I maxed out my risk tolerance at CA$400 with my male and female pair of Spot-breast angelfish (Genicanthus melanospilos). Have had them for nearly 2 years now but I still can relate to your description of “impending sense of doom” whenever I see scuffs on them from racing around in the rockwork.... but I absolutely LOVE them. Great plan to give the gem tang her own tank, will mitigate at least some aspects of anxiety....🤔

Is it just one tip? First thing I’d consider is flow - has anything changed that might put additional flow on that area? Next, I’d wonder if it got bumped somehow or scraped maybe by a snail shell or crab. I’d keep an eye on it, and if you see this happening in any other spots, try and reduce the flow that hits it as a first step. Also try and figure out if something has been stinging it or bothering it. But minor defleshing - gut says too much flow in that area. 🤷‍♀️

A Gem Tang cost more than me very first car back in 1979! Having said that, I have a Purple Tang, Yellow Tang, Kole Tang, and Naso Tang in my main display and they all get along very very well. Ive found that its best to introduce mult. Tang species all at once. All it takes is a new Tang-albeit an stupid expensive one to upset the harmony. Now if $ wasn't an object.......

A gem tang is a pretty fish with a big price tag. I think I'll stick to sailfins or more readily available fish like chromis or angels. I don't think I can spend so much on a single fish that, though beautiful, is really delicate.

Do I want one? Not really, nope. Ignoring the price tag element, if they were similar cost to say a purple tang I prefer the purple tang. Don't get me wrong it's a fine looking fish, but I think people tend being delusional about the way things look when they cost more money, I think 90% of the desire of this fish is that most people "can't have it" and that gets people wanting it even more (horrible trait we as humans have actually). Plus if I was given one for free, yeah I got a yellow & purple tang in my 200G tank that have already established a pecking order (purple is the runt of the litter) as mentioned I'd hate to have to deal with the stress of something really expensive possibly getting beat up, I mean heck I got rid of a foxface rabbit fish because it was nipping at the tail of my purple tang, I couldn't imagine needing (wanting?) to set up another tank just for this fish... and it's a tang so the tank should be relatively large too.

My biggest mistake was buying an aberrant black tang first day it came into lfs. Almost a thousand bucks. Died 2 days later in qt, never ate, and didn’t do good as soon as I got it home. Leason Learned, never buy a fish that’s just came in from shipping! All other fish I’ve ever bought that’s been at the lfs for weeks, always have made it, even through qt with medications. I always qt my fishes. But freshly shipped fish, I’ve had bad luck with.

This is the issue about fish people price them so high and they aren’t even seen as pets anymore, kinda sick of people in this hobby treating live animals like price tags or some expensive object, they could easily captive breed these tangs, they did it with yellow tangs and blue tangs, they just want money it’s sad

It's an eye of the beholder kind of thing. I like them, my wife thinks they are boring, just black with white spots. Same issue with black tangs. As far as my wife is concerned they are the same as a black molly! PR, good luck with the tang. It looks VERY healthy.
