English is not a difficult language, especially for beginners. And almost all "difficulties" you mentioned are not difficult: All languages have many idioms; English has much less exceptions than most languages have; the phrasal verbs are much easier than German separable prefixes that often puzzle you when you reach the end of the sentence, and they are very similar to what we have in my native Russian - verb prefixes modify verb meaning in the same way as English adverbs; contractions and reductions are simple because there are only a few of them. The difficult spelling is unpleasant but not critical - you only need to learn some words twice. But there is ONE REAL PROBLEM in English. And it is huge. It is LISTENING COMPREHENSION. And statistics shows that students' listening comprehension of English is much worse than of other European languages. For example, I perfectly understand you and most of the documentaries, but none of the movies. I know 5 times less German words than English words but I understand lyrics of German songs better than lyrics of English songs. The reasons are: 1. A great lot of short words differing by a single sound 2. A great lot of homonyms, and especially homophones, among short words 3. A lot of vowels, many of which are very similar 4. A great lot of accents even within the Great Britain that affect, first of all, these vowels (e.g. American "lock" = Britain "luck"), let alone the nightmare they make with vowels in Australia and New Zealand 5. The general tendency to join these short words into long chunks when speaking, and at all to shorten everything possible (I can't hear the 'glottal t' however much I try!) 6. The terrible ambiguity and lack of redundancy in Grammar: (a) you have only 3 endings: -s, -ing, -ed - each with several meanings; (b) the same word often can be a noun, verb or adjective; (c) there is often no way to distinguish between nouns, verbs and adjectives other than by their position in the sentence. As a result of this, you often cannot grasp the sentence structure (and consequently, its meaning) if you misunderstood a single word in it. Miss one word - and you fail with the whole sentence! For the contrast: In German you can usually get the sentence structure by purely grammatical means and then, if you miss some words, you can guess them and stay in tune with the speaker.

Just to answer the question in the title of this video. No, I don’t think English is the worst at all! In fact, except for phrasal verbs, everything you mentioned exists in other languages in one way or another. I think these struggles are par for the course when learning a new language. I’m just glad English has no gendered nouns. Can you imagine having gendered nouns and phrasal verbs in one language?! That should be against the law!

Input, I had to check this word in dictionary... So, Mr Bob, my mother tongue is portuguese and I can say we have a lot of contractions, reductions, exceptions in grammar, and some idiomatic expressions. But we have few phrasal verbs and the way we write is very similiar to the way we speak. But, on the other hand, our verbs has got many tenses and aspect. Look at this verb "Estudar", which means "Study": >> estudo, estudas, estuda, estudamos, estudais, estudam, estudei, estudaste, estudou, estudamos, estudastes, estudaram, estudava, estudavas, estudavamos, estudaveis, estudavam, estudara, estudaras, estudaramos, estudareis, estude, estudes, estudem, estudemos, estudais, estudarei, estudarás, estudarão, estudaremos, estudareis, estudaria, estudarias, estudariamos, estudarieis, estudariam, estudasse, estudasses, estudassemos, estudasseis, estudassem, estudar, estudardes... All of there words above represent only one verb and its tenses and aspects. Of course we don't use not even the half of it in everyday portuguese. Howerver, the use of our verbs is more complex than in English.

What I have learnt from this video is that English learners should do lots of reading, listening and speaking. Learners are highly recommended to listen to music, watch videos in order to expose English. The more input you get, the more you expose yourself to English words, idioms, etc. the more your brain will remember them. That's ıt. Hi Bob, How are you doing? I missed you, dear teacher, I haven't watched your videos for about 40 days, because I was studying in order to pass an Italian Exam. By the way, about this subject: The difficulty to learn English. In my opinion you're right when you say that English is hard, but not the hardest language to learn. I'm Brazilian and every razon pointed out from you is very true, but it could be much more difficult if I try to learn Chinese. On the other hand, Italian is easier to me, but it is because my own language is much more like Italian than English. But, if you ask me: Which grammar and structure are easier in order to learn, English or Italian? Without a doubt, English. I believe that, for those who speak a language completely different from both, as exemple Japanese, English is easier than Italian. By the way, I'm not fluent in both English and Italian, so sorry about my mistakes ok ? Thanks a lot for everything

Greeting from Japan, Bob. I totally agree with you that English is a crazy and weird language. However that’s why I’m interested in English! It doesn’t matter if there are words having two different pronunciations! All I have to do is to get used to English by reading and writing, speaking, hearing, and typing! It’s a sad story that there’s no environment to speak in English, so I consider myself thinking in English, without Japanese translations! So this clip is helping me as well, Bob. I’m looking forward to seeing your next video.

Hello, Bob and hi to all Bob's subscribers! I should mention 2 other very annoying aspects about English learning. The First is that some people stop learning English and use it to run international businesses and we have to adjust to their native accents and word-stressing, which makes it really energy-sucking. The Second is underestimation by the tutors. You may already have nice pronunciation, native-like accent and vocabulary, but for them you are a beginner, and this makes a good speaker shy and embarrassed to start speaking...

If study English for longer time, you are able to understand contractions and redactions easily. How is it going? How's = contraction. Americans often let the letter T at the end od that word silent. That's why this phrase is pronunced like this. Howsigoin. If you know these rules, you wouldn't have any problems with understanding.

You are quite correct. The more you study and the more you hear these contractions and reductions they just sound normal after a while! 😎⏰📷

A car should have gotten a ticket for speeding behind you (after the cat alert). Wow! I can't believe that he was in the allowed speed zone. Believe me, English is not that hard as Hungarian. In Hungarian you can say an affirmative sentence and you can say the same sentence adding "not" and both sentences mean the same! It is like French when you don't use he or she but you can distinguish the meaning from the situation. I hoe you come up wit a great topic on Friday!

I'm really going to have to try learning a little bit of Hungarian at some point. I know the wife of a colleague of mine speaks it. I should ask for a few lessons and see how challenging it is! 😎⏰📷

The worst languages to learn are the ones where the native speakers can’t stand beginners practicing with them.

That's why I'm a huge fan of the Natural Way. You don't have to worry about these aspects of the language. They'll come naturally to you. You just need to have a leap of faith, let the time do its job and have fun. Simple and easy. I have done it with English and French. The results are amazing!

I don't know if English is the worst language to learn or not because I've not leaned another foreign language yet. English is definitely difficult to me. It's a totally different system with my native language. We don't have something like plural and tense in my language expect phrasal verb. I believe your 2 pieces of advice are helpful for me. I have to do my best to input and practice it. Thank you so much for replying almost all my comments !
