I have been working on all bikes 2 and 4 stroke since 1979, primarly though 30 years in Harley dealerships, I have some experience working in the chopper and mom and pop shops, don't over look the quality of service techs at either place, I have worked in dealerships with Harley trained techs that are extremely incompetent and vice versa with independent shops bug on the flip side there are brilliant tech in both. The 4 Harley dealerships I have worked at, always want to squeeze every penny out of sales and Labour they can, so out of warranty limitations , high performance and fabricating work is encouraged, that spells lots of issues because due to most dealership shops, are not set up for such work and have limmited experience in that work. I have seen some dealership service managers get in a deep rabbit hole trying to support such work. You need to know what you want and the definition of that work entails, too many customers dream out exotic HP and custom frame work and expect the dealerships to be able to provide any and all of it but in reality very few can!

Great video as always. Doc I need some advice! I just made an appointment at my local NJ HD dealer to have new tires put on my 03 FLHTI. On the phone scheduling the appointment and the service guy says “O man, I have to get you in before the new year” I obviously asked why? “We don’t work on bikes over 20 years old anymore” … I respect this dealership and they’re all good guys but that was shocking to me. I do a lot of long distance rides, if I’m six states away and break down are the dealers going to turn me away? Have you heard of this before? They claim parts supply chain issues are to blame. I would understand if it was a rare bike but the touring platform isn’t too exotic. I do a lot of my own work and really only bring it in for tires but that really shocked me. Does LCHD work on 20+ year old bikes?
@LowCountryHarleyDavidson2 жыл бұрын
Yes we do. But we struggle with customer expectations. Parts are hard to obtain and I’m the only one who remembers how to work on these. Travelers are always helped no matter what year. May take a few days to soarce parts but there is a lot to see in Charleston SC 👍….Doc

I do not understand why many Harley riders think they can put an aftermarket cam, exhaust and tune on a bike and expect Harley to warranty it. You wouldn't expect Ford or Chevy to do that. Dealerships, whether cars or motorcycles have government regulations they have to follow and are limited on what they can do and install. Wish people understood this. I know a Honda dealer in Southern California that got caught turning CRF 450X dirt bikes into street legal dual sports. It was not a cheap fine.

It's a shame Harley dealers have turned out to be car dealers, not the local neighborhood motorcycle shop. They are more into making all the money they can at the customer's expense. They stopped caring about the core bikers. In reality they could make more money if they would still cater to the base customers. Dealers no longer have customer loyalty in mind. That is shown in customers not having brand loyalty anymore.
@LowCountryHarleyDavidson2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. I disagree with Your customer loyalty statement. I have many who will wait for me….Doc
@blackhoggarage2 жыл бұрын
I don't know your dealership; I can only talk about some of the dealers I have visited. Some dealerships still believe in taking care of their customers. Many don't really care if the customers are happy with the treatment, they receive. Those are the dealerships that will lose customer's loyalty.

@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson in 2019 I purchased a new road king, simple stage one no modifications bone stock bike. Before the original warranty was out the engine needed to be rebuilt, I purchased a extended warranty, the transmission needed to be rebuilt, this of course being the short version. But let’s be realistic, Harley Davidson is the only product I have ever owned in my life that I will need to buy an extended warranty on my extended warranty. I have never seen this possible on anything else ever? Not only do I need an extended warranty but I must absolutely purchase an extended warranty when my five year warranty runs out and I am also assured that I can? If I purchased a Honda I wouldn’t bother with a warranty at all? Seriously this has been my experience and I have a very tall pile of paperwork to show for it if you’d like to look up my Vin number that would be great you can see for yourself all the work that’s been done to this motorcycle. I am 61 years old and I ride like my grandfather before me I am non-aggressive I don’t scrape my floorboards they look like new. Hopefully that gives you an idea of what kind of rider I am I also ride two up with my wife most of the time and avoid hog meetings.

Hey Jeffrey. I recognize you sir...you comment often on my channel which I certainly appreciate. I'm sure Doc, as well as I, hate you had your experience. I try to help folks on my channel realize that I work on broke bikes...and what I work on represents a very, very small portion of the total bikes out there. There are millions of trouble free units on the road. Things can happen of course and when they do, that's why Doc and I do what we do. I wish you the very best Jeffrey.

@@KevinBaxter my dream is to one day come to your shop and build that ultimate “dependable” bike that you’ve recently done for another gentleman…. But that’s a dream. Until then, this bike is simply the “sore spot” that I’ll be paying on for the next 5 years or so. Right now the bike is exhibiting problems of a different kind, but it doesn’t show often enough revealing itself to the local dealer here, so I just have to keep riding it till the problem gets bad enough…. My wife and I would love to plan a trip on it, but frankly we just don’t trust it enough to go very far without every possible contingency plan covered. This shouldn’t be, but it is…. So, I blow smoke… and save up for more warranty ☹️🙂
