I agree! I am a relatively new quilter, but I’ve been crafting for about 20 years. I’m constantly learning and growing so I just don’t know what I will want to make in the future. When I’m ready to make something I’ll cut the scraps to size at that time.

Today I finally had a chance to start cutting up my scraps. I’m doing 1.5” strips, 2.5”squares and strips, and 5” squares. Those are the sizes I will be most likely to use.

Now Pat, you’ve quit teaching, and gone to meddling. 🤣. I have bins for large piece colors, I have a bin of thin strips and use them for strip quilt squares, and I have 2-1/2 sq for traffic jam and many bins and boxes of EVERYTHING. I probably need an intervention. I can say that your ideas over the past few months have helped me clear out some of the “I’ll never use this, but I’ll keep just in case”. Oh well, you can lead a horse to water....... please keep up giving us great ideas for scraps, especially the ones that help with separation anxiety. I love watching you and your ideas are awesome, so please keep them coming. Surely I’m not the only hoarder. Hugs and kisses to you Pat and the shipping dept.

Good Evening Pat. I don’t have a lot of scraps now because I have been cutting mine up as I go for a long time, now I ‘m using them to make my scrapy traffic jam quilt. And the rest I have in snap close containers in order lol. Thanks and I do appreciate everything you do to keep us quilters in line, so sweet of you. ❤️🧵😃🥤

I like your message. I have too many different sizes of scraps. I hate cleaning up my scrap bin. About two weeks ago I came home from work and my sister had organized my scrap bin. Hopefully I will do a better job with my scraps in 2020 and will make a quilt with them.

You're right! Some of us find joy in cutting up scraps into smaller units (WHY?) But I have 3 basic scrap boxes, 2.5, 5 " squares and smaller, and strips for string quilts. Then when the boxes get full I dive into a scrap quilt. But lately I have been using up more scraps in my backings and that is fun.

Pat Thank-you for your inspiration and guidance. Newbe Quilter - I have chosen to QUAG my quilts. (Cheaper) I just started taking my scraps and making blocks, courthouse, crumb, dance, and a template block. My plan is to use these blocks for the back of my future quilts. I have sorted all my scraps by color. I do not cut them until I decide on the block. Having fun breaking all the quilting rules, but I only went through 4 colors of my scraps, I still have a mountain of scraps to use up. ♪ Hi. Ho. Hi.HO. it is off to the sewing room I go. ♫

I do use them on a lot of charity quilts. Lately, as I'm cleaning up the sewing areas, I just turn them into a throw size flimsy (which is the size the charity wants), rather than cutting them up and storing them until I find a use. I've also about wiped out my orphan blocks stack, too, thank goodness!

I have small bins of sizes 2.5 to 7 at the half inch. Recently I started using my 2.5 inch as my leaders and enders and before I knew it I had gone through my whole bin and now have a stack of 4 patch. I have made 1 baby quilt with some and am doing some 16 patch with some. I have used my 3 to 4.5 inch for corner stones in borders, 6 inch for eye spy baby quilts. I don't separate colours so mine are all scrappy. Good for you walking and yoga. I also have started walking the dog more but as he is old and right now we have snow our walks have been shorter.

For years I’ve cut 1 1/2 inch and 2 1/2 inch (blocks and strips) and 5 in blocks. Recently added in 10 in blocks. I’ve found many uses and patterns for all. But, I definitely use more blocks than strips so may quit cutting strips someday soon. I’m making my 3rd Traffic Jam quilt this month. Would love to have you do even more scrappy blocks and quilts. You are a gem Pat. Thanks for all you do

Pat, this was an excellent topic to cover . I have never been a person to keep every scrap of fabric . I love the reminder to cut scraps that would be appropriate to what one likes to make . Before moving from TX to MN I cut many of my scraps into 4 1/2 and 5 inch squares , and even some 10” squares that I know I will use in projects . So glad I watched this !

This was very helpful. I never thought to cut odd sized 2 1/2" strips into 2 1/2" squares, and sort them by color. Why did I never think of that? I like adding small squates to quilt designs. I have lots of scraps to cut up now.

I think I tend to handle my scraps much differently than many quilters. I rarely cut up my decent sized scrap pieces into smaller sizes. If I have crumbs that I can cut 2" squares from I'll cut those to use in what I call illusion quilts. Which are small blocks of similar colors put together to form rainbows, or color puddles with a large motif like a red heart in the center of a quilt. I do save 1 1/2 inch strips for scrappy string quilts, but I do only one pattern, a lattice work of long strip blocks surrounded by white triangles to form the squares. Scrap quilts for me generally are a difficulty. I don't like quilts where one block connects to the next block with out a break/sashing. Nor do I like a hodgepodge of colors in a block. I find it difficult to look at muddle of colors, much less work with them. My favorite scrap quilt uses a block formed of one color strip and a white strip. It's a 6" windmill using 2" in scrips about 15 inches long. I can then use a myriad of colors in a quilt but each color block stands alone. As for storing my scraps, I have a nice large sewing room with shelves, drawers, cabinets, and lots of plastic boxes. Most of my fabrics are stored by type, big drawers for yardage, a cabinet for batiks, and shelves to holding quilts being worked on, or boxes holding a pattern and the fabric that I've chosen for it. Most of my smaller pieces of fabric are stored by color and stored in a series of stacking drawer. That way I have them ready to sort through and cut when I need them. Rather than cut them into a set size, only to find out later that I've cut a piece up that I really want to use it in a different size quilt piece.

I give my smaller scraps to my friends, family, and charities. I am a pictorial wall art quilter, although on occassion I use traditional pieced backgrounds or elements in my pictorial quilts. I do have a storage issue though, because I have built what I think of as my coloring box of fabrics to use for my quilts (and I also sometimes make a utility quilt). It solves my problem to some extent by having friends and family members who love to get my leftovers. LOL. I may cut them into squares and strips for them first because I'm the one with the accuquilt go die cutter and they don't. Or they come over and cut them, Love your videos. Cheers..BJ, in Ashburn, VA.

I started my scrap cutting before the bronchitis hit, so for the past three weeks, I've gotten nothing done. But I think I will concentrate on 5" and 2.5" squares. I don't have enough WOF pieces to cut strips. If I need a jelly roll, I'll go buy one. I'm going to start putting squares together as I sew one quilt and make one of the "extra" quilts. I love the red and white one you have.

When I have a piece that's close to a fat quarter, it gets folded and shelved. When I have a piece on the cutting board that's big enough, I cut a 10" block. I have a great shallow box to store them in neatly. It's not for a layer cake pattern, it's scrap stash ready to cut for what calls me. Then I cut a charm square or two, and a jelly roll strip or two. And a couple of pieces 2.5x5.+ and a piece or two of 2.5x4.5 (these last two are for specific scrap quilts in progress as leader/enders. Then there is the scrap tub under the table. Pieces that go in there are pressed nicely and have at least one straight edge. I'll do some scrappy vortex hunks soon. See my recent scrap quilts on Instagram (patternwhisperer) if you like.

Great advice! I hate cutting up scraps but I do like the 5 inch and 2 1/2 inch idea. Those are sizes I like and will use. I’m going to cut myself some slack and get rid of the rest of the mess I have. It takes up space I could use for stuff I actually use. I’m going to stop feeling guilty and enjoy the two sizes I’ll actually use.

I don't cut a lot of sizes. I cut 2 1/2 inch strips and squares mostly. I used a bunch when I made Traffic Jam when you first put it out. Now I need to make more. I keep thinking that I need a new leader and ender project so I better pull out my squares and get going!

Sure something to think about! I was on a Rail fence binge, but, even that, to me, is a minimum 2" strip. I don't usually make 1 1/2" either, unless I have a lot already, so I will make piano key borders. Strips that are 2 1/2" be binding, hexies, or Jelly roll quilts or blocks. Otherwise, 5" blocks is my minimum that I will cut ahead of time.

This was a much needed pop in, thank you! I’m going to change my strategy now because what I’ve been doing is not really productive and is not inspiring me to use my scraps. I’ve got 2 big bins, one is for 5” or larger and one is for less than 5”. I was so proud of myself for going through my big bag of all size scraps and organizing them in these 2 bins and I’ve been disciplined with keep my scraps divided into these 2 bins. However, you have taught me now that I need to cut my scraps into ready to use sizes so that when I have time to sew with them I’ll be ready to go. I’d actually love to make a scrappy patch work quilt using 2.5” squares. I just feel like if I just use up what I have now, that my next scraps will be so different that they won’t look good together with what I’ve already sewn. I think that’s what is holding me back. I like that the one you showed in this pop in looks like it’s mostly red and white. Pat, would you mind going one step further in with suggestions for scrappy 2.5 in quilt. You mentioned organizing them by color. I guess I could do that and maybe have more than one quilt going as I save my scraps. 🤷‍♀️. Like one that’s made with red and white scraps and one that’s made with blue and cream, etc. ???

Thank you, Pat, for this sisterly admonition.😋 I am a prime example: I’ve been cutting as I have scraps- into several sizes, as I went. They are neat and orderly in some clear drawers... but just aren’t getting used. I have LOTS of scraps, but they’re not all in the same sizes or, conversely, the scraps in one size are of many different colors and types. I thought this would be appealing, but, not so much. I need a better plan.

I made collage/art quilts so cutting to a pre-determined size doesn't work for me. My sysem: yardage on comic boards on shelf in IKEA cabinets - solids, novelty, then by color. Fat quarters same, they are sorted by type then color and sit in front/side of yardage. For anything smaller than FQ I have them sorted by type (patriotic, novelty) then color. Within a bin, let's say blues, I have all crumbs (smaller than 2.5") in a baggie, I have long strings in a baggie (for string quilting) and the rest are just stacked inside the bin. This is currently working for me. When I want to make a string quilt I will grab the bins I need (blue, gray, off-whites) whatever my scheme is and start sewing. In 30 years of quilting I have never grabbed my scrap bins and made a quilt specifically using 2.5" squares or 5" squares. For some reason my scrap quilts are random sizes, string quilts, or just sew-together-and-make-new-yardage. So I appreciate your question, how do you use scraps, because I didn't realize my answer before. It's good to know that my current method of storage works for me. Oh, I also have several bins of unused blocks, and I have a large bin of "corners" that I use for paper piecing. Some very cute patterns use triangles so anytime I cut a corner off when doing snowball, etc. I keep it separate. Works well for me.

I am making a full king size quilt with my larger scraps, square in a square, finished square size is 7 inches. the outside borders are grey of some sort.. the smaller scraps like you said they get tossed out, I do have a 2.5 inch in the making different colors, if I am going to use the long strips for a quilt I will keep better to cut them down for using them. Tks Pat On the note of chenille or cuddle, do you have to use batting on those or is the chenille or cuddle enough??
