff is super high end. Also own Wright, SUNEX, ICON, KNIPEX, TEKTON. Most of my stuff now is Snap On or KOKEN. For certain things you can’t beat American/Japanese craftsmanship. Sorry not sorry.

Im a relatively new heavy mechanic. I’m trying out napa Carlyle stuff and it’s pretty good. Carlyle adjustable wrenches are by far the best brand I’ve used . I’ve been using the same 10” I bought years ago and it’s gotten me through diesel and welding school, personal vehicle work, emergency atv repairs, and my new job.

So over this subject. So old and meaningless. No, of course you don't have to buy Snap-On tools. You can use cheaper tools, all day long. Like EVERYTHING else, if you WANT the best shit, you buy Snap-On. I buy both Snap-On and cheap brands. It depends on what tool I'm getting and how much I'm going to use the tool.

Real ones know it's the skill and knowledge in the person, not the name on the tool that matters most. Harbor Freight makes some great tools and they cost less than others and have lifetime warranty - it's a great value proposition. But for some reason Strap-On fanatics take this truth as a personal insult. If you're new and on a tight budget, buy as many tools as you can - saving money on wrenches and sockets frees up money for more tools. Then start making and saving money and upgrade as you go and by all means, laugh at the Strap-On fanatics....they're all up in their feels and perhaps you can make them cry.....it isn't hard to do.

cheep,Simple, heavy tools like impact sockets, pry bars, huge monkey wrenches I'll get whatever. They are just big dumb solid steel tools that are inherently hard to break. electric stuff there is no lifetime, no point. Have nice rachets and swivel sockets with lifetime along with some other tools that are more accurate things that Snap on is great at. So many want to be with one brand and that's crazy. Way to much stuff out there. Snap on makes some nice stuff along with others. Prices, no one would argue they are priced a little high. The convenience of coming to the shop is my trade off.

Nope not at all, you don’t even need a SnapOn toolbox…. There’s so much wasted money on these things!!!! Could buy a 73” box from another brand for under 2k and get rebates on it too, instead of some SnapOn that’s 5x more. Plus SnapOn sucks since you can’t just go out and buy stuff any day or time of the week, you have to wait for a truck… other brands like Icon, Gearwrench, Milwaukee and others can be bought for way less money and you can buy them nearly everywhere at anytime. Milwaukee specifically is really good for power tools which you can grab at almost any store with tools. Even brands like Ingersoll Rand make really heavy duty stuff that’s cheaper then SnapOn
