A few days ago, I opened the case of my grandfather's dobro, which hadn't been touched in about 25 years, so I learned how to restring it and found your video series. I grew up listening to him play before I knew anything about music, and he would play Don Williams and Hank Sr. songs. I'm glad I have chance for his instrument to sing again, and your videos are wonderful and encouraging. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.

Just started playing at a bluegrass jam and more guitars than anything so got the old resonator off the wall and started with your video, its a big blast. But the instrument as a bad rattle on certain notes. Gotta see whats going on with that, then be back.

Hello miss Gardner, My name is Jim I live in northeast Oregon I turned 62 and started picking up the Dobro Anyway I'm wondering if you could do 1 or 2 videos on playing in a flat key like B-flat what are the accenting chords that you would use I am trying to learn closer walk with thee in a B-flat so I would love to have a video on that Also how do I subscribe and get tablature 'like born in the city' that I just watch you doing it's a wonderful piece

totally! good idea on Bb. You can capo at 3rd fret and play like you're in G but there's also some open stuff that's good in that key. I haven't tabbed out Born in the City yet, but I will! checkout abbiegardner.com for my free Woodshed tab :)

Love this tutorial, Abbie! Would you say the bass lines are in the call and response style or is this some other structure? If it’s another form of structure, does it have a name (the structure of the notes) that I can research more? I absolutely love the whole sound and you’re uber talented writing something of this magnitude.

Thanks so much Ol Grey! It feels more like a cowboy bass line to me, though I doubt that's an official term. When you play the whole line it's not call & response structure, but if you can use it that way if you break off to do a lead line answering the first part of the bass melody! Fun and flexible! :)

I’m having trouble with the muted chop. Not so much with the thumb chop, but with the return finger chop. Can’t seem to get it sufficiently muted. Which strings are you hitting?

Hey Paul! You might try muting with your left hand with the return finger chop. You won't need much pressure either, it's a real light touch, and I'm generally hitting those top two strings on the return. Almost like just brushing across them. Good luck!

Paul, I have tried for years on guitar and resonator to palm mute and found my right hand is stupid so I have had to learn some left handed stuff instead.
