Really helpful video! Just found a bargain for a really nice ceramic pot without drainage holes, so I’m glad to know they’re not as necessary as I was made to believe. Thanks a lot!

Very good point here. I have a few planters without drainage. It pays to pay attention to your plants. In my opinion, it's just good to hang out with your plants anyway.

Philodendron cordatum and green pothos does really decent without drainage. Swampy to dry soil is okay. I switched most my plants to drainage holes, with a larger outer container without drainage.

Thats a good way to do it as well, this allows the soil to wick up the water for a period of time. I know most peoples homes are very low humidity so sometimes it can be beneficial

My boyfriend got us drill attachments to make variously sized drainage holes because I generally prefer drainage holes, but, I am thinking of trying my cane begonia in a non draining pot when it is time to repot! :)

I don't know why but I had the urge to plant a tomato. So I found a glass container and planted it. I didn't know how much water to put so I just put until all the sand was damp (cause its glass so I could see it) after one week or so I saw that it had started growing. I almost thought someone had added something to it. I continued watering when it was dry and now my plant is really like thriving. But my mom said that plants need drainage so I was worried my plant would die. But I could already see the roots at the bottom of the glass. Anyway I'm probably typing this for myself.

I throw good food grade plastic water bottles in larger containers without holes then add soil and plants. It also helps to fill in and use less soil than really necessary for big pots.

I actually have a few plants in pots without drainage holes. Most of my other plants are in pots with drainage holes or nursery pots with drainage and a cover pot. I've been bad about over watering in the past and I'm trying to get better about it, so far so good.

Phew! I just got several new pots. None came with drainage holes! I started to wonder if they were necessary. Why would they sell them like that otherwise. If I over water I can always use the chopstick method to separate and help dry things out.

If water is sitting in the drainage area should I empty it out? Does sitting water stimulate the roots to head to the bottom? I don't know.

Thanks for this video. Also one more thing do you have suggestions or is it a no brainer do you have to use Top Soil for Pot indoor plants? Or its got to be really the Potting mix soil? Can you make a video on this prolly same plant but different soil and then see if its gonna grow faster to which soil. Thanks man
@ExpeditionHomestead

This is all depending on the plant because each one may have different moisture requirements. Typically I will recommend an indoor mix because they will be free of pests 👨‍🌾

Great vid! How do I plug the 1 inch drainage hole in the center of my cement planters? How best to do this and what do I use?
@FishTetris
@FishTetris 3 жыл бұрын
I used bottle caps and clear, aquarium safe silicone to seal some drainage holes-just put the cap over the hole on the inside of the pot and put the silicone around it. (Aquarium safe silicone is best I think, since other silicone caulking could have anti-fungal or other chemicals that could harm the plant!)

I’ve got a 20 year old snake plant in a plastic pot. There is a hole, but since it’s an arid climate plant it does fine.

Yes! Unfortunately most indoor plants are killed by overwatering from what I’ve seen in the comments and from what I see friends do when they ask me what’s wrong with their plants. Some say they water more than once a week which is way too often in most cases

Yes outdoors it can really help because of how fast the water will evaporate from the hanging pot.

The plants you showed were immature. Show some plants you have had more than6 months. Drainage is better because the plants are confined in those pots.

Succulents don't need a lot of water, but other plants, need more water , 3 weeks it's a long time with no water for some. Every plant is different.
