Hey that is my dad flying the aircraft! Thank you for the amazing cockpit view of a crazy landing He's was one of the most skilled and professional instructor pilot to fly in the STOL sector here in Nepal with almost 25 years and of experience and 18,000 hours of flight time. Im surprised he let you film the landing, he's said "no camera in the cockpit as it might be distracting". I remember when I was very small, he used to take me with him in almost every flight and back then in 1997-1998, Lukla airport was not paved and the aircrafts were the earlier versions of DHC twin otters. Sadly, he retired after suffering from a severe stroke in 2019, and the company retired their fleet of DO 228 after this misfortune, but he is still healthy and loves aviation and loves us all. It's great to see so many positive comments about his flight handling skills, and they truly were. I noticed some people thought that this was illegal and others thinking he was touching down too fast. But the reality is that the weather was nominal as they have eyes on the ground as well, and the crew are aware of the cloud type,height,etc making it predictable in some instances. Where as the speed looks fast due to the clouds present because the aircraft only looks fast as it is flying through the clouds but if you zoom in and look closely, we can somewhat make out that the air speed indicator shows something between 80-100 knots which is nominal as well. theres another video of him as well, have a look and show some support ! kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4C9hImcmKmhfJo Thank you once again for the amazing video !

Holy Shmoly!! I have seen a few videos of Lukla but I think this appears to be the fastest arrival I have seen from 'in-cockpit'. That is the most extraordinary place to plant a plane! Beautifully executed, but then again at Lukla, you only get one chance, so the crew have slightly more of a vested interest in getting it right first time! No missed approaches and 'go-arounds' here. That end wall sure comes up fast, even with full reverse and firm braking. Great vid, many thanks.

It looks very cloudy and from the runway in sight to touch down it only takes about 5 seconds and it seems very little flare...really amazing...

That captain had to be positioning his aircraft by reference to something other than the runway. I know video cameras are not as good as the human eye but there was no sight of the runway until a few seconds before touchdown.

It has a GPS. So, probably the HSI is coupled to that. Even if there is not a published approach procedure, the pilots can create pseudo approaches in the GPS which can be used as a guidance. This is a guess ofcourse.

Flying in Lukla is under VFR rules. And this is exactly NOT how to fly by VFR rules... A Goma Air crashed in Lukla because the pilot tried to land under similar circumstances. Another one, a Tara air flight to Jomsom, the pilot flying under VFR rules used his common sense by going into clouds crashed killing everyone... Since then, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal changed the rules for domestic flying that not only visibility is required at Origin and Destination airport but along the route too. But what surprised me was if you read the VFR rules of flying thats whats its all about. Matter of fact, if you read crash investigation report for most of the crashes in Nepal, this video is a great example: Macho pilots flying in clouds when they aren't supposed to under VFR rules. Glad you got there safely! :)

lukla is a visual airport. that condition is below vfr min condition. airport should be clouse with that weather. extremely danger landing. several fatal accidents in the past with the same weather conditions.

I would not like the idea that the pilot for this flight only has a 2 bar rating for such a dangerous flight.
@ZK-APA6 жыл бұрын
hawkeye0248 2 bar doesn’t always mean that he is inexperienced. Its more of a company hirarchy. Besides such airports are generally always captain flown, so the f/o has a much relaxed responsibility.
@brajn8724 жыл бұрын
The pilot flying has 4 bars if you watch properly, It would not make sense that a co pilot would be authorized to land in such terrain and weather. The captain flying this aircraft is a veteran pilot with more than 25 years of experience, if you have any second guesses look at his interview kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4C9hImcmKmhfJo

So, I’m not one to gripe about typos. I think people that do so have small peckers and even smaller intellects. With that being said … I gotta be straight-up honest and say that even I am offended by your lack of effort here. I mean, even a bad spellchecker would have shut down the computer before allowing you to send that.
