When my 2000 FXDWG arrived at the dealer I requested the screaming eagle filter set up with the K&N reusable filter. I saw this video and went to look seriously at what I had. Lo and behold, there is a metal tube that connects the two banjo bolts. Nothing goes inside the air filter. There is a rubber hose that exits from the rear most banjo and disappears behind the rear cylinder. Way back then, the mechanic did me a huge favor and I didn't even know it. My old Harley has NOT been drinking oil since the day it left the dealer! I don't know where it came from or who made it, but it is professionally made and it does the job.

As it comes out as barely visible vapour you would think it wouldn't be such an issue with the running/tuning and quite likely emissions. But as the engine gets older and starts to wear out the vapor will increase. car manufacturers run the crank breather into the cam/valve cover I'm sure HD can do this its just the way HD have done it and plan to continue to do so and cost cutting...In 2020 sportsters are no longer sold in the EU and UK due to their poor emissions, it was stated that its not worth HD up grading the emissions its just easier to delete them from the range....

I wondered if crankcase pressure is cause , and shouldn't that be addressed first and like yours solve end result!
@trekbsg3 жыл бұрын
@@kpnomad7 An internal combustion engine is basically an air pump, when pistons move up & down the air on top of the piston isn't the only air being displaced, the air underneath the piston is also affected as the piston moves up & down which is why some type of crankcase ventilation is required in order not to build up too much air pressure(& vacuum) into the crankcase, the E.P.A. requires crankcase "gasses" to be routed and vented back into the air intake track of the engine in order to burn off any unburnt gasses(that may slip by the piston rings) to help reduce hydrocarbon pollution, the problem that Harleys have with oil in the air cleaner is that the crankcase vents are being overworked by the excess pressure of ever increasing engine volumes and with the extra air pressure the oil suspended in the crankcase vents doesn't have enough time to separate from the air and return back to the oiling system, the hope of adding an additional point of ventilation into say the dipstick apparatus such as the feuling is to decrease the overall excess pressure from the system itself helping the overall efficiency of the ventilation thereby giving the suspended oil more time to separate.

I did an S&S Stealth filter just like yours and after joining the hoses with a T ran it back to the filler spout on my 2010 Dyna. Removed the filler spout, drilled and tapped the spout for a hosetail and put a length of hose with a T in it - one for the head breathers,one for the filler spout and the third (with a breather valve in it) up to a catch tank. **** I think the most important thing to tell people though is not to over-fill the oil tank - on a cold engine with the bike on it's jiffy stand only fill the tank so the level is one third the way up from the low level up toward the full level because the bike is upright when you are riding it and the oil expands when it is warm, so the level if set as I said - one third - will be just about at the full mark when the bike is upright and warm. Always remeber that when the engine sits after use, all the oil in the engine runs down into the crank and cam compartments and can measure about a quart of oil. When you start the bike, the pump sends that oil back to the tank and if you have over-filled it then it goes from the tank to the engine via the vent passageways, the crank then churns the oil up and creates an overly heavy 'oil-mist' that then carries-over into your inlet/air filter and spoils your engine.****

So Doc, I love this idea and want to do it to my 2019 Ultra Limited. It makes sense NOT to suck oil mist into the airbox - 1) it shortens the life of the air filter and 2) dirty oil mist going into my cylinders can cause additional carbon build up and that dirty mist is basically doing the exact opposite of what the air filter box is supposed to do - that is, keep outside contaminates OUT of the burn process and have only CLEAN air for combustion. So now the big question - would doing a mod like that void your factory warranty? I obviously don't want to void my warranty. I mean, if you did a poor job on the mod and it sucked in a set screw that you used to block the stock ports then of course harley would not cover it. but it doesnt really effect anything on the bike so i'm not sure why it would void a factory warranty.

@@turninmonyin2noise978 I dont have issue. Only when you get really big pistons making high pressure in your crank case and then burning that oil. Where does Polaris send there oily mist from crankcase? Copy them if they have a better way. Postive crankcase ventilation is what Harley uses. You can't vent to atmosphere like older vehicles.

I have an 04 Heritage that I "T"d off the air cleaner. Instead of a catch can I cut a three inch copper tube and beveled half of it to fit up against the exhaust pipe just past my floor board and SSTL hose clamped it. Used fuel hose to hook it up to the "T". Now I'm burning it after combustion. No drips or smoke being such a small amount.

did this on my 2016 RK, ran two tubes to the bottom of the back plate of throttle body. tee them together, drilled a hole in the back plate, then short tube to an elbow to the catch can which sits between the tappet blocks, very snug, works great, my TB sucks fresh air only, no more HOT oily air,bike runs much better.

After ruining two pair of jeans to blow by oil, I installed an external catch can in front of the engine. Two years later, I have not any more issues.

Did this on my 2015 deluxe for around 10 bucks, using fuel line directly to nipple fitting off rocker cover to one metal inline gas filter. One side to each end of gas filter. Drilled a 1/4 inch hole in filter to release pressure. Hole facing up...difference in performance is noticeable. No drilling of backplate necessary

I built my own catch can out of a bunch of little brass fittings from the hardware store it works great and I've never had a problem with it since I put it on I put a valve on the bottom of it so I could drain it into a cup and throw it on my firewood
@billcarp35232 жыл бұрын
You'll get more water build-up in the catch can than oil. So the water - was before - going into your cylinder. Not much, but hey, why have any at all? Glad I put the catch can and breather on my bike. No oil leaking out the bottom of my air filter.

On my 09 road King classic instead of paying the ridiculous price Harley was asking for the bolts I hollowed out out some 3/8 threaded rod put two hoses to it and ran it underneath the bike. All told less than $10. As for drippage I rarely see any on the ground underneath my bike unless I put it up for the winter time come spring I will see a drop about the size of a dime.

My ole man uses an oil air separator canister (mounted above the engine and plumbed with the breather hose to dryer inlet fitting upward vertical so scavenged oil can return gradually while the clean(er) crank case air charge passes through to the outlet at the top, hose runs to one side of the breather plate, the other is capped off, bike runs cooler, according to my right ankle and lower calf muscle, no more spot buildup in the manifold or carb boot, a slight sheen inside the hypercharger but nothing like the Exxon Valdez Slick left by the OEM plumbing, less oil consumption as well, did notice about a 10° oil temp increase in stop and go traffic, he cooled it down almost back to normal with an off idle fuel mixture adjustment, which also smoothed out slight shudder during slow twist gradual acceleration

One thing to be careful of, make sure there aren’t any low spots in your breather line. If you do short trips below freezing quite a bit of condensation occurs. One brand had a recall. The breather could act as a p trap, and if it froze, blow by pressure would build up and blow oil out of engine seals.
@jackrose69962 жыл бұрын
That's some solid advice. It really doesn't get that cold where I live very often, and I wouldn't have put much thought into that situation. I'll take it into consideration. Thanks.

Doc, completely agree about keeping the oily air out of the t-body BUT.....your customer's method looks like the rubber breather tubes will get pinched and flattened by the air cleaner element where it seals to the backing plate.

Excellent ideas. And yes, you must be very careful when working in the intake air path to make sure nothing can come loose and end up in a cylinder or both. Had that happen on a newly rebuilt shovel a long time ago. I got in a hurry putting it together and didn't stake the butterfly valve screws on a super B after re-bushing the throttle shaft. I managed to screw up both cylinders. Not good.

I'm still not clear on this, and hope someone can help here. Is the breather to relieve crankcase pressure? Or in other words, would a crankcase breather do the same thing? Or should you get both a head breather and a crank breather?
@phillipternullo49342 жыл бұрын
Like the idea of the catch can . Have seen this mod where they run the oil back into the engine . Don’t like that because all engines condensate and if you run the engine hard that oil can get milky and you wouldn’t want that back inside you’re motor .

Hello Doc, since the last oil change in my original 2017 Street Glide Special M8 I found a lot of oil residue in the air filter box and some drops on the exhaust. Then during a ride in the mountains the check engine light came on, signaling errors P0152 P0522 P0523 The oil pressure was correct in the radio display. The engine oil they had put on me was a 50 mineral, in my opinion, poor quality. I reset the errors replaced with a 100% synthetic 10-60 Motul 7100 Can I put a freer air filter on the original bike? To eliminate these misting problems, I have also seen the Feuling oil dipsticks and the Trask ventilated transmission cover, can they be valid solutions? Thank you for your always very interesting videos, unfortunately I'm Italian, I don't understand everything..😢 🤔 Congratulations 👍👍 great workshop!! Hello from Benedict

Ciao my friend. There are many rules in Europe on what you can and can not do to your Harley-Davidson. A “freer” air cleaner will not eliminate the oil mist. There are companies that sell parts to change where the oil/air goes. If you ride your Harley like a wonderful Ducati with a lot of RPM then the aftermarket breathers that attatch to the oil dip stick can be a good thing. Also lowering the oil level to half to 3/4 instead of full helps a little……Doc
