Have some great memories playing the original Need for Speed. By far my favourite has to be Shift 2 on the PS3. Was a brilliant game
@ToughMonkeyАй бұрын
Yes, this game takes me right back to the 90’s. It might not have had the outright fun that Sega Rally or Demolition Derby gave, but it felt like a proper real driving experience.

A good racing game isn't about collecting achievments in a boring open world, but driving in exotic cars with semi realistc physics on good tracks around the world with traffic 😜💪🏻

That's quite a purchase just to play one game....but I know the feeling. I knew I needed a better computer when TOCA Race Driver 2 came out and bought an entirely new PC that cost over £2k. Needless to say that was before I was married.

@ToughMonkeyАй бұрын
Thank you. I was the same. I owned the Saturn before I owned the PlayStation. In fact I had a beef with Sony as I thought at the time they were responsible for killing off Sega….but in hindsight we’ve learned that Sega did a pretty good job of that themselves.

I am reasonably sure there was an SE version, kind of like a demo, on PC, where I just spent a lot of time perfecting Coastal 2 It may have had one of the alpine point to point tracks too. Cloudy. I also liked the lack of an arcadey feel, Subbed for more!
@ToughMonkeyАй бұрын
You're correct. The PC version was described as a Special Edition. I didn't have the PC version of the original, but all of the subsequent releases up until Underground 2 I did have on PC. Thank you for the sub. You might not appreciate the video I'm currently editing, which is the original Ridger Racer. That couldn't be more arcadey if it tried! But I have plenty of sim content coming up over the next few weeks as I have a new sim rig being delivered shortly which I'm quite excited about.

Remember playing this both on PC and PS1, still got both of them and actually played some on the PS1 a few weeks ago. Wonderful game, the Viper was my absolute favourite and dream car of that time. =)
@ToughMonkeyАй бұрын
The Viper is rapid in this game. The footage in this video was after several hours of trying to complete each course and sometimes all it needed was using the Viper! I never had the PC version of the original but all the next ones I bought until Underground 2 were on PC.

I have loved it from day one and will always love it! I've played the demo in 1994 or 1995 on the Pentium 60 of my uncle and then the full version on my 1996 PC. It was one of my first 2 PC games, together with Microprose Grand Prix 2. Greatest of all Need For Speed titles.

Micropose Grand Prix 2. What a game! I’ve still got the original three games in the series along with the huge manual that came with GP2. More like an encyclopaedia.

Still got my Saturn copy but haven't played it in a long time. Was great seeing this again, cheers. Going to sit and watch your playthrough. My favourite NFS was High Stakes (Road Challenge in Europe) on the PC. Bought a wheel specifically for this game. The PS1 release was decent too.
@ToughMonkeyАй бұрын
I marginally preferred the Saturn version, but I'm not sure I can pinpoint why. I had the Saturn wheel which was awful. On the PC though I had the Logitech Momo Force back then when playing driving games. I still have it, but it's been replaced three times over.
@mattb9664Ай бұрын
I'd play the demo all the time at K B Toys, and eventually was able to get a copy for our PC once we finally got a Pentium 166 MHz in 1996. I remember using the Supra to spin launch some of the jumps in the game, and just blowing off the races to 'drive' around the car.
@ToughMonkeyАй бұрын
I didn't get my PC until summer 1998 I think it was....a few days after Windows 98 came out. Pentium 2 350Mhz MMX. I remember it had a Matrox Millennium 2D/3D graphics card which could run most things right up until Colin McRae Rally was released on PC and it needed an upgrade to a Voodoo 2 12MB card. Need For Speed 3 Hot Pursuit used to fly on it. I played the PS version a few days ago and it looks horrible compared to the PC version.
@okayhax7500Ай бұрын
The early need for speeds were so much fun, I wasted so much time on NFS 3 - Hot Pursuit (pc). The music on these games was phenomenal also, before EA introduced 'EA Trax' into all their games. RIP Saki Kaskas - (one the original music composers for the games).
@ToughMonkeyАй бұрын
That original Hot Pursuit was superb on PC. I lost a lot of my life to that too.
@geminielectroАй бұрын
I love the first NFS, but on 3DO. It has better textures, no warping, better colors and it's more a simulation game. Some would say that it's because the PS is faster than the 3DO, except that there's a hack on 3DO that pushes car speeds beyond those on PS. Which proves that it's a game design choice. What's more, I find it less playable on PS because you're quick to hit a car in a straight line that you didn't see coming. Also, there are cinematics showing our main opponent in the game. This adds a little more immersion.

Sweet. My first Windows computer was a 350Mhz Pentium 2 MMX I got a few weeks after Windows 98 released. Prior to that I had a 386 I used for word processing but had a mighty game called Gorilla on it. A maths based game where you calculate angle and velocity to lob a banana across a city scape at another gorilla. Heady days.

I remember playing this as a kid. Don't remember the graphics being so horrible.
@ToughMonkeyАй бұрын
Probably because it came out only 6 months into the PlayStation’s life in the west and everything looked awesome to us then. If you played it on PC the graphics were always better than console, provided you had a half decent graphics card.
@yuriythebestАй бұрын
Playing it on a CRT made it look better. What also helped was that there was nothing to compare it to really. Oh, the graphics are worse than NFS 3/4? Too bad, those aren't released yet! Back when I played it on my Pentium1, this was the first racing game for me that had such "Good" graphics, and I'd play and zone out for hours. Overall though, I think NFS peaked at NTS4:HS

I built a display with a cavity that I could push the cables through and hide them. Each controller is mounted with a small bit of high-strength Velcro so I can remove them and replace them as and when I need them. This was how I made it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnzCaIaartqHmaM

I do prefer the Saturn version and it's the one I had first. I decided to go with the PS version as I'd not played it much and wanted to see how it compared to the Saturn. It is interesting that on those rare occasions a game was released on both PS and Saturn it was quite often better on the Saturn. It's just a shame it was such a pig to programme games on and developers ended up running a mile from it.
