I just realized Ariel is basically the first Anthropologist, and shes studying humans. The show was so good at exporing her character in that feild, the most Nerdy Disney Princess. I love the episodes when she finds new human items that makes a powrshift in the sealife socity like the boot that is a weapon or the armband that gets stuck. I love how her character is about being smart but also empathic towards others. She is not busy with boys or her beauty, but with her fandom and her friends. All the villains are aspects of powerlust or greed, and she saves the kingdom many times. Her father represents strength, but Ariel represents knowledge, and just as wise the father can be, just as naive can Ariel be. In many ways the serie is better than the movie (yes I said it) because after she becomes human she becomes super silly. the show is more like her in the start of the movie, dreamy and curious

I totally agree, she is a fantastic character, when I was a kid I always got upset when Ariel got married. I loved her at the beginning but couldn't relate to her motives when she was human. Wish she'd just fallen for the human world rather than a dude. They totally enriched the best parts of her character in the series and comic books. Hopefully even though she got married, she came into her own as princess/queen cos she had the making to be a great leader as you point out! Honestly if they're going to make it a black Ariel they need to make it a different character because Ariel is a very known Icon by Disney and that robs the character when you just end up calling her black Ariel and this isn't by me this is from the mouths of babes and a total disservice to the black community by handing an already existing character and changing up her colors to please insane people who may have good intentions but they're very destructive at least psychologically because it's basically saying hear you weren't something new well here's the same thing but with a new package that's lazy and just scummy at least call her something different and give her different colors I would suggest purple purple is a very pretty color for a mermaid and heck this can be closer to Modern Times just not that one weird mermaid movie they did and I can tell the story of what happened after Ariel try to merge merfolk and land Folk or it could be more of an origin story before Ariel and how the mermaids created Atlantis and stay primarily under the sea again I'm not against a black mermaid I'm against changing up characters skin color for the sake of looking Progressive and thinking people are just going to take it and be happy with the same s*** wrapped in a different package because again that is not right if you're going to go this route do a different story with a different character because you might find something really cool out of it and really cool ideas
@constantine91425 жыл бұрын
@@emilyrose9854 you hate false progressive shit which I totally agree with it's just when people speak up about it, it gets attacked and everything which in itself is so ironically stupid. I don't get the point of having super accurate like beauty and the beast which they did have some black people cause they were super progressive for that time but had it mainly white cause most french are. Then do what they are doing with the little mermaid when it was Danish like think the movie frozen....just comes off fake progressive. Like I'd be pissed if Mulan isn't Chinese for example if you want to have more people of color why not find an awesome well known story about a princess in Africa and do that along with other countries? they need new and fresh stories anyways instead of recycling stuff! I'd love that like they did with Moana but I remember in the 90s loving all these Disney princesses with dark brown hair like mine but I still loved Aurora from sleeping beauty too. Plus I could see some natural red haired girls feeling left out which isn't right either. God every girl I know with natural red hair has extreme self esteem issues tbh and the little mermaid was really their only girly girl Disney princess cause Merida wasn't at all like that and was more about the bond of mother and daughter. Just keep the original the original and create new stories where you have several examples of women around the world. Like we need something more than just Tiana for an example from princess and the frog which that movie I love even tho it came out when I was way older. Idk I'm rambling on probably not making sense I'm just saying they need to stop recycling and if do so respect the original while creating new just as beautiful stories. Like why is there just Mulan from that side of the world why not one if the very many Japanese folktales?! It's like replacing Mulan with a girl from Korea or Russia and I don't care for it.

You know, I think I like that Triton had that episode dedicated to his anger management issues right before the events of the move itself would have taken place. In the film, there's this under played moment when Triton pauses for half a beat, right after he's destroyed Ariel's collection, and I think that you could read that as him realizing that he had relapsed, and effectively broken the promise that he made about learning to control his anger. Which works, I think. He'd been nursing that rage toward humanity for a long time. It probably would have taken a lot of time and effort for him to get his anger under control, especially when he's kind of shown to be a bit of a. . .absent parent, due to his kingly duties.

Heh heh, yeah, Kura, that was a compelling reason for me too, even if I wasn't exactly thinking that at the time. I was actually reading an article about Ariel's design, and it made a surprising observation. Her body proportions are kinda crazy, what with her back seemingly bent in half to allow for greater flexibility in the water, and her center of gravity fixated near her upper chest, which would likely cause her to tip over a lot more in real life. That's before you even get to how exactly the whole "swimming with fins" thing is supposed to work; I've heard a few real-life "mermaids" who do promotional work while wearing artificial tails describe how it's ridiculously uncomfortable and nearly impossible to retrain the brain to compensate for leg immobility (no word on whether wheelchair life could make that sort of thing easier, but I personally doubt it).

I watched this show when I was about five and I remember loving it soooo much. Then again, one of the first things my mum showed me as a kid was the little mermaid and that had a huge impact on me in general, I love magic mermaid stuff to this day and I actually remember a lot about this show :D

Anyone remembered the Sorceress? I seem to have blocked her from memory as she freaked me out as a kid and then remembering her in a flash moment prompted me to look up this video

Yes yes yes!!! I was SO hoping you would talk about that "Charmed" episode! It creeped me out so much as a kid too!

I always thought Lobster Mobster sounded a bit Philadelphia. I also think that Sebastian once was exiled to the Chesapeake, the worst place possible for a crab.

11:39 I love how inaccurate this is. It's kinda cute that way. H. C. was a brunette, and no Dane l know has ever called him by his full name. (That's actually how l spot Americans writing about him online.)

I remember the old Disney series back in the 90's when I was a kid, yes I do enjoyed these series like The Gummie Bears, Tales Spin, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, The Wuzzles,Duck Tales, Darkwing Duck, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin , Hercules, Timon and Pumba, Gargoyles, House of Mouse, American Dragon Jake Long, Kim Possible and especially Mighty Duck. It's a shame 😔they're not on TV anymore but at least they're on Complete DVD collections to keep the memories alive. But I still wished that The Wuzzles , The Little Mermaid, Aladdin , Hercules, Timon and Pumba, Gargoyles, Might Ducks, House of Mouse, American Dragon Jake Long and Kim Possible were finally on complete DVD collection at last as they're the only ones that weren't on Complete DVD released🤞. I know some people say you can watch the old series on Disney+, but I don't have one and to be honest I prefer on complete DVD like Gummie Bears, Duck Tales, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers and Dark Wing Duck.

I remember watching this on the Disney Channel in the late mornings when I was a weeeeee lad. It made me connect with the characters from the movie(s) so much more. I absolutely loved it. Thank you for covering this. 🙏

HAHAHA! Of course I remember this show! I'm surprised anyone doesn't! Urchin stood out the most to me, because that's how I learned about sea urchins! The medley theme almost makes me cry when I hear it. So pretty. :) Ariel also looks the most like her mother. I remember Gabriella even though I didn't ever see that episode, because everyone on the playground knew and talked about her! But what I remember most are the books they released when this show was still on! There were regular books and comic books, and I read whatever I could get my hands on.

I LOVED THIS SHOW AND LOVE LITTLE MERMAID!!! I remembered every single episode that you showed on here. So glad this played when I was a little kid (I was born in 1994, so they kept it running for so long, but long enough to where I could cherish this show in my adult years).

That Hans Christian Anderson episode was a real treat, both for the Copenhagen statue shoutout and the ending's recommendation to find out more about Andersen and his fairy tales, including "The Little Mermaid," at your local library. I always imagined looking up an Andersen collection at Belle's bookstore from the "Sing Me a Story with Belle" show.

Only 31 episodes? God, childhood makes everything feel so much longer. I remember like 80 episodes across 5 years and most of the show featuring Urchin and Gabriella. I think I'll keep my distorted childhood memories alive and not rewatch the show. At least until I have a kid.

Yeah. I like to think to myself that this series, The Little Mermaid movie and The Little Mermaid 2 are canon. And Ariel's Beginning is just some fanmade movie.

I really liked the episode where Ariel unfreeze a bounch of dinosaurs from Antartic ice. But I do love that Charm episode too. And the best part of the final episode with Evil Manta is his Lullaby to his son. So GOOD!

I vividly remember the dinosaur episode where Ariel released a bunch of dinosaurs from ice and they destroyed a ton of stuff underwater. Apparently, according to this show, the T. rex can breathe underwater.

this was my favourite animated disney series of all time! my favourite episodes were stormy when ariel tries to tame a wild giant seahorse and when you wish upon a starfish where we meet gabriella! another lesser known episode i really like is the beast within which is like the werewolf mythos by with fish, flounder gets bitten and becomes a howling werefish.

Totally remember this!! My favorite episode was the one where Ariel gets cursed or something so every time she speaks/sings, terrible things start happening so she has to be silent almost the entire episode! That one freaked me out.

I do. They did manage to get Jodi Benson, Kenneth Mars, and Samuel E. Wright to reprise their roles. And with the release of Ariel's Beginning it completes a chronicle franchise. Starting with Ariel's Beginning, followed by the 1992 TV Series, the original 1989 movie and Return to the Sea.

'The first one.' So that's why it looks lower quality than Aladdin, Hercules, Tarzan, and Milo's Return (Which was supposed to be a show before getting canned due to poor sales of the movie, it was also supposed to have an actual sequel called 'Shards of Chaos'.) (The Show was gonna be called 'Team Atlantis', was gonna have a crossover with Gargoyles.).
