I don't know why, but I put Bill Bixby and Roddy McDowall in the same category for myself as actors I really enjoyed even though they weren't dashing or hunky male leads. They seemed like great "common man" actors who I could root for even if they didn't typically beat up bad guys through hand-to-hand combat or gunfights. Their passings really marked an end of an era as I don't think anyone has replaced them for me ever since. I went ape for the TV series too, and I'm thankful for good ol' MeTV letting me enjoy it again, not to mention being grateful to you for always bringing back good memories from the past. I'm not fond of growing old, not only for the personal aches and pains both physical and emotional, but for the way TV entertainment never seems to be as good as the things from my youth. You're a blessing for the way you remind me of "the good stuff." Thank you very much!

@@jdsundstrom -- You're very welcome! And I very much agree about growing old. And I just remembered a contemporary actor who is in my "Bill Bixby / Roddy McDowell" category: Martin Freeman, who plays Watson on the Sherlock TV series and Bilbo in The Hobbit movies. He's the closest thing to my modern-day Bill Bixby or Roddy McDowell type of actor. I hope some blessings come your way in response to how your videos bless your viewers! :-)

Steve Numerator , I can see that. I think that earlier in their careers, they played the same types of roles.
@mysticindigo5 жыл бұрын
greg garner , I think the common man feeling for Bixby really is his early stuff: My Favorite Martian, The Courtship of Eddie's Father... I think he was more "likeable/approachable" in those roles. While I couldn't see McDowell in the role of Eddie's father, I could see him playing Bixby's role in My Favorite Martian. The reverse is true also. I could see Bixby in McDowell's role in Fantastic Journey. I could also see him. I could also see him in Jared Martin's role too. Bixby has that kind of believe range... That said, he totally change the feel of the show😉
@stevenumerator5 жыл бұрын
@greg garner -- I knew when I wrote my comment that I could not find exactly the right wording for what I wanted to convey. I was trying to say that Bill Bixby and Roddy McDowell (and Martin Freeman as I mentioned in another reply to Dave) are all actors who do not strike me as the typical action hero or romantic/hot guy who is often cast as the lead actor. "Common" is not exactly what I wanted to convey, but I decided to post my comment anyway. I definitely agree that Bill Bixby was classy and polished!

This was one of my all time favorite T.V. shows! I was going through a very bad time in my life then. I was being severely bullied at school. My grandmother, who had Alzheimers, and was reliving some of her worst life moments. My mom was torn between trying to take care of Grandma, all her church jobs, and the house. My dad had an especially bad commanding officer, who delighted in making life miserable for those in his command. I regularly retreated to my room, only emerging for dinner. I also emerged for this program! It got me through that time! For years after, I searched for recordings of it. Then Christmas 2000, my dad bought the DVD for me for as a gift along with a player to play it on. The DVD player immediately ate the first DVD of the collection! We had to take it to the store to get the DVD back. They had to break open the player! However, I got my DVD, and watched and rewatched it over and over!

Dave, my TV sweetheart! You just made my night. I developed a huge crush on Roddy McDowell as a young girl and carried that torch...well, I still do, for Mr. McDowell and James Garner. I remember vividly, as a kid, seeing the drive-in marquee in my home town advertising The Planet of the Apes, and my dad taking us to see it later in the week. Then, years later, as a tweenager, daddy loaded us all up in his Plymouth Sports Fury to go to the Mustang drive-in to see all five movies, dusk to dawn. I was the only one in car who made it through all five movies. Good times!! I remember Mr. McDowell from How Green Was My Valley, Batman, when he appeared on The Carol Burnett's Show in his ape makeup and danced with her onstage, when he appeared on Columbo, The Planet of the Apes TV show, and so many other movies and programs. No matter what the role, he was the consummate performer. Did you know that he was the original Mordred in the Broadway production of Camelot? I can only imagine what delightful impishness he imbued that role with. For a bit of fun, look up the clips of Carol Burnett and Roddy McDowell, especially the one word response sketch. It's a treasure! As I write this I'm watching the Carol Burnett Show clip with Mr. McDowell in his ape makeup. I can't thank you enough for these delightful forays into the past. Sooooo many good memories. The next time you're in " Mayberry" the pork chop sandwiches are on me.

I loved this show when I was a kid! And you can easily say that this show was "Planet of the Apes Canon" just by saying that these particular astronauts landed in a different time period before all the humans went mute or perhaps crossed a wormhole into an alternate timeline with a different history or something like that. There could be several histories out there. The books that "Planet of the Apes" was based on had the apes driving around in cars and airplanes. This is one of those shows that I literally have not seen since I was a little kid and that's been virtually impossible to find anywhere, not in stores, not for video rental, anywhere. It only exists in my memory of being a kid and I just remember loving the hell out of it. I'm now kind of scared of finding episodes online or possible DVD's of it now because I'm not sure how it's going to hold up to the childhood memories.
@jdsundstrom5 жыл бұрын
A lot of shows don't hold up well against memories. Still, I think if you go into Planet of the Apes with modest expectations, you will enjoy it....if only for McDowell's great performance as Galen.

A friend of mine who had a flair for fan fiction "suggested" that, after the nuclear war/pandemic destroyed humanity, apes rose up all throughout the world or, in this case, the former United States. However, because current technology was also destroyed, apes were separated by geography and inherently remained in their own areas, ignorant of the existence of others. Now, it can be considered unclear what year Virdon and Burke crashlanded back on Earth. The year reads as 3085 but Burke speculates that they could have gone further into the future. Indeed, that year couldn't be right because the book they found earlier shows New York City already in the past year of 2503. If that's the case, then we are to believe that humanity was destroyed then dominated by apes who built up their own society and customs all in the tiny span of a couple of centuries. Therefore, it can be surmised that if Taylor and his crew had crashed in former California instead of New York, they would have been wearing burlap instead of loinclothes.

I believe Roddy McDowall was the only actor from the movies that appeared in the TV show. As you mentioned, his character was named Galen instead of Cornelius. I was a fan of Roddy ever since.

IF I remember correctly a couple actors who played apse in the films also did the series! Claude Akins for example.

Hey Dave. My channel used to be Lost Age Comics. Renamed it. I've always seen the PotA saga as a multiverse. The awesome animated series, this series, and the hint of it being a multiverse with Burton's film is all apart of something larger for me. I just wish I lived when the original figures were out.

Hi Dave, we had this in the UK! Great show when I was a youngster. And I loved Roddy McDowell too, he was always relaxing to watch somehow. He was great in The Fantastic Journey towards the end of the 1970s. A school holiday morning programme in Wales.

I remember when I was a kid in the 70s they used to have an NBC Studios Tour near LA. I remember only a couple things since that time. One was seeing Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show set, and the other was seeing the Planet of the Apes masks on display. You say it aired on CBS but this was at NBC where I saw these. I sure do hope it’s not my memory playing tricks on me.
@jdsundstrom5 жыл бұрын
Your memory probably isn't playing tricks on you...at least as far as the tour goes. Still, I am certain that The Planet of the Apes TV series aired on CBS originally.
@kamandi13625 жыл бұрын
As with Man From Atlantis, this series was hugely popular here in the UK; it might even have been the most-watched show of the week. We were aghast when it was cancelled so soon. The cartoon series was some consolation for us kids, though. Watching it now it really does have a great premise. It's basically The Fugitive but on the Planet of the Apes and with a Roddy McDowell chimp as a companion. I wish it'd get a Blu-ray release, like the films did.

Great video, Dave! Very well done! I've greatly enjoyed all the incarnations of the original Planet of the Apes run, including the live action TV series, and the animated TV series. I came across the DVD Planet of the Apes collection at FYE several years ago and snapped it right up! I swear I could hear the music in my mind as I was paying for it at checkout. Two items of trivia that might be interesting for some: in Planet of the Apes there is Chimpanzee veterinarian named Dr. Galen. Prior to Planet of the Apes Linda Harrison was in 3 episodes of the 1966 Batman TV series. First in the 2 part Joker Goes to School story as Cheerleader #2. And later in the 2nd part of the Bookworm story, starring Special Guest Villain Roddy McDowell, as Miss Gotham City.

I went to that original all-day Planet of the Apes marathon! It must have lasted over 10 hours with all the breaks and trailers. I remember entering in the morning and exited after dark, and I left in an altered state of consciousness, and it might have been a school night! 1. Planet of the Apes 2. Beneath the Planet of the Apes 3. Escape from the Planet of the Apes 4. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes 5. Battle for the Planet of the Apes

I remember thinking that the two leads in the TV show were Starsky and Hutch. I mean I literally thought that Starsky and Hutch had gotten transported from their hot rod muscle car to the Planet of the Apes. Though incorrect, I don’t think the resemblance was any accident.

I hadn't thought about that...but holy cow, Evan! You're right!

The first time I saw the Planet of the Apes TV series would have to have been in syndication, probably sometime in the mid to late 70’s. I was four years old in 1974 and would have been to young to remember it then . For me, Starsky and Hutch came first but as for the actual chicken and egg argument, the Planet of the Apes TV series was first. I thought it was a cool show but it was probably too scary for me at the time. I remember for about a year, going to bed in fear every night. I was afraid I’d wake up and find that I had been transported to the Planet of the Apes just like what happened to Starsky and Hutch.

Oh wow. I do remember the first time I saw this mini series. I think I was eight years old. It may have been on some other time of the day, but I was able to see it in a time slot that was before or after “Creature Feature “. Every Saturday night I watched TV from 11pm to one in the morning. I was always to bed at a reasonable time during the week, but Saturday night was my, up late by myself TV time. I was fascinated by the planet of the ape movies, and I still am. Even now, I see the social and political mindset of the time it was made. Later in life, I would get more into the changed timelines that would be staple in science fiction. This mini series sticks in my mind as one of the very good ones.

Do I Remember 'Planet Of The Apes'!?! This show was one of my 1st Rituals! EVERY week my best friend & his kid brother would get together & watch the show! He lived across the street & we'd take turns playing host! Tried to outdo each other with creative snacks! Thank You for the nostalgia boost!!! & YES... I recall Mr. Harper shifting to one of my other favs, Land of the Lost! You may recall I made a Fan Fantasy Series CROSSOVER of PotA & LotL! Ape troopers would lasso Grumpy & slug it out with Sleestaks! One last thing... Liberator did air, as I remember seeing it on TV! I Remember their description of do-it-yourself gas-mask kits was worked into my Army Games when I was a kid!

Interesting fact about the POTA ending: it was "borrowed". Rod Serling had gotten the idea for the final shot from a sf magazine, Astonishing Fiction November, 1941. There was a picture depicting two figures in loinclothes approaching the ruins of Lady Liberty. See The Science in Science Fiction by Peter Nicholls.

Within the last few months, I caught this show and it reminded me that I liked it better than I remembered. Mark Lenard was in it, and I always enjoyed his work. Roddy, of course, was so much fun to see and he said this was his fave ape to play of the three he did. LOL -- you reminded me but I did once go to the drive-in for the Ape marathon, all 5 movies, one after another. I loved it! Back to the series, I believe it was the death of Arthur Jacobs that worked against the series' success, or lack of it. I think he died before the show's development really got off the ground.

Roddy McDowall started his acting career in the 1930’s as a very young kid. He was a true “master of masters”‼️ multiple award winner...... In the movie “Class of 1984”, he plays a teacher who looses his mind and goes nuts. “Dead Of Winter “, “Confirm Or Deny” “On The Sunny Side” Are some titles available on DVD, that are pretty rare movies, that are really good. There are so many, including so many classics. He can and did play just about every type of character in almost every genre . One of my personal all time favorite actors‼️‼️

Dave Sundstrom Yep. I have 19 of his movies, And a very small bit part in a 1938 movie called “Hey! Hey! U.S.A! Featuring another actor I really like- Tommy Bupp. He and his brother,Sonny, were trained at the Meglin School ( as were Jackie Cooper, Judy Garland, And many of the really great child actors of the day. Tommy has one of the nastiest voices, but knew just how to use it. He could sing,dance, and played a couple of instruments. He had a very unique way of animating while he sang. Anyway...... 📻🙂

I don't remember the TV show, but I did go and see the first movie at a local theater when I lived in Cleveland. Actually, the movie theater was in Lakewood, a few blocks past W. 117th St that was the border between Cleveland and Lakewood. I lived on W.112th St. and was within walking distance and the theater tickets were rather cheap back then.
