Is Doc the most amazing trumpet player on the planet? Am I wrong? Thank you to all of the service men in this video for your service.

cruptbside you are not wrong , I am new to the trumpet, I’ve seen most of the big names and they are all fabulous, there is just something about Docs sound that’s different.

He's probably lost some of his range. Guys in their 90s aren't known for popping double Cs. But he hasn't lost his sound.

I think Doc has said before back in his prime (50-60's) he'd hit the gym 3-4 times a week along with a strict diet.

If you didn't know he was a living legend, would you be able to tell from watching this performance, and if so, what does he do that distinguishes him from the other very competent musicians in this ensemble? I don't have the experience to know the difference.
@keatonwalker95388 жыл бұрын
+Mat Broomfield He has a huge sound and was one of the greatest band leaders to date. He did amazing things with the Tonight Show Band. Also keep in mind that he was 84 years old at the time of this performance... That in itself is amazing
@Martial-Mat8 жыл бұрын
+Keaton Walker Thank you Keaton. When you say a "huge sound" do you mean the tone, or the volume at which he plays?
@keatonwalker95388 жыл бұрын
Both. What creates a huge sound on a brass instruments is the activation of overtones. Brass instruments operate on what's called the Harmonic Series. There's an abundance of tutorials and informative videos on this topic on KZbin. When a trumpet player plays a fundamental note they are creating a vibration at a specific frequency. When they play with good technique, they are able to activate overtones which vibrate at 2x,3x,4x, etc. the frequency of the fundamental note. If you were to hold down the sustain on a piano so that the strings could vibrate freely and played a note on a trumpet directly into the chamber of the piano, you would notice that more than one of the piano strings would begin vibrating and resonating. Activating overtones multiplies the resonance of the note you are playing and creates great tone and increases volume.
